  1. Commentary just said May has been released from hospital with a suspected broken rib, 1-2 weeks. Lever got good results on the scan his knee and pending some more follow up could be available to play this week.

  2. Lovely game to watch, if you’re a Dees fan, even team effort, evidence of plan and execution, and a real esprit d’corps across the whole list. My votes were a mess, still don’t feel like i did justice to all the effort. We were two weight classes better than the Hawks, had no problem with Hawks having a go in the 2nd, but there was always a straight right coming that was going to sit them on their [censored]. 1st shout out today is for Viney, while Trac played beast mode, I absolutely loved Vinny’s game at the bottom of so many packs, working hard inside. I was really worried about the absence of Gus this year, he did so many team role jobs so well (and selflessly) I was sure we would miss him more. Viney, who has never been shy about team roles, has however adapted his game and I see him as doing all his usual 1% stuff and fierce tackles that he normally does, but has somehow grown and doing all the tasks that Gus used to do. It also helps that Salem has got through his thyroid issues. Kozzie is going to be better than Cyril, I see the same aggression but a lot less stupidity, well done coaches, and well done club for keeping him in Red and Blue, the SA clubs would kill for him in their line ups. He might be a sneaky for AA squad this year. ANB played a fantastic game at high DE and great decision making, and across 4 quarters, his km would have been huge, today’s game was one of his all time best, would love to know the distance he travelled. I also think it is time for a reset in attitude towards him we can talk pre ‘21 ANB and post 21 ANB, he has been a different player since the GF year but some fans just can’t revisit 1st impressions. He kicked the two best goals last week with high difficulty factor, and his decision about retaining ball or tapping it on has improved out of sight. Marty Hore is playing every game like it is his last, just an amazing story, and between him and Howes look like serious players who I expected little from apart from cameos but were part of a backline that kept the opposition to 38pts. Ben Brown makes me think of a two sword duel in the movies, He’s the long sword, that you have to respect, but in paying attention to Brown and JVR, you find the short swords of Frisch, Chandler, Kossie, Billings etc have poked a dozen holes in you and you’re leaking blood everywhere. I know this tactic is 150 years old, but Brown is playing his role perfectly, and he combines better with JVR than TMac does, I still don’t understand why, he just does, no disrespect to Tmac, but I think it is something the coaches have recognized and it’s not just about Brown getting his knee right. Kudos to Tmac to not sooking about going back. Chandler > Spargo, unfair maybe, but Chandler is the Jack Russell of the footy team, keeps winning battles you don’t expect, and a much better kick from 30m +. Massive win at selection this week, also Goodwin had another great game with evidence of system and innovation. ‘Pacing’ with better choice of options going forward clearly on display. Not feeling the loss of Yze as much as some woe is us types predicted. McVee is a 2nd year player, 28 games, already his output this season is 30% above the 25 other games (except HB), could be driving in the Grand Prix he’s so cool under pressure. This season is feeling very promising, two hard weeks ahead but we are every chance.

  3. There have been a few posters on here who have felt we're showing some signs of the selflessness that many saw in 2021 and felt they didn't see enough of in 2022-23. One effort doesn't define culture or attitude but the Trac defensive goal-line effort yesterday IMO shows more than just Trac's own mindset. They showed the behind the goals footage of it on the afl.com.au The Round So Far last night. Petty, Rivers, Windsor and TMac can all be seen instantly and instinctively raising their hands in celebration of Trac's effort, and we know Gawn gets straight to him as well. That acknowledgement from his team-mates is equally as important as Trac's effort in the first place. It certainly supports the proposition that there's something a bit different about us this year, in a good way.

  5. We sat in the front row behind the goals near the DA. I thought Petty moved ok and certainly took over as the leader in the backline, he was vocal and direct with the rest of the backs in the third quarter. Had a quick browse at game day thread and saw someone had a go at Fritta for not putting any defensive pressure on. Thought that was wrong, he worked his backside off both ways with a couple of good tackles. A lot credit needs to go to our fitness staff. Langdon as expected covered the most KMs for the game, T Mac and Brown were 3rd and 4th respectively for distance covered during the match. I thought it was a real professional performance and at times clinical.

  6. Some MFC supporters started getting frustrated at our kick-mark play in the fourth. I thought it was smart - we were down one on the bench and hadn't been able to give Brown or TMac any rest. Keeping the play a bit slower for a period made sense to me.

  7. Another morning after a good win. How good is this? Yesterday was a game I have waited decades for. Dominated from the first bounce and I never felt like we would lose. Yes it was only Hawthorn but they have belted us for decades. So to give them a 9 goal defeat was a joy. We lost our two mainstays in the backline and had to play the second half without them. I don't care what comes next I am just revelling in a big win for the next few days.

  8. Maybe crowing too early but the last two games have a 21 feel. Not in terms of purely dominant footy more in terms of the team enjoying themselves and playing selfless footy. Defending as a team, extra efforts, looking to give off instead of blazing and celebrating good moments together.

  9. Agreed. Did you hear the line about Kozzie? "He's been good the last 2 weeks after a quiet game against Sydney" He clearly didn't remember Kozzie was suspended for the Sydney clash. The rest of the commentary team fell silent after that line

  11. • Tomlinson. He played well under constant pressure. A few mistakes but could be considered to replace May. • Moniz-Wakefield. I like him. Good at the contest. Tackles like he means it. Hope he debuts this year. • Laurie. Has the skill but seems to be too casual at times. Needs a rocket. Likely end of year delisting. • Fullarton. Perhaps still settling in. He’s an athlete and can be handy. Woewodin. Nice runner but needs better support. One of the better players today. • Adams. Still young and raw. 2nd year. Perhaps ready by 2026 • Jefferson (see Adams) … but as a first rounder, I am getting worried. • Tholstrup. I can see why we jumped up spots and gave away 1st and 2nd round combo to get him. Should debut in 2024. Good competitive attitude. Likely start as a half forward. • Schache . No no no. Has not developed in 7 years. Nice bloke but lacks the competitiveness to be a strong key forward. End of year delisting. • K. Brown. No frills. Socks down footballer. I like his heart and scrap. • Verrall. (See Adams). • Farris-White. A punt. No success here.

  16. Yes, Rod Carter did a fine job on him, Gerard thought. How about Bunghole’s (Dunstall’s) remark after Bayley’s fifth: “I haven’t really noticed Fritsch that much.” And Dwayne whipping himself into a frenzy after the Hawks’ goal early in the last, then checking himself mid sentence: “And that brings the 32-point margin from quarter time back to . . . 30 points.” Volume down next time.

  21. For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw. And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground. It certainly helped that Hawthorn was playing a game style emblematic of ten years ago, as they tried to play possession football by constantly chipping the ball backwards and forwards to one another. Despite the Hawks amassing a whopping 52 uncontested marks in the first quarter, it was all for nothing as the Demons piled on five goals with the Hawks managing only one point. Mitchell’s men were playing more of a soccer match with their game of keepings off. The result demonstrates how statistics are only a measure of what happens in a game, rather than an indicator of the effectiveness of those actions toward producing success. Well, the game was as good as over come that first siren, and having punctured any hope the Hawks had to be competitive, they simply had to stop the bleeding. To that end, they put up to two extra players at the contest which resulted in an AFL version of a rugby match. So the scoreline only advanced by three goals between the two sides in the second stanza. Tragically, for the Demons, Steven May was sent to hospital with an injury to his ribs/lung area and not long after Jake Lever did some sort of damage to his knee. Not many teams would be able to recover from the loss of both key defenders with half a game of football to play, but Melbourne is a different case in point. So the fans had been treated to game of soccer, followed by rugby, but from there on in Melbourne played AFL, and piled on another eight goals in the second half, despite the loss of their full back and centre half back. Fortunately, Marty Hore was substitute and he fitted in to admirably hold his spot in the backline as a replacement. Tom McDonald assumed the full back position, while Christian Salem moved into the backline to assist and Harry Petty swung back to fill the gap left by Lever. The defensive machine never missed a beat and allowed Hawthorn to kick only three goals in the second half. Yet again the Hawks tried to target Clayton Oliver, but once again those tactics from ten years ago failed to cover the rest of the Demons mids. Centre clearances were a phenomenal 14 to 5, as they simply left other Melbourne mids unattended at the bounce. Once again while the stats were heavily in favour of the Dees, it was the ease and damage that those free flowing possessions from the middle that put yet another fork in the Hawks game plan. Up forward, Bayley Fritsch put another fork in the Sicily bubble, who despite 27 touches (of which 22 were uncontested), allowed Fritsch to kick five goals. Again, it is of little value keeping the stats people busy while your opponent is keeping the scorers even busier. The Melbourne coaches played the game style to force the Hawks until they made mistakes. All game long it was just a case of rinse and repeat, as the Hawks simply could not penetrate the Demons all ground defence. And when they made the inevitable error, it was always costly since Melbourne move the ball so quickly and open up the field. The Hawks just kept looking sideways or trying to switch without any success whatsoever. With the Hawks being forked, Melbourne now travels to Adelaide for their next two matches including a short turn around of only five days between Port Adelaide and Adelaide. That certainly won’t help with the injury concerns being experienced in the defence. Having used the forks to damaging effect in this game, the brains trust might have to use the steak knives to carve up the opposition in the coming matches. 24. Goody said they are 'always happy' to let teams switch and hold onto the ball. Has been a hallmark o his coaching. Paraphrasing, its all about stopping them score. And responding to what the oppo dish up tactically. Another hallmark of goody's coaching. I said to mate leaving the ground that once we got a decent lead they were happy for them to play kick to kick 80 metres from their goals. They are not eating into the margin. And we just wash from side to side which in addition to being bruise free, that sort of half pace running, with occasional sprint is way less taxing that running hard up and down the ground. And if it's about percentage, keeping an oppo to under 40 points and winning by 55 is the way to build it.

  27. If Newcombe doesn’t get suspended for that shirtfront on Clarry, after he got rid of the ball, they are pathetic. Clarry’s head jolted back and he hit the ground and it was a very hard bump. The very thing that can lead to concussion. That is a suspension.

  35. So far, there’s not much joy from a short term point of view. The selectors have some headaches coming up this week. Looking further forward, AMW, Koltyn Tholstrup and Kynan Brown look very promising while the taller youngsters are getting an education and need time.

  36. Well, no, they weren't that bad. No coward punches behind play to unsuspecting victims. But there was plenty of deliberate physical targeting which the umpires ignored. The one which annoyed me most was one of the brown and yellows cannoning into Max after he had marked in the last quarter. It was clearly late and the Hawk was clearly in it to hurt. This sort of stuff will continue until the umpires impose a 50 metre penalty. Max clearly expected to be given the 50 which would have put him within scoring distance but the ump was too naive, or stupid, or uncaring to impose it. The same goes with the regular in game targeting of Max. Notably Max was given a 50 metre penalty last week against the Dog which resulted in a goal. Until they umpire smarter this sniping will continue. Meanwhile, beating the Hawks never gets old but I was impressed by how much noise their supporters made considering they were never in it. Welcome back Petty - such a smooth operator both ends - and welcome back Fritters' radar.

  40. joeboy - keep on punchin’ A consistent and fair appraisal overall. Goody in his presser seemed pleased that Sammy Mitchell persisted with his master tagger. Just leaves the hawks one short offensively at the centre bounces and ball ups. The Demon onball collective appeared to enjoy an even team orientated performance. Clayton Oliver contributed manfully with 23 possessions despite quote ‘couldn’t shake opponent’ and being the focus of some extracurricular physical attention. With 14 disposals in the Round 23 clash last season that triplet would fit. Given the coach’s tactical response and the fact that #13 had an over 60% improvement in possessions this time. Oliver - cunning plan gazumped Ed watch 26 disposals at 76.9% DE 4 tackles at 92% ToG%. Langdon - kicks klicks quick Young Caleb’s GPS data must be impressive considering his youth. 47. He has reached a new level A few years back many thought he was fringe. He barely played 2016 and missed a big chunk of 2020 (partly due to being a sacrificial lamb to AFL on sling tackle) and I think was then a year behind Tracc on development into their best Now he's got 150 under the belt he's just continuing to improve, uses his work rate and now his disposal is elite 24 at 75% with 23 PA Loving it ❤️ 💙

  48. Go redlegs. Professional win with some terrific individual efforts and highlights. Goody looks a genius with his selections. Hore replaces may. And Petty goes back to cover Lever. Despite losing our two best key defenders for a half, on a perfect day for footy the oppo can't break 50 points.
