  2. Nothing ever gets announced at Tennis time... If he has signed on the big announcement will happen when the footy kicks into gear from next week on.

  3. Other than not signing his extension yet there has been zero indications that he won't stay. He was looking quite happy training with the other WA recruits in the off season. His parents are even talking about re-locating here. I think the days of fretting over players re contracting are over for a while

  4. Grand final day should have put an end to this pointless statistic. Trac and Clarry burned them. Winning the ball leads to victories, not purported perfect passes. GO DEES

  6. Waking down the bay the other day and a kid ran past me with a demons hat on, too quick to give him the Go Dees, but he ran past me when he was going back and this time I did and he gave the Go Dees back and had the biggest smile on his face. It was a look of pure joy and I'm so glad that our young supporters are able to smile about their team and not just live in hope like most of us have.

  7. The 2 top placings for Most Clangers ever in a Season. 1. Most ever Clayton Oliver 129 clangers , 2021 2. Christian Petracca 125 clangers, 2021 Make of that what you will. Stats lie I suppose. Even the kick in from a point is a registered kick. I hope they win the clanger count again this year. Two. of the best 5 players in last 57 years. Legends both of them.

  8. Is this the greatest play off weekend ever?

  9. I wish Mick Stinear would teach the girls to kick the ball off the ground, rather than trying to pick it up and guarantee being tackled. ...except for Goldrick and Paxman who know when to do it and execute perfectly.

  10. Hopefully Viney can join them next year.

  11. If one gets a hell of a lot of ball in very close far more room for error. Clangers as a percentage of total disposals could be a slightly better, though still very imperfect, reflection of a player’s worth and contribution.

  12. And agree with everyone here, quite possibly the most exciting weekend of playoffs ever! KC ended up with the biggest winning margin of the weekend, but had to come from behind twice in the last minute to do so.

  13. Absolutely incredible game that one between KC and Bills, I only managed to watch the last quarter live, but what a quarter! Simply one of the most amazing finishes to a game ever, had to feel for Josh Allen, threw what looked to be about 3 game winning TDs, and agree with you titan_uranus, and watching some of the post match reaction on youtube, the experts are calling for a College Style extra time system whereby both teams get a chance with the ball. Some of the best quarterbacks in the league, on both winning and losing teams this weekend, flinging some beautiful passes in between the wide receivers numbers (a teardrop pass from Brady to Fournette in Q2, Stafford's darts to Kupp in that final drive, Allen and Mahones both in Q4), I love to see it.

  14. As you point out above, it's not just about how a clanger is defined, it's about the situation and where on the ground the clanger occurs. Clarry and Trac probably have mostly forward half clangers, as opposed to back half clangers leading to turnovers that open you up and get you scored against. In that sense, our excellent team defence this season pretty much gave Oliver and Trac a licence to be attacking and turn it over more often in our forward half, without it really hurting us, because we were already so well setup down the line defensively that we'd more often than not win it back. Must also build pressure on the opposition when Trac and Clarry can be so attacking without suffering substantial consequences for turning it over. Eventually the dam wall breaks and you get the BANG, BANG, BANG!!

  15. The top 11 (inc Wines) are a who's who of the best players in the comp. Any player would be proud to be included in this list. And note the small difference in numbers - excluding outlier Adams there is less than 0.50 average between 2 and 11. Stats like these stink.

  16. If there are no trackwatchers can we be sure that training happened? Can't be too sure in the era of deep fakes, 5G and something to do with Bill Gates.

  17. And at the other end of the scale we don't have a (visible) stat on what I like to call dynamic possessions An example of that is Salem ... his kicking to position sets up a lot more forward forays as compared to his kicking to position in previous years (not taking as many safer options) ... no risk, no reward Oliver, Petracca, May & Bowey are others that stand out in the dynamic possession area. Harmes when at his best is handy too. Others such as Viney, Langdon & Brayshaw can be quite creative with their disposals Oliver stands out as the best in that area ... he has incredible vision (Petracca is catching him though!)

  18. Leppitsch made the point in the Brisbane final that our game was based on pressure, moving the ball forward as quickly as possible and embracing full field pressure to lock it in or move it further forward. Clangers were a byproduct as a result and the Dees would reset quickly rather than dwell on them.

  19. One of the greatest games of all time to end what surely is the greatest weekend of NFL games, ever? There's no doubt the main reason the Bills lost is giving up a FG in 13 seconds. But... This might be the straw that breaks the camel's back in terms of the current OT rules. For Allen not to get to touch the ball after the game he had is just not how that game should have ended. Both defences were stuffed which meant too much rested on who won the coin toss. It shouldn't be that way.

  20. Irrelevant for Trac and Clayton. Their possies are under tremendous pressure. Clangers in the back line are the worst kind of problem. Think Frost....

  26. To an extent yes, but I still see the same occasional boneheaded Kyle come out to play. Even yesterday some of his calls for horrendous. Throwing on 1st down multiple times when we weren't getting diddly squat in the air. st was to persist with the running game, even if it was just 3 rards and a cloud of dust type stuff. No-one is scared of Jimmy throwing the football at the moment and it seems the only throws he's capable of are over the middle to Kittle or Samuel running slants or post routes. Then there's the genius of decidng to have our left tackle run motion on a 4th and 1 because, you know, it worked so well against the Cowboiys last week. The Packers D did a really good job of stopping that but we really telegraphed it. Have a lot of respect for Kyle Shanahan and he's a great mind. He's gotta be right up there when it comes to drawing up all sorts of running plays but to be honest it's because of that ability that I kind of expect a certain level of success in the running game. Sometimes it feels like he's either holding back or doing god knows what.

  27. These guys make a lot of clangers because they are contested beasts who get the hard ball in high pressure situations more than anybody else. Clary also accumulated over 80 more contested possessions than his nearest rival this season. Law of averages and degree of difficulty dictates they are going make more than most.

  28. As someone else here said, what constitutes a clanger and who does the judging? e g If a midfielder has no other choice but to kick to a contest where his own player plays from behind which allows his opponent to win the ball, does that midfielder record a clanger against his name? If so, it's a farce. And what if the kick forward is primarily to gain ground for his team (under coaching instruction) We've seen teams deliberately kick the footy deep into the pockets to create a stoppage. Is that a clanger? Giving away a deliberate free kick in the back pocket can also be a tactic ... a long kick that sails out on the full then puts pressure on the opposition to manoeuvre the ball out of danger (this tactic is often used in soccer ... allow the opposition to have the ball and then pressure them to turn it over and then counterattack) A midfielder can't always see a free target but because of pressure from the opposition, he often must dispose of the ball in a risky way And apart from 2021 & 2018 our forwards would often play from behind ... a cardinal sin even in modern football I'd award clangers to forwards who play from behind. And then it's mugs to the backline time if they continue to transgress

  30. There's an old saying that still rings true ... A Champion Team will beat a Team of Champions We see the Patriots as a champion team but the Packers? No way And the Packers aren't a Team of Champions either ... more so a team with a too-heavy reliance on one player (Rodgers) with a few other 'bit' players I don't know why that sort of analysis isn't widespread to all and sundry ... to me, the issues with Green Bay are quite obvious But such is the nature of competitiveness between supporter groups, jibes like chokers (and suchlike) are freely thrown about ... and others talk through their hip pocket It's lazy analysis and dumb analysis Without Rodgers, Green Bay would be lucky to win 4 or 5 games. And you take Brady out of the Patriots and the Pats break even straight after and then make the playoffs the year after

  32. Friends, one thing I have noticed since that immortal night of 25th of September is how much more magnanimous i am towards other clubs and their triumphs. There was once a time when I could not watch Collingwood in the 90GF, or the Handbaggers in 2007 or the Western Bulldogs in 2016 - I was so envious and jealous. Now, I can settle down with You Tube and appreciate their victories for what they are worth - something, yes, something in the scheme of things -, even if none of them approach our canonical 38 seconds or whatever it is.

  33. tennis australia must live in another world all player covid testing is voluntary. No oversight, mandating or supervision players are handed a pile of rats and recommended to test daily and if +ve to report to ta some players have already admitted they only test once a week or if they have symptoms. most are not saying. there is really big money involved here once you get to the quarter finals. can you imagine a player self testing +ve who is symptom free (but infectious) dobbing himself in and losing the chance for a $250,000 or more payday? we will never know thanks to such a badly thought out, irresponsible policy

  35. I bumped into Daniel Turner at our local gym during the off season and had a good chat to him about his stint so far in the AFL system and the September experience. I was also blown away by how incredibly fit he was. He'd already lost all his puppy fat and looked as lean as I had seen. He said he got a reality check with just how professional you have to be off field including your diet. Stark different compared to his 'tradie diet' as an apprentice plumber prior to being drafted. He was doing his running program up here with Charlie Spargo who is an absolute pro when it comes to off field training standards. His older brother has recently signed at our footy club. Looking forward to getting some good updates off him. I hope he gets a game next year.

  41. Dee 56 I have followed the Dees since 1958 and have no real disagreement that Gary Hardemann was a very good CHB but to say he was our best ever Backman ( despite the Team of the Century) is what I don't endorse. For the following two reasons : 1. Gary was undersized as a KPD and could be out marked by taller opponents 2. tended to make the ball his object ( what footy is about and he was bloody good at obtaining it I admit) but he did give his opponent a chance (or a sniff ) to cause damage as they say. He did also provide great drive for us and was a very good CHF later in his career. A back man is there to mind his man so Gary might be the best footballer perhaps to play in defence in the last 50 years BUT David Neitz would be my best CHB ( probably our best KP player ever or since 1972, although he only played about 1/3 or 1/2 of his 300 plus games in defence before he excelled on the forward line for about 6/7 years. While we are on the topic David Schwartz would no doubt in my mind be the best KP player and forward and be in our top 3 players of all time but for his heartbreaking injury run that I also believe probably cost us a premiership in say 1998 as he was never the same. Also if we had Both Schwarta and Neiter today both fit as in 1994 I have no doubt that Neiter would be a KPD and Schwartz a KPF who with Gazza Jacko and Pike plus whiz and Charles might have got us over the line. Our defence has been always our bugbear either not big/good enough or tough enough and physically strong as well. Look at our Glory days teams defence and also our 2021 model and we are as tough as any Melb team that has triumphed since WW11. It has helped of course by our midfielders and wingers and forwards being as hard as nails in any contest. So are our smalls and in the 50/60's 95% ( maybe except for Jeff Tunbridge ) we were the toughest going around. ( Hawks and Lions also had this trait) and Cats and Tigers were hardly soft either. I also think that Doc Roet was a great CHB who only played about 70 games in the 60's but stood up in those games as a class and close defender of size and agility but was not around in 1972 of course. Tassie (Bob) could still be our best FB but is too early for the Top 100 since 1972. It's always hard judging players in different eras but champions are still champions even if they have not got that or those premiership medal/s. We are blessed know with possibly this new generation that in 5 years time many will no doubt be elevated from our Top 20 to our Top 10 from 1972. It's a hard job then comparing we hope this group if we become a dynasty to our immortal glory days heroes that very few of us were lucky enough to see only the last years or very small numbers of games excel in the Red and Blue.

  42. And after the Dees, Alves played a blinder in the 77 GF for the Roos , with a huge star jump off the stage after he received his medal. Took Wayne Gordon to the cleaners that day. Top 10 for mine.

  46. Why would you move when you have the realistic mouthwatering prospect of more flags ? With JT and his teams’ brilliant recruiting, and our talented next gen players waiting in the wings for their chance, I believe our club has been set up for sustained success over many years a la Geelong. In my long lifetime of supporting my beloved Dees I have never seen our list bat as deep as they do right now. We are a strong club and will only get stronger. 65000+ members for 2022 is very achieveable.
