  2. Theiren lies the cognitive dissonance so apparent from many demonland critics of Goodwin. Pick any point in time in that ridiculous is goody the right coach thread and note who his most vociferous critics are. Many such critics were/are also vociferous critics of our playing list. So, a woeful coach who plays favorites, regularly gets outcoached on game day and has the fatal flaw of being boring (entertain us goody!, his pressers are so uninspiring! No wonder his players aren't inspired!) takes an average list to a flag. You'd think taking an average list to a flag makes him a genius coach. By the by, on teams with generational talent, I agree in oliver, Max and tracc we have three players who could be considered 'generational' talents. I don't mean really good, occasional AA selected A grade players, I mean players up with say the top 50 players in their era/generation. Am i missing any? No? So that's three generational players goody has been fortunate to have in his team thus far. Leaving aside the fact those three players didn't reach their potential until at least 3-4 seasons into goody's tenure, goody has in fact won a flag in his six full seasons as senior coach. How many generational talents has Scott had at the cats? Ablett, Selwood, Danger, Hawkins, Stewart, and perhaps more recently Cameron? So 5 or 6 generational players. And Scott had won just the two flags. And his first was in his first year of coaching when he inherited a premiership list. Flags are hard to win. And goody won one in his 5th season of senior coaching after taking over a team that had been moored in the bottom half of the ladder for more than a decade, and was bereft of talent, other than a handful of future stars. It is mind boggling that some dees fans still refuse to give the credit he is due. It is mind altering that some dees fans actually consider he has under achieved.

  5. I went to see the Casey game live. Was not particularly impressed with harmes' game. His effort was good, but I thought he had very little impact. Dunstan was not only prolific, he was more damaging than harmes. If I was doing the selecting, I would def have selected him ahead harmes.

  6. Sheesh.. Poor Luke Dunstan. Gets 40 plus disposals in the twos and still can't get a gig when a inside mid goes out. Seriously stiff.. might as well pack his bags and go play suburban footy.

  8. We’re getting the job done without Oliver, Fritsch, McDonald and Petty. Pressure for spots all over the ground have appeared due to these guys being injured. I’d love to be top 2 but it ain’t gonna happen. We’ve exposed Rivers and more of Jordon to the midfield. Woey is an instant valuable role player. Melky is a clutch king. Joel Smith can quite frankly play anywhere and impact play. We get back to full strength before finals, I think we feel relatively confident of our capabilities and to handle the pressure of finals footy. So I anticipate another tight game and a couple of goals win.

  10. After training today, Tom experienced some tightness in his calf and pulled up a bit sore," GM of AFL Football Performance Alan Richardson says. "Unfortunately he will miss this week's match. We do, however, expect him to be back and available for selection next week."

  12. Kids who win their own footy and possess a combination of size + explosive athleticism rarely miss at the top end of the draft (barring injury). JT seems to know this and clearly favours players with these characteristics - we only need to look at our attempt to draft Bailey Humprey last year. The prospects who never live up to their high draft position almost never fit this profile. I thought LDU was going to be the exception to the rule given how his career started, but he's now a jet. In addition, Reid has shown he can play forward, midfield and back to a high level, meaning he should be able to contribute right away, even if he isn't a walk up starter in the middle (important given our premiership window is now). If we have the draft capital to move up, and WC have an appetite to trade down, this is an absolute no brainer.

  13. Not only has Goodwin's tenure been awesome, I truly enjoy watching this team play. Goodwin said that as supporters, we need to buy into the contest and defensive work and not just the flashy forward of center things. I love the guts and hardness that this team shows. Whenever i see our boys gut running hard to support a team mate, I love it as much as the flashy quick ball movement.

  14. The team of 1956, which has a fair argument for being the most dominant team in the history of the game, lost matches. In 1963 the premiers, Geelong, lost to Fitzroy and IIRC it was Fitzroy's only win for the season. Good teams do lose matches. To expect us to win every week, even against poorer sides, is unrealistic and doing so in no way damages our premiership credentials. On the other hand, winning against good sides, e g Collingwood on KB, establishes those credentials.

  15. Since Simon Goodwin became coach in 2017, he has only had one season with a win rate less than 50%. 2019 was that season. Yesterday saw him record another "winning" season. That's 6 from 7. One better than the previous best Melbourne Coach in my life time, Swooper Northey, who went 5 from 7. Neale Daniher had 6 from 10, although his last season ended after 13 games. Norm Smith coached for 16 seasons and had three less than 50% (including his last 2). Congratulations Goody. Only one team can win the flag each year but you have coached a team that has been super competitive over a long period of time.

  16. Dunstan was disillusioned and heading out of the AFL system before we came calling apparently so no guarantee he would have ended up at any other club. Disappointed for BB as he's one of my faves. Great human being too. If he's dropped on form rather than injury this late in the season though I fear for his chances of returning. Worried that we're getting a little thin through the middle of the ground now with Spaz out with a sore calf.

A club that has had Shane Tuck and Ben Cousins as players and Danny Frawley as coach has had its share of troubled souls. Well done to whoever thought to add this to their Forum homepage.

  19. At this stage I would rather keep the picks, HOWEVER, many recruiters, who do this for a living, are saying this is the best kid that they have ever seen in the draft. So, if they are saying this kid is better than Tracc, N. Daicos, Ashcroft, Horne- Francis etc, how do you not take him if you have the chance? Interesting times to come after the season ends.

  22. Brown being dropped 5 weeks prior to finals is not a good sign for him. I'm disappointed - I really hoped he could get himself going and be the key forward we really need. Either Petty or Smith gets his spot, presumably Petty. IMO, Petty has to make it as a forward because Tomlinson deserves to hold his spot over Petty in the backline. I'm also disappointed that Dunstan can't get a game over Harmes. I feel like we've seen enough of Harmes in 2023 and we had moved past what he had to offer. I hope he proves me wrong, and I can understand the FD being reluctant to bring in Dunstan who hasn't played all year, but I just feel this isn't the right move.

  23. Righting the wrongs of the post King's Birthday dropping of Tomlinson Still don't mind Brown, but it's clear his body doesn't allow him to play four quarters JVR & Petty is the pair to settle on for this season, no reason it can't work when you have Fritsch (hopefully), Trac, Pickett, Chandler surrounding them

  24. As much as I like Smith, I couldn't have him in ahead of petty - regardless of where petty plays

  25. Petty and JVR are, whether you like it or not, our best tall forwards and I’d expect they’re our September duo.

  26. Tomlinson has continued to deliver. There’s no need to keep pushing him back to the VFL when we have a desperate need for another tall forward and Petty can fill that role. It’s a win win.

  27. I had exactly the same thought. The bloke can't get a game with Oliver and Sparrow injured despite being the best midfielder for a long time at Casey. Harmes has been poor this year, pretty annoyed at the selectors.

  28. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/draft/afl-draft-2023-harley-reid-will-west-coast-eagles-trade-no1-pick-gold-coast-suns-jed-walter-ethan-read-north-melborne-priority-pick-ryley-sanders/news-story/8de2da2c372325224c5f722fecf374b5 North Melbourne, as flagged by interim coach Brett Ratten, is also in the process of applying for a priority draft pick this year, given they’ve won just 11 of their past 78 games. The Roos last year received one future second and one future third-round pick – which they had to trade – as part of an assistance package. Ultimately, they used those picks to acquire Griffin Logue and Darcy Tucker from Fremantle. But the more likely outcome, according to draft sources spoken to by foxfooty.com.au, is the AFL will allow North to pre-list star Tasmanian midfield prospect Rylely Sanders who the Kangaroos are hoping will be added to their Next Generation Academy after he recently received his certificate of Aboriginality. Sanders ranked eighth in foxfooty.com.au’s draft power rankingsreleased earlier this week and is widely considered a prospect worthy of a top-10 selection. I can't see North getting a PP if they can pre-list Sanders (which I think will happen) and given the compromises with the GC NGA prospects, I think the secret herbs and spices compensation pick for losing McKay might be more like end of first round rather than directly after their first pick. I wouldn't be looking to previous AFL decisions as a precedent - AFL HQ have never been consistent in how they decide these things.

  29. The article is indeed confusing dc, but this is how it works. * The ten teams missing the finals have their finishing position established at the end of H & A. * The eight finalists are ranked and their final finishing position is based on their finals performance. * For example, the lowest ranked losing Elimination Finalist is deemed to have finished eighth, even though their pre-finals ladder position may have been sixth or seventh. * The Premier is deemed to have finished first (pick 18) and the runner-up second (pick 17), ignoring any priority picks or other shenanigans. * It is possible, although highly unlikely, for a team to finish H & A in eighth spot, win four finals in a row and end up with the last pick of each round. * Melbourne's ultimate ranking in 2022 was fifth, even though we finished H & A in second spot. This is because we were the highest ranked team to lose in semi-final week (week 2).

  34. Northey, Daniher & Goodwin all excellent coaches A number of variables including the strength of our lists and the strengths of the opposition lists Hard to split them but the premiership might have Goodwin marginally in front The major difference is in the recruitment on an overall basis ... these days we're always looking to improve an already top class list Where as in the Northey & Daniher era's, we seemed to stop short once we got to a B or B+ level The Hawks team during the Northey years were a superstar outfit where as in Daniher's time, the Lions & Bombers were far superior to our outfit One could argue that we really only arrived as a fully fledged contender in 2021 so for that year and the following 2 years, we've been a genuine contender under Goodwin 2 more genuine years of contending (as well as this year) and with it, another premiership, then Goodwin will be well and truly ahead But Northey & Daniher got the maximum out of the teams they coached ... add 4 or 5 top players to those era's and we would have tasted ultimate success in those days, in my view

  38. What I don't get is the talk from the media that MFC will have to pay Grundy's contract if he decides to move. On what planet do these morons live? IF Grundy were to request a trade, it is he who would want to break the contract, giving him no right to demand a contract payout. I do NOT think MFC actually want him off their books. He is a great backup to Gawn and will play games next year and beyond. The nonsense around Grundy is just another example of the media hatred for the MFC. It's all negative press for the Dees, as usual. Get stuffed media!

  42. There are only just over 20 coaches who got stuck on a single premiership in 125 years (and lots who won zilch including Northey and Daniher). That’s no disrespect to them, as premierships are really hard to win. But the great coaches consistently get the best out of their list and therefore the other 80% of premierships are won by multiple premiership coaches. Of the 20 coaches to win a single premiership, some are probably mediocre coaches who were a bit lucky. Worsfold did incredibly well in his first 6 years with a great list (a lot better w-l than Goody). But he could probably be judged as a mediocre coach as when that list went he got really average results for his last 9 years. So it’s over to Goody really. Win another flag and end the debate. If the second youngest premiership team ever never win another flag, then the debate as to whether Goody was a good coach or not will go on forever.

  43. We are definitely building some great depth and flexibility in many ways accellerated by the Petty, Fritsch & Oliver injuries and to a lesser extent the limitations of Brown and McDonald. Melksham's opportunities in Fritsch's role has lead to good outcomes and a definite confidence boost. Viney has had a career best season. We've seen the value of Smith forward and as the sub. JVR has played ~15 games, mostly held his own and will be better placed to make an impact in September than he would be if he'd only played a handful. JJ, Sparrow & Rivers have been exposed to significant midfield minutes they otherwise wouldn't have with Oliver in the team and Tracc not needed forward. Plus we've got Hibberd to come back in, potentially Gus relocating to the half back line (his best position IMV), a top 10 ruckman in the twos & proven capable key position backups in McDonald and Tomlinson. Whilst clearly a plan off the back of last year, the 'squad' based approach was further enforced by injuy, and there is no doubt it has delivered significant benefits.

  47. Draft picks are overrated, but top 5 draft picks are the cream of the crop. If you're drafting the best inside/outside mid in the talent pool, you're getting an elite mid. This isn't Barry Prendergast anymore. JT doesn't miss with mids. If Reid is possible without giving up players that we want to keep, and only costs us draft picks, and JT rates him as highly as I'd suggest he does, just do the deal. Oliver, Petracca, Viney, Reid, Brayshaw, Sparrow, Rivers. Trac and Reid playing forward and then with mid bursts. A huge opportunity to take another step and improve our elite talent.

  48. How much has Goodwin contributed to the strength of the list? Many key members of our side, such as May and Lever, are imports. How many of them would say, if asked, I was convinced after I got Goody’s presentation? I recall May saying something like that. On top of that, in the last few years in particular we’ve hardly lost a player we’d prefer to have kept other than Jackson, and all our best players have signed long term deals. It’s hard to know what’s cause and what’s effect, but the coach surely gets some slice of the credit for the fact that we’ve been able to attract and retain a talented list.

  49. Easily, hands down the most successful coach we’ve had since the golden era of the 60s. One injury decimated year of being non-competitive in 7 is outstanding. I’ve seen posters that still prefer Northey or Daniher and it makes my head spin. It really amazes me how little recognition he gets.
