Oliver is no 'stager'!

Media tryhards attempting to paint Clarry as a stager really p!ss me off. He wasn't looking, wasn't expecting it and don't tell me he would have the presence of ind to instantly stage something he didn't see coming. While not a massive hit, it obviously connected with his jaw and surprised him. Suggesting he is overplaying it are a slight on his character and we know that to be very tough and combative. Many questioned the veracity of the punch that knocked out Sonny Liston in the first round of the Ali vs Liston rematch. Liston didn't take a dive! He was wobbling all over the place. I'm not saying that Clarry was badly hurt at all but it obviously caught unaware and to suggest he staged is BS.

It didn't look good and I said it straight away i thought it was the equivalent of a dive. He's a young man and I'm not doubting he was caught of guard and there was contact, but I think he will regret it. I'm not going to say he is a repeat offender but I think he has thrown his head back a few times this season which has been the only part of his game I have disliked.

Why would he even stage anyway? There was no free kick on offer.

The way the footy public wanted to hang him over it was embarrassing, but that's to be expected.  Let's be honest, when something looks dubious, it's fun to assume the worst interpretation when it comes to opposition players and bag them for it a bit.  

But I would have thought most MFC supporters would want to give him the benefit doubt.  I think if you're a Melbourne supporter giving him stick over it, you should be ashamed of yourself.

My first reaction was it was a massive dive. I did notice he had a little blood in his mouth so not doubting there was contact but honestly thought it wasn't much more than a tap. Would like to see other angles though as quite often we've seen instances of contact that look a lot worse from a different angle.

from memory pertracca was asking the umpire for a free kick so that puts a hole in your argument.

What is embarrassing is the media getting all excited and trying to blow it up as a big deal.  They go after a 19yo kid but treat the Rance stage last week with kit gloves.

In the ch7 post game interview by Darcy and Richo they appeared to bait him by asking if the hit connected or if it hurt.  Terrible thing to do to a 19yo on national televison.  They should be ashamed. 

To his credit Clarrie took it on the chin (no pun intended) and stood up for himself really well.

When benefit of the doubt could be applied, then yes, I would like some reasoning/logic to explain why he might have done it.

It doesn't take much of a hit to the chin to get someone off balance. Oliver was clearly stunned, just look at boxers taking a side swipe on the chin, it messes with their inner ear equilibrium.

A lot of people will agree with you and I think if it was another team  perhaps Selwood they would be up in arms.

Absolutely no staging, he went down instantaneously, he was stunned and that hit caught him right on the sweet spot. They should take a look at the hit he took from Rioli, he showed enormous courage and resilience bouncing up from that  

The media will try to turn anything in to a sensation, if they can.

Agree, there is no way anyone can say with confidence that he staged.  Elbows are insidious weapons in fighting.  Anyone who has seen some Muay Thai will know that glancing elbow blows frequently knock very tough fighters out and also leave horrific cuts.  Sure there is a possibility Clarrie embellished it but there is no way it would have been fun being on the receiving end of a glancing elbow to the point of the chin from a 195cm unit.

Elbowing players in the face after the siren is not a great look for the sport. The media and AFL would be better placed focussing on sending this message rather than arguing whether it was a glancing blow or not.

from my perspective, Oliver's reaction clearly demonstrated it hurt.
