There is a reason why port had him as fly in fly out assistant coach for two years. He did have North at the top of the ladder for a couple of years.

Even if not a serious contender for senior he should be loooked at very closely as an assistant .

interesting article about 2007. Lots of noises are similar to now, but with slightly different players.

scraping the bottom of the barrel now....hope thats not what our selection committee bases its selection criteria on....whats left at the bottom.

just give us a coach with a winning record of 55% pref 60% and over 100 games +GF

I don't hate it, but surely there enough better options.

Maybe, but the good thing about this in my eyes is that it shows thoroughness, which is exactly what should be happening.

Pretty uninspiring IMO.

Craig would seem to be a better choice: seems to have the players on board.

Not for me. We need a communicator who can pull the club together. Not Laidley's strength.

Hi Reverend Glad to see you back.

Hard to sell this guy to Members and SponsorsI would have thought.

The upside ( admittedly a small one ) is he would probably be way cheaper than the others!

Good article on afl.com from Bluey Mckenna on selecting assistant coaches

"People often ask how much weight coming from a successful club carries when you're selecting a coaching panel. The short answer is, a small amount. Sometimes blokes have done it tough in clubs where they've struggled for success, but you've actually seen growth. You've got to look at that. Sometimes a coach in a good organisation that is successful can also be lazy because, let's be honest, the players are doing 60 per cent of it and you've just got to turn up and manage the drills."

Contrary to others on here, I prefer Laidley to Craig and Eade. I think he's tactically superior and showed at the Roos he knows how to coach. Would still rather Williams, though. Would be ironic (probably not quite the right word) that if we don't get Roos we might instead get the Roo's coach.

I hate the idea, surely Williams, eade and Craig are better candidates than laidley

Agree with the consensus. Don't mind him, but there are probably better options

I can't see this going anywhere. Laidley is a good match-day coach imo, but he definitely does not have the aura to quickly attract disillusioned members back to the fold, or have potential sponsors knocking at the door of PJ's office. Whilst not at the forefront of selection criteria for our new coach, these would have to be important considerations given the current financial predicament of our club.

So it appears that we don't need a coach that can take the club to the top but a coach who can sell the club to the supporters and sponsers. gee what a great idea, why don't we hire Tim Shaw that should please the masses!!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
