  1. The AFLW season and premiership was the highlight for me in 2022. The way they played and the spirit they played with I found really engaging.

  3. cmon mate, I was trying to send a positive message about how it's healthy and brave to talk and mental health. I obviously was not trying to insult previously generations or war vets us men from previous generations were never encouraged to discuss this stuff and I don't think it's healthy

  6. I see where you're coming from - perhaps a better emphasis would have been that even now it takes a certain type of courage to be able to open up about your vulnerabilities, even to a professional. Like you, I dislike the implication that only talking about it is strength and courage. But damn I'd wish people coming back from war had had the option to talk if they wanted, without all that old noxious pressure to keep their pain to themselves because society craves clean heroes and politicians crave controlled 'memory'. But I'll also never deny the fundamental honour and quiet kindness of not burdening others with a trauma they can't possibly comprehend.

  9. Good ruckman can often studdy and decelop a strategy to take an opponent out of the game, and/or match-up better against some opposition better than others. I agree that having 2 elite rucks would make it so hard for our opposition to take both of them out of the game. One or both are likely to dominate. Similarly, it should give our mids some really good unpredictability in terms of setup for the opersition to counter. Guys like Trac, Clary and Viney don't exactly need much of a head start, so if it gives them additional advantage, we could really tear some teams apart.

  11. Absolutely spot on. To beat Freo and Brisbane away in such comprehensive fashion gives us hope that we can rebound back to our 2021 form in which we were almost unbeatable against the best sides.

  16. Looks like I'll have to do postgrad in the Demonstone School of Hinting!😄 Three mentions of COACH, including in the title, didn't do it for you? They all share surnames with one of the 170-odd people who have coached VFL/AFL teams. Even Norm himself, whose brother and 3 other Smiths coached. Maybe people aren't used to us having our answers so 'close to home' i.e. actually footy related?!🤷‍♂️ Somewhat of a hint was my correction of my misspelling, Don-like (Don-lyke?), of Martin Pike, who, when I realised, I had to drop for not following the team rule! Then there was Ben Brown. You'd think the Browns would match the Smiths but there has been only one - Vic Brown, who coached University (where I had BBB 'straight out of') to a doughnuts season in 1913.

  21. Agree, I think this applies to a lessor part with Jackson as a forward as well. TMac was a big loss for his body work and creation of play for BB and Jako. He does not have this protection at Freeo on any level, except maybe with Fyfe. To maximise his athleticism he needs space.

  24. I feel like this is a key issue, as @Pates also pointed out, having both Max and Brodie in positions able to receive at kick-ins would be a big advantage. I recall a game at the Gabba in 2020 against Brisbane (that we should have won, but didn't), when big Maxy was being repeatedly blatantly and crudely shepherded out of running back to position himself for kick-ins by Charlie Cameron. I'm sure it was a premeditated deliberate coaching tactic by Fagan, well executed by Cameron and it was quite effective at mitigating Max's output at kick-ins in particular and to some extent generally around the ground. Much harder to put work into two genuine marking options like this. I'm also not sure that Jackso was subjected to anything like the same level of oppisition attention, somewhat playing second fiddle to Gawn, who in my view would still have been viewed as the main threat.

  25. Thanks for posting this As Maysie said too many (guys in particular) have traditionally been very reluctant to “show weakness” by opening up about depression in particular. His opening up is actually a sign of strength and all kudos to him for doing this. A sign of a true leader. Regarding the parallel discussion re PTSD particularly in the military I think times have changed dramatically since WW2 and the even Vietnam. So many tried to “be strong” and denied their truly horrific experiences and sadly so many ended with suicide or family destruction. Thankfully although they still suffer terribly the Afghanistan and Iraq veterans now at least are offered far better mental health support than veterans of previous conflicts. Still, their traumas and anguish surely cannot even start to be appreciated by those of us who were spared those traumas. Thanks Steven for having the courage to share your story. ❤️💙❤️💙

  26. Different times different pressures, soldiers are fighting for their lives and the lives of their mates as well as killing those you are fighting against. I have watched numerous interviews with people that fought on the front lines a lot of them ended up in psychiatric wards years after they returned home they didn’t have access to support and thought that they were weak if they asked for it. We now live in a far more enlightened time where help is more readily available and we celebrate successes yet anxiety, depression and the suicide rate remains at an alarming level. Thank goodness that people are building the confidence to speak out and share their personal issues in an effort to help others.!!!

  27. Well spoken Steven. Great for kids (and adults) to see a tough guy like May talk about his feelings. Gone are the days of thinking psychs are for weak people, only the strong and brave have the guts to talk about hard stuff and get better

  37. Firstly it will take Jackson some time to be an effective participant wherever he goes and i'm taking into consideration his shin injury. Secondly he will need to realize his protection around the ground strategy. Third, the first part of the season will have him identified as a prime target of nullification and Max aint there...

  41. Would be great to see Philactides running out of our backline, he'd be a great fit for us. He's a good kick on the left as well. ATM I have two tiers of players I'd be thrilled to see in the red and blue in '24. The top tier are Reid (can't see a pathway to getting him though), Zane Duursma and Ashton Moir. I'd have a few others in this tier of quality, but the positional fit for us isn't obvious. Tier two includes Darcy Wilson and Philactides along with Will Lourenz. I like what I've seen of Malik Gordan and Archie Roberts, who I've just about got in tier 2.

  46. Jacko might have been nuts but he kicked 150 goals over two seasons and helped Gerard Healy kick many goals as well. For 75 goals a year I would happily take the next Jacko.

  47. Those were the days. You could be assured of hearing intelligent, well-informed footy talk from a panel who had a natural rapport and who produced moments of genuine good-natured humour. Contrast that to today's unwatchable Channel 9 Sunday Footy Show numpties with their forced bonhomie, incessant sniggering, smug attitude and obsession with making it all about themselves rather than the actual game itself.
