  1. The AFL's entire approach to umpiring & adjudication is bizarre. I had a look at the rules about that. There are no rules about that. Rant on: The latest published rules that I have found are from 2017. And those you can't even get from the AFL web site. You have to get them from a thing called the "AFL community" web site. The AFL site is so light on in terms of rules & umpiring it is worse than bizarre, it is a disgrace. There are parts of their web site that can't even be accessed unless it is with a search. Such as, the "interpretations" section. (The fact that "interpretations" even exist is another example of the AFL's sloppy approach to adjudication.) And those interpretations are for the 2017 season. The AFL obviously don't actually care about this. Example: 6/6/6 is a rule which if breached results in a free. But it's not in the official published rules. Pathetic. Rant off. The 2017 rules do not mention this particular ruck situation. If you "unduly" push him off the ball, it's a free. Otherwise, play on. Nothing about "going back for the ball". (And incidentally, the word "unduly" appears twice in the rules but nowhere is it defined. Useless.) This appears to be one of the worst examples of "interpretations" in that it's not even documented. We're back to the bad old days of rules that exist only in someone's head. This year looks like the worst year for umpiring in quite a while. Watching our games, I thought it might just be me overreacting based on our lousy start to the season. When you're desperate for a win, every contest looks like a free to MFC. But watching other games ... throwing rampant, "protected zone" no longer exists, short kicks ... a lot of grappling off the ball (Nev could be umpired out of the game but he's far from the only one doing it). The AwFuL have shown their priorities. Cartoon movies and toys aimed at 15 year olds now take clear priority over a fairly and well adjudicated competition. They might as well get it over with and bin the umps and have Marvel®©™ characters running around giving out frees randomly. It wouldn't make much difference.

  3. Why do we need more scoring? Compared to most games, AFL is a goal-fest already. 666 just means more rules and delays. Congestion is not much changed but interesting tactics are probably more constrained. The congestion that occurs nowadays is largely because of the the fitness of players and the big bench. That's where the solution is. Here's a basket ball analogy where there is absolutely too much scoring IMO. Players have gotten taller so it's easier to score. So you raise the hoops if you want to keep the game the same. You don't introduce netball rules about who can stand where.

  4. We didn't need 666, so I have no idea why we need to take it any further. Just leave the game alone. It's fine.

  7. The level of intensity and application Essendon showed against us was at least double what they showed against St Kilda. That was little to do with St Kilda being better than us (which was also true), it was more about how Essendon attacked the contest or generally cared about the game. In the first half of their game, Essendon was non-existent. St Kilda were playing a below-VFL level side. They've beaten a developing young side in GC by 1 point, an Essendon side which played the worst half of footy anyone will play this year whilst struggling to hold them off, and they beat Hawthorn by a kick despite the Hawks having at least 6 injuries and only 2 on the bench for a half. If we're talking their 3-1 record alone, I'm not worried in the slightest. It's not their W-L record which is the thing we should be worried about. St Kilda play a style of game which, when they're on, is our achilles heel. They'll use the space on the G, they'll bring pace, and if we leave too much space behind our press then they'll find it easier to score than they have in the opening four rounds. This is not going to be easy for us, but St Kilda is not a good side.

  8. Hard to judge St Kilda on that Hawthorn went in without a single contested ball midfielder and lost both their key defenders during the match.

  9. 666 was intended to create space, increase goal scoring and therefore have more ads to make money from. Instead it has brought scoring down, with Round 1 being the lowest score round of football in nearly 40 years. 666 is a blight on the game. This year has produced the worst quality football in my lifetime, with not a single memorable or high quality game so far. Expanding 666 would essentially turn the game into soccer. They need to undo all the new rules they implemented this year. They [censored] up and it’s lead to [censored] football. Pathetic foresight by the AFL.

  10. I have followed his progress and marking and intercepting are very strong points if not the best of his game. Last year was a disastrous decision for both us and Harrison as his nerves and again our defensive plan was exposed by over the back goals especially. I believe with some extra kilos and development he is getting near the opportunity especially before May and Lever return. This year I would have to accept advice from Casey watchers but I thought he was quite handy and composed vs Tigers at Shepparton. I do however believe Harrison will become our first choice third tall in defence by later in the season.Only exception might be Frosty on Buddy or some other match up for the horses for courses opponent. I wonder if Oscar is worrying too much about his long term position and also not as fit as he should be from his shoulder op pre season.? Unfirtunately he has gone backwards lost all confidence and judgement and doesn't even go for marks any more or if he does he doesn't touch the opposition viz Heeney outmarking two backs at the SCG. Oscar was just a very close spectator confided and bewildered. We can't afford that defense now with the cream out injured and never really if we wish to beat WC and Woods and Tigers or GWS. It will happen Petty will get the nod but I have a feeling it won't happen overnight. Until Jake and Stephan are back and adjusted and the unit is playing strong brand of footy might be the opportunity best utilised as we hopefully build towards a meaningful September campaign again.

  11. Saints have pace and Billy needs to stay in. No good dropping him after one game every time, it is destroying any confidence he needs. I would give him 2-3 games at least and give him the opportunity.

  12. RELENTLESS by KC from Casey The Casey Demons returned to the winning list with an emphatic 54 point victory over a limp North Melbourne VFL combination at Casey Fields on Saturday. Smarting from last week’s thrashing at Box Hill, the Demons came out of the blocks intent on redeeming themselves for their embarrassing start to the 2019 campaign. After a brief early bout of inaccuracy, the goals flowed as a result of relentless pressure applied to the visitors who were constantly forced into error. The pleasing thing from Casey’s viewpoint was that the team had multiple avenues to goal with six different goalkickers hitting the scoreboard in the opening term tally of 6.7.43 to 0.0.0. The inspiration came from Jeff Garlett who shook off a lengthy period of injuries and indifferent performances to return to his sparkling best. Garlett tackled and harassed the opposition, brought others into the game, maintained that effort throughout and booted three goals to give himself every chance of returning to the Melbourne line up in the near future. Casey continued to dominate proceedings into the second term and pushed its lead out to 49 points at the 14 minute mark before the hapless Kangaroos scored their first ever goal against the club after 5½ quarters (they were held goalless in their only previous meeting last year). The Demon domination continued to half time when they led by 54 points and then through to the last break and into the final term when they led by as much as 84 points, 14 minutes into the quarter when skipper Mitch White booted his third. At that point, the home side appeared to relax and coach Jade Rawlings would not have been impressed as North went on a five goal spree to double its goal tally in the last fifteen minutes of the game. The coach would however, have been happy with his team’s all round effort and the much improved input of his Casey-listed players. Seasoned performers from the skipper to Mitch Gent and Jimmy Munro were in the fray early, as were debutant, Tim McCaffrey from Wangaratta Rovers and Jaxon Briggs who played his best game yet and booted three goals. Although recruit Liam Wale-Buxton was eventually well beaten in the hit outs by seasoned big man Tom Campbell, he contested strongly and tackled well. Speaking of tackling, Alex Neal-Bullen was a tackling machine throughout the game while the in-and-under midfield work of Corey Maynard was outstanding. Tom Sparrow was given a run with role on Dom Tyson and did very well in curbing the dangerous on baller for most of the game in what will prove an excellent learning experience for the youngster. Harry Petty and Declan Keilty both bounced back after subdued performances last week with the former outstanding in defence with his marking and rebounding work. Keilty looked good in his various roles, especially around the ground when called on to do the relief ruck work and also kicked a strong goal in the third term when up forward. Both will be in contention for promotion this week with injury doubts over Oscar McDonald and Braydon Preuss. The Demons have a bye next weekend before returning to Casey Fields to take on Richmond in a fortnight. 2019 Hard Yakka / Totally Workwear VFL Casey Demons 6.7.43 10.9.69 17.10.112 18.11.119 North Melbourne VFL 0.0.0 2.3.15 4.6.30 10.5.65 Goals Casey Demons Briggs Garlett White 3 Baker Garlett McCaffrey Smith 2 Keilty Gent Quigley North Melbourne VFL Larkey 3 Campbell 2 Hodges Hrovat Rippon Robinson Wilkinson Best Casey Demons Petty Garlett Gent White Keilty Sparrow North Melbourne VFL Campbell Hayden Rippon Robinson Larkey Hrovat Statistics Oskar Baker 2 goals 7 kicks 8 handballs 15 disposals 4 marks 5 tackles 78 dream team points Toby Bedford 2 kicks 5 handballs 7 disposals 2 marks 2 tackles 30 dream team points Jaxon Briggs 3 goals kicks handballs disposals marks tackles dream team points Kade Chandler 1 behind 6 kicks 3 handballs 9 disposals 2 marks 6 tackles 56 dream team points Jake Di Pasquale 9 kicks 7 handballs 16 disposals 3 marks 3 tackles 64 dream team points Tom Freeman 6 kicks 5 handballs 11 disposals 4 marks 4 tackles 56 dream team points Jeffrey Garlett 3 goals 1 behind 9 kicks 9 handballs 18 disposals 3 marks 5 tackles 88 dream team points Mitch Gent 1 goal 1 behind 15 kicks 7 handballs 22 disposals 8 marks 2 tackles 99 dream team points Jack Hutchins 5 kicks 6 handballs 11 disposals 3 marks 1 tackles 34 dream team points James Jordon 11 kicks 3 handballs 14 disposals 3 marks 2 tackles 57 dream team points Declan Keilty 1 goal 1 behind 9 kicks 5 handballs 14 disposals 7 marks 7 tackles 7 hit outs 92 dream team points Mitchell Lewis 5 kicks 6 handballs 11 disposals 1 marks 4 tackles 43 dream team points Tom McCaffrey 2 goals 11 kicks 5 handballs 16 disposals 7 marks 2 tackles 81 dream team points Corey Maynard 1 behind 6 kicks 17 handballs 23 disposals 2 marks 3 tackles 68 dream team points James Munro 10 kicks 10 handballs 20 disposals 4 marks 7 tackles 84 dream team points Alex Neal-Bullen 11 kicks 3 handballs 14 disposals 13 tackles 87 dream team points Harrison Petty 15 kicks 2 handballs 17 disposals 9 marks 3 tackles 90 dream team points Aidan Quigley 1 goal 1 behind 8 kicks 11 handballs 19 disposals 1 marks 4 tackles 72 dream team points Tim Smith 2 goals 1 behinds 7 kicks 10 handballs 17 disposals 3 marks 7 tackles 2 hit outs 94 dream team points Tom Sparrow 9 kicks 10 handballs 19 disposals 3 marks 7 tackles 79 dream team points Luke Tynan 6 kicks 10 handballs 16 disposals 3 marks 48 dream team points Liam Wale-Buxton 1 behind 5 kicks 5 handballs 10 disposals 3 marks 9 tackles 23 hit outs 89 dream team points Mitchell White 3 goals 13 kicks 3 handballs 16 disposals 7 marks 3 tackles 4 hit outs 100 dream team points

  13. I didn't say he played well. I said: 'Omac has not had a great start to the season but was ok on Friday. Not great, ok. His opponent for much of the game had one mark inside 50 for the game and a solitary point. And had the equal high number of one per-centers with Hore (who played one more quarter than Omac). He did his job'. As for one per centers i would respectfully suggest that given your 'token one per-centres' (sic) comment that perhaps you are unaware what they actually measure. As per Champion data they measure tackles, spoils and shepherds. All fundamental defensive skills - in particular spoils . And the best defenders score high in one per centers - Rance being the king. And Omac is by far and away our highest one percenter scorer. So again with all due respect i think you don't really get why a coach (that most on this site seem to respect) picks him week in and week out - and in that you are well and truly not alone on this site. The reason Goody picks him is he does his job. Simple. Take Thursday night - Reid was his opponent for much of the time and he was ineffectual. As for being more courageous in the air again you are not alone in your seeming blind spot to his courage. Omac cannot be questioned for his courage. Exhibit A is how is how he he ended up getting concussed in the Swans game. Go to the replay and watch the contest at the end if the third quarter (4.36 to go). And then tell me he isn't 'courageous in the air' or doesn't 'throw himself at some contests'. Omac is pretty slow. He also sometimes gets out bodied (but given he is only 23 that is no shock). But the fact is that Goodwin, a coach most on this site seem to rate and one the club has seen fit to extend his contract - picks Omac each and every week. For two full seasons. And continues to do so in his third season as coach. Leaving aside the frankly asinine suggestion that a professional AFL coach has favorites and would risk success for some weird reason such as stubbornness what does that tell you? I'm not sure about you but it tells me that Omac is doing the job the coach is asking him to do. So he continues to select him. Which is way good enough for me. You are right - Omac isn't looking particularly confident at the moment. He is one of the many players who post season surgery and i expect that has impacted his preparation. . As Goody and other people from the club have pointed out, our all team defensive pressure in the first 3 rounds was woeful so that also makes it hard for defenders. And the entire back six has struggled (not helped by Mays lack of discipline and poor physical preparation i might add). But I expect Omac will soon get back to the his best and have little doubt he will continue to be selected. And again i'm happy to back the judgement of a coach who I rate as perhaps the best we have had in the many years i have followed the dees. Others can please themselves and no doubt will.

  14. We have an extra 3 days rest over the Saints. If we can't beat them with such a head start then we don't deserve to compete for finals. The players and coaches will not have forgotten how we let that game slip last year: too little, too late. We will win.

  18. Is it just me or is expecting a bunch of players to run back to their quadrant at every single stoppage in the time it takes the umpire to throw the ball up slightly unreasonable? All this would do is slow the game down. The game is over-officiated enough as it is.

  20. Nasher, I reckon when Jeffy plays a game like yesterday , his confidence soars! I wouldn't risk an extended break given Casey has a Bye next week. I think we pull the trigger and give him a chance, sooner rather than later. Next week ideal and if it works I reckon we go a long way towards a win. In a team lacking seriously good finishers with goal sense and pace, against the AINTS he must play! How many games has Stretch, Spargo, et al taken and become match winners. ZERO. Jeffy can and has done this for us and so he plays.

  21. Last year I searched for the rules and had a similar experience to Mazer R. It's an absolute disgrace. Normally people say in a choice between a conspiracy and a stuff-up, choose the latter. But hiding the rules of a game is so mind-boggingly unlikely as a stuff up, you have to wonder. About time one of our so-called sporting journos at least drew attention to this.

( must admit I am not one of his fans) but he hardly made an error and his ball handling on a dewy night was very good. Not to drop for Saints at least. Tigers will need defence of speed speed and more speed! Though.

  28. Thought it was worth bumping this after last night Freo v WC game. I thought Lyon showed how to beat the control and possession game plan after qtr time. After the first qtr Freo seemed to allow WC uncontested possessions in the back half when they lost the ball. They played something resembling the old flood. They did not press or waste energy trying to shut down WC forward of centre. If they had better skills the Dockers would have won. WC won uncontested possessions by 72, marks by 54, stoppage clearances by 13, but didn’t look like they knew what to do once they got it forward of centre because the flood of Freo players cut all of WCs space. Dockets were +13 in intercepts, probably mostly in defensive half and were effective in getting the ball back forward. Is this what we’ll start seeing to counter the WC type game plan.

  29. Agreed. The weaker opposition could assist Jeffy build on that confidence he needs to perform. Jeff is a naturally very shy and quite complex young man and poor games cause him to retreat into his shell for extended periods. Up and running, J. Garlett is perhaps the only player on our list who can change a game in a single quarter. We desperately need him.

Harmes' importance is increasing. Nice hands, goalkicker. Disposals looked to have improved, also. Don't be fooled by Patracca's disposal count... he was super efficient & clean tonight. Beautiful game kid. Jones, you bleed red & blue. So happy for you. Melksham, ... well, he's now just a gun. He is confidence personified & super super important. In the 'very important players to this club' kinda guy. Max, IS the very important guy. Hunt's looking fit. Top 3rQ... wrapped for him. Hibb - Better, i think? Fritsch - Better. Oscar - Worser Preuss - Massive guy. Weed knows how to kick for goal... very confident & settled in approach. Could go on. ??

  34. Garlett for Spargo... Spargo had some nice little cameos but can't lay a solid tackle and opposition players know & expose him.... If he can't tackle then he needs to get a lot more possession & hit the scoreboard regularly, neither of which he does. Oscar probably rested with concussion.

  41. I think your clutching at straws a little binman to say his gut running to assist zoning is a reason he played well. If this is all he is offering to the team at the moment plus some token “one per-centres” he’s on thin ice. With the 6v6 he can’t just slide a little spoil down in front of him, he needs to really smoke it ten rows back. I’d love to see him more courageous in the air and throw himself at some contests. I’m not going to get into him about a couple possessions he turned it over as he’s usually fairly safe with the pill once it’s in his hands. Hes not looking confident at the moment but I still think he will be fine within a couple years. Just not right now for me

But now with Scully gone I just look at them as a team which I can barrack for when they play Geelong, Essendon and C'wood (and anyone else if it suits MFC position on ladder etc.) . Interesting and when people complain of bad delivery into the forward line that is what the chaos brand entails... just push it forward. Problem is that it just doesn't work if you don't have forward pressure..ergo the last two weeks
