  1. During a heavy day with the lads at a pub early 2000's I was watching one of Troy Broadbridge's early awkward games and after a surprising piece of play yelled at the TV "go you big red fire engine". I followed him with curiosity during his early time at Sandy and across his 40 games for the MFC. I joined this site the year after his passing and it just felt right at the time as a reminder that there is so much more than football.

  2. not quite as obvious as it sounds .... blew the head gasket on my first car - a 1976 Corolla, by trying to catch and follow a certain bogan cult figure of the early-mid 90's whose number plate read JAKO13 while driving along the wonderful dump of the then South Eastern Arterial... was stoked at the time to see him - got the old [censored] heap of a car to 130 clicks.... and it died

  3. P.S. since I'm sure you're all interested, this is the full image of that I used for my profile pic. Rodney in full flight and proudly displaying that famous No.14, subsequently proudly worn by a number of other tough high quality backman at the MFC continuing the legacy.

  4. I’m quite proud of my display pic. It’s what should have been in 2000. I got it from a friend who got it from someone at the Herald Sun.

  6. Arrived in Nanjing to do a few weeks work filling in for someone needing to go home for family reasons. When I met the guy, talk soon turned to football and he asked me who I followed. I did my usual, slightly embarrassed, "Ahh, the Dees mate." His response, "How good is Clayton Oliver?" Turns out he's a lifelong supporter. Who'd have thought you'd be in China and the first Australian you meet is a Dees fan? Go DEES!

  7. I like Bugg, and I wish him well at Carlton. He had limitations as a player, but he seemed to run hard (both ways), and always seemed respectful about, and appreciative for, his time at the Dees. He also seemed genuinely remorseful for the incident with Mills. To put the boot into this dude on the way out is tres ordinaire.

  11. Well the obvious #1 wish would be for a flag, and for me to be at the ground watching. Next, in no particular order so I can do without the numbers for each line are, ..... # Petracca to finally deliver on the hype and become an AA. # Jake Lever to recover fully from his knee, and stay fit/in form from early/mid-season. (We don't need him to rush back) # S.May to slot into the backline from Rd 1 like he has played in our team for years. # Viney to recover 100% and stay that way all year. I don't need to wish for him to play well because if he if fit, we know how good he is. I could actually stop right there because if those 4 things happen, we are a real shot at the flag, but for the sake of listing some other wishes, I will keep going # KK and/or Hunt and/or Stretch to own the Wings. (We haven't had a great winger for many years) # Preuss to play the relief ruck-switching forward well enough to give us the option to rest Maxy in games we don't need our A team. Even better would be for Preuss to play well enough to become a part of our A-Team. # Weid to have a great year, and re-sign early in the season before going Ape droppings in front of goal from mid-season onwards. *I only hope to delay the Ape droppings part to keep his contract size manageable. (I have genuine faith that this kid is going to be a star of the comp in the coming years). # Jeffy G to develop a massive hunger for the contest, and become our first choice small forward. (Ok, so this is a bit of a Hail Mary, but its a wish list after all) # NO MAJOR INJURIES !! This is the key to ANY clubs season. If I can't have any of the other wishes, this one will do me fine. No serious injuries to our best 22 and we will be as good a chance as anyone. Throw in 2 or 3 other the other wishes and our supporters will be off their faces with happiness at seasons end. Go Dees.

  12. Infinity should step up to be the BOJ sponsor? Roy Morgan produce research each year about car sponsorship of AFL, as the automakers get good ROI from it. Seems cheap for a car manufacturer to not be a major sponsor. If Infinity don’t want it then Pert has history signing sponsorships with car manufacturers.

  13. The Mongrel Pre-Season Player Power Rankings 20-11 AFL Season 2019 15 – ANGUS BRAYSHAW (MELBOURNE) Surprise again! With the Dees improving to become a top team in 2018, I got to watch plenty of their games, and one thing kept jumping out at me – when was someone going to go and stand next to Angus Bloody Brayshaw at centre bounces? With Jack Viney on the sidelines, and Clayton Oliver often the target of negating mids, Max Gawn continually tapped the ball straight down Brayshaw’s throat. I don’t often yell at the TV (OK, sometimes when the remote isn’t working, or a game won’t load, I get a little [censored] at it) but a couple of times I looked across at whomever was unlucky enough to be close by and would ask “Why won’t someone man him up?” Sadly, my missus didn’t know what I was talking about, and would largely ignore my question, so I’d repeat it and direct it at the TV. 2018 was Brayshaw’s fourth year in the game, and the leap he made was significant. He was +7.09 in disposals, averaging 26.09 for the season, and jumped to 4.27 clearances per game. That’s +2.87 from 2017. In one stretch, he had 6+ clearances in eight out of nine games. We’re catching a star in the making, here – a young man who hasn’t sat back and waited for opportunity; he created one and has made the most out of it. As he enters year five of his AFL career, Brayshaw has already shown the ability to capture the attention of the umpires. He took home third place in the 2018 Brownlow, with 21 votes. Was it a surprise? I’d say it was, since he wasn’t even in attendance. I’d also say that the AFL won’t make that mistake again. In their Preliminary Final loss to West Coast, Brayshaw was one of the few to truly stand up. He collected 29 touches to be the most effective Demon on the ground – a great sign as he continues to develop. So much of what Melbourne is, and will be in 2019, relies on Max Gawn, but the development of players like Brayshaw, Oliver, Petracca (maybe) and Viney in the middle is paramount to the Demon surge toward a flag. Where do we see the ceiling for Brayshaw? Whilst a fit Viney takes a lot of the heat in the guts, and Oliver’s presence will continue to draw a lot of attention, Brayshaw as a third midfielder is an absolute luxury, and as a result could see him get off the chain again in 2019. An improvement on his 26 touches per game may be enough to elevate him into the conversation for All-Australian selection in 2019, and could a better result in the Brownlow be a reality? Author : HB Meyers Let's hope what ever is holding his training back doesn't impact his 2019 performance.

  15. And we can now flag this thread as a fabulous example of flogging a dead horse...... Loved Pedo as a person who got the absolute best out of himself and although he was a square peg in a round hole, he managed to engage, encourage and support on the field the younger guys coming through. He can go on with the rest of his life knowing he did all he could and considering how he came to us from NM I'd think he was enormously thankful of his time at the MFC. I believe that showed in everything he did. Having spoken to him a number of times I believe he would be appalled at the lack of support for Smith and I know he thinks Smith has had a terrible run at it due to injury. As far as your assertions go, I don't place much value on quotes of stats that don't have an underlying analysis of the circumstances. Eg, How often was Smith coming back from an injury vs Pedo who was at peak fitness when playing for Casey?

  19. Some of my friends (and quite likely some not so friendly observers at matches) seem to believe, for some very strange reason, that I am just a little one eyed about the amazing mighty Demons. And it was not until a while after I registered that it was pointed out, interestingly by an optometrist, that I couldn’t spell?

  20. I don’t see how one can say that Smith “is a better forward than Pedersen”: sure he may become one but is entirely an unknown quantity at this stage. But Pedersen has run his race, and Smith is still in the running. And I do agree that this whole thread is anything other than comparing like with like, which at least to me makes it fairly meaningless

  21. Buggy was useful while we were building a stronger list and that others were coming on and becoming excellent players. It showed as we finished the season in the finals. Although Buggy gave us some good moments and kicked multiple goal at times, he was also a tough nut which was a part of his game. His skills were average at the very best and that wasn't enough for him to play a vital part in our best 22. So off he goes to a very average team. Good luck to T.Bugg and l hope he does well for himself as he should get a game at CGWS.

  22. In all honesty I picked my stage name before I realized that such direct reference to former players wasn't exactly the done thing on Demonland. But that all said, this bloke was pretty much my favorite player as a kid and an absolute bloody legend of the MFC, so I'm sticking to it.

  25. Hi Fellow Demonlanders, Happy New Year to all, and thanks so much to the folk who have been getting down to training and posting reports. I was interested to read that Angus Brayshaw wasn't allowed to do the traditional Brayshaw family 100 x 100 metre sprints on Christmas Day this year. Many of the training reports posted so far have also noted that Angus has been absent or not participated. Does anyone know what Angus is struggling with at the moment? After such a fantastic 2018 season we really need Angus in tip top shape for the 2019 season. Cheers, Go Dees!!

  32. He has only dropped a few playing No.s to 40 at Carlscum. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/unfinished-business-for-new-carlton-recruit-tom-bugg-after-enduring-tough-18-months-at-melbourne/news-story/bfa0199ed585ff4fb79913518ed9d33b Reading the article, it also states that Carlscum have now recruited 11 ex GWS players (mostly thanks to sos) - perhaps they could rename Carlscum to the GWS reserves team. ...actually GWS's NEAFL team would probably beat Carlscum these days, so perhaps the GWS reject squad would be more appropriate.

  34. No matter which way you cut it 'Cranky', Pedders was finished as an AFL player. I suspect Smith will be gone at the end of this season but the ball is in his court now. He will need an outstanding season at Casey and to really take his opportunities if he gets the call up.

  35. We will be playing 3 KPF's at times, from TMac, Weid and Preuss. If one goes down, we'll still have two up forward. If two go down we will consider playing a back up KPP such as T Smith or Pedo, but we may also consider playing AVB forward or shifting one of the medium/KPDs May, OMac, Frost or J Smith (we probably won't play all four in the backline at once) forward. I think Tim Smith has effectively been kept as our 3rd ruck option to protect TMac in case Gawn and Preuss go down. He might get a run as a forward on form but that isn't likely. However it is unlikely that Pedo would get a run either.

  36. I assume you will have T-Mac and Weid in your best 22? Now do your side if one is unavailable. Now do your side if both are unavailable. There is best 22 and then next up based on position. If this happens it appears we will be playing one tall KPF or relying on the resting ruck as the second tall or expecting the role to filled by one of two Smiths or Keilty. The only other would be to tinker with our back 6 which i suspect will be unlikely. Another year for Ped as the last spot on our list I would have thought would have been a reasonable contingency. T Smith I feel is limited but really has not had a clear run of it once he has made the senior side.

  38. Not training with the main group, not listed as injured, must be a player rift, GONE! But in all seriousness, I'd much prefer the Club say nothing. He may have a long term injury that other teams may target next year or a personal issue he doesn't want made public.

  44. I can't see a single thing in Tim Smith that would warrant him being on an AFL list. The one thing he was supposed to bring to the AFL table was elite accuracy, but at 4 goals 5 thus far, he couldn't even excel at that. However, I see a brighter future in our other Smith

  46. Not too sure of the date (around 2010) I decided to play at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast. Had paid and was waiting to join a group when the pro came up and said let them go and I have put you with the next group. No problems as the Japanese group left and I joined up with the next group. Well I was really happy ( I was wearing a MFC logo shirt) as he joined me up with Jeff White. What a day. By god he could hit a ball.

  47. I was on a diving trip in West Papua a few weeks ago and we made a stop at a remote island called Banda Island. I have been there before and always take along a bag of school supplies for the kids. To my shock and delight there were two mischievous little boys at the port in Melbourne Demon T-shirts. Admittedly they were pretty well worn and had seen better days and I asked one of them if he knew what the emblem was. He looked at me like I was stupid and said ‘Go Dees’. He didn’t know where the T-shirts had come from and they looked as though they had been handed down several times. I was so chuffed as most of the other passengers on the boat were from Perth and WCE supporters. Didn’t see any of their T-shirts. Made a mental note to bring along half a dozen next year when I go back.
