  1. Why are so many expecting North Melbourne to make the 8? Am I missing something?

  2. A great spot for him. Good in the air so can impact aerial contests. Prepared to play roles assigned to him. His best footy has been as a shut down tagger so defensively minded and can be sit on a dangerous medium forward if required. Excellent tackle and a generally accurate long kick. Good move.

  4. Good. It is up to the entire MFC to prove these articles wrong Nobody outside the MFC (apart from Cam Mooney) rates or trusts us after last years shambles, i wouldn’t So it is entirely up to us

  5. This to me is just to address the oversupply in the guts, and Harmes is just the logical choice to move out of there as he’s more versatile. It was never going to be Viney or Brayshaw and Petracca already has a secondary role at HF. Harmes’ ability to defend first then balance it out with damaging offence is what made him a good midfielder. It should suit him well in defence also. I don’t particularly love the idea as I really enjoyed the player Harmes had become in the middle, so there’s an element of risk of ruining something that was working. But I can also see how it might benefit the team, so will watch with an open mind.

  6. Geez, the Harley bit got me again! Bleary eyed right now! A 70+ year supporter, and I've never loved this Club more. I'm sure the red wine is contributing, but I'm so excited for this season. Go Dees

  9. I prefer an underdog status for our 2020 campaign. We alway come to grief when the media jumps on our bandwagon.

  10. I don’t think anyone on here was expecting him till mid season. To me it is almost good news, just confirms what we already knew. Harley can build form from the back end of the season and be cherry ripe for finals. Yay!

  11. I particularly liked when Steven May said “I’d rather be out there losing with the boys than sitting in the stands”. That way when he’s finally out there, we can all lose together.

  12. some of the opinions about Hunt have me in the confusion room- again. can we get some facts involved- i know it takes a bit of work- but it lifts the stadard of the discusison. Fact 1- Hunt was second in the goal scoring behind Trac last year Fact 2 - Hunt came 10th in teh B and F, so the club thinks he played better, during the year than 30+ other players Fact 3 - his 24 so has plenty of time to get better, he is just entering the period when AFL players mature and stop doing some of the silly mistakes - yet a lot of people on this post seem to be prepared to write of his whole carreer Fact 4 - "the need for speed" is now treated as a premium - Hunt is fast- his skills can get better - slow players tend not to get fast i for one think he has a bright future at MFC - and that Torpedo is still a highlight for me

  14. We could have had Pickett with our first pick but we traded it to Melbourne. Bottom 4 looks like a possibility. Can we get our pick back from melbourne I was surprised we didn't pick Spargo with our 2nd pick of his draft year. JMac picks up the ball, runs into 3 Demons players to get group tackled. Melbourne's pressure around the ball has been very good. Dom Tyson holds up the play before bombing it into the 50. That makes perfect sense when you have Wayne Carey and Corey McKernan down there. Tyson is fine. He's just not elite at anything I still have absolutely no idea why we got Tyson. Was literally the last type of player we needed as part of the trade. Melbourne just ran a training drill for Bedford's goal. I thought Tom McDonald was good in special comments, insightful. Reactive, flat-footed, poorly skilled, undisciplined and poorly structured. Thats 2 weeks in a row, today against a side that was 30% VFL players. Got taken to the cleaners by Melbourne's zippier players. Was bloody excited going into this season. Yeah, I'm not quite as excited anymore. It was very weak. Brayshaw was the only gun in there, supported by guys like Tom Sparrow, James Jordon and Spargo. On the plus side Bailey Fritzl played his annual Gary Ablett Sr game against us. BUT before I microwave the ol' membership I'm assuming the following didn't play?..Higgins, Goldy Cunners, Taz, JZ, BBB, Larkey, Jy, TT, Polecat? For comparison Melbourne was missing Gawn, Oliver, Jones, May, Salem, Petracca, Viney, Lever, Hibberd, McDonald and Jetta.

  16. Yep, we sure did look better. The flow on effect of having L.Pearce was crucial, freeing up Zanker, Scott and Cordner to play more of their natural roles and in turn taking pressure off each line. Agree with others that, while they didn't exactly set the world on fire, Cunningham and Newman were improved. Seven individual goalkickers reflected a team effort - especially that chain of handballs to set up Scott, started by Newman on the boundary. We had the 2nd highest number of marks i50 and 2nd best disposal efficiency for Round 4. Was great to see Parry do so well on debut, joining the "goal with first kick" club. Time will tell if her massive goalkicking numbers in the Canberra league will translate at the top level. Clearly recruited to help our goalkicking, wish she could've been out there sooner. This was the 25th game for both Paxman and O'Dea, meaning they've played every possible game for us so far. No mean feat across 4 seasons. Scott will likely notch up her 25th in R5. For reference, the players with the most games in the league are 2 Adelaide players with 28. Some stats for the mid-way point of the season: league-wide Paxman is 7th for disposals (avg. 20.3 at 70% eff.), 7th for metres gained, 10th for contested possessions and eq. 5th in i50s. Daisy is averaging 14 at 71% and is eq. 5th in intercept possessions (Birch is eq. 6th). Scott is equal 4th in score involvements, Hore is eq. 6th, Zanker is eq. 12th. Hanks is 8th in tackles. Looking ahead to next week, we might actually face some selection dilemmas! Mithen is apparently ready to go. The obvious switch would have been Heath, but she already went out last week. With appendicitis because, of course. Our injury stress lessens slightly, with now 3 fit players outside the 21, although we're clearly not going to be as fresh as other teams. Every game's a danger game from here on out! We have two games left at Casey, so get along if you can.

  17. Im definitely in the "No Injuries to top 12 players" camp. (is there one?) This survey by professional writes/tipsters is very sobering compared to our discussions on DL. If we get our best new players playing to their potential, they will probably surprise a few journos as they havent as yet really associated them with Melbourne. Langdon, May, Tomlinson, Bennell, Lever. Then if TMac Gus AVB and Viney are back to their best form, Im tipping them even in round one. All that being so we would have to crack the top 4 at least. Unfortunately you can make a case that if many other sides are injury free as well it makes it very difficult. We bat deep but at least 5 others do as well. As opposed to say North and Carlton who rely solely on their 5/6 best players. Bulldogs is a potential big thing IMV.

  19. Harmsey will perform well whatever roll he is given. Has tagged the best players when needed and has outpointed them many times. He has become a well round footballer who reads the play well. Off halfback he will run and carry and set us up, He can run hard tackle as he did in the finals with 20 of the best he is solid as and most of all he has time on his side. He learns quick. Another string to his bow.

  20. Just because he plays off HB doesn’t mean he also doesn’t rotate through the middle. The way they push the defence so high means he will also find himself on the ball many times. His ability to hit a contest and deliver well to a team mate is exactly what we need and spreads our midfield wider and deeper. I like Lockhart back there, too. Our back six will be a formidable unit: Jetta, May, Lockhart, Lever, Harmes, Oscar (or other, don’t hate me ). Hibberd has some work to do, but at his best also makes this a better group. Having Harmes own a resting midfielder from the opposition (ie Dusty) is a good move.

  22. Is this Goodwin's "Try Bayley Fritsch in a position he is not best suited for" move for 2020?

  23. Looking at his stats, he consistently played 17-19 games a season, so to me that supports his general robustness. Also need to consider that a few of the missed games were probably through suspension.

  24. Last year the difference between 7th and 14th was 3 wins (12 v 9). 2018 there was 1 win between 7th and 12th (13 v12). 2017 the gap from 7th to 12th was 2 wins (12 v 10). Positions are more than likely going to be very close in that middle range of the ladder, possibly all the way from 4th to about 14th. Keep that in mind if you get too caught up in predictions. Or do you own and try to work out where to put teams like Hawthorn, Essendon, Port Adelaide, North Melbourne and Fremantle.

  28. Im pretty sure he would have thought it through. Fact of the matter is, we have depth in the midfield, and Brayshaw in particular needs to be at the coalface, he is no good on a wing or a HBF, Viney will get more time, Sparrow is coming through, Add Petracca to the mix, even Jackson in there at times. Harmes reads it well, is good over head, uses the ball nice, can run, is tough and has a defensive mindset. Its a good move.

  33. The Boys are very close knit and that is something. Goody announcing that Harley Bennell has been offered a contract and the boys getting around him brings a tear in my eye. I know we are on the right track we just need that little bit of luck to go right for us. Can't help it I just love my club.

  44. Jeez, this thread is like a bloody ghost town. I would’ve thought more D’Landers would be up and about after our girls posted such a massive, 8 point win over the old arch rival, The Filth, under lights and roof at Docklands on a Friday night, as a curtain raiser to a 50,000 spectator State of Origin game. What an awesome victory! If Adelaide can beat the Bloos, and Saints somehow beat Freo tomorrow, our finals chances increase dramatically. If we were to make finals, we could, you know, be a real chance to WIN A FLAG, like it says on that little plan Perty and the board put out the other week! C’mon people, get around OUR team, the bloody MFC for chissakes! RED AND BLUE! Or are they just chicks pretending to play footy?! Sheesh

  45. The slowest U-turn in the history of the game. Imaging the ball falling to ground with Tex and Jordan Lewis crumbing? Wouldn't have surprised me one bit, if the club was for it.

  46. I seem to recall this being in the media at the time Bernie came to us. The drift I got was that it was all a bit of a tongue in cheek comment from Bernie in him wanting his mate to come across with him. Not really anything serious in it...
