  2. I’ve had a quick chat to contact at the club. A little bit if guesswork to fill in blanks, but Hogan isn’t a standard cat. He’s a bit introverted, aloof and hard to get to know. Just like any workplace, there is a prevailing culture and Hogan doesn’t quite fit in. So he’s probably never going to have the pull of staying to be with his boys, because he isn’t one of the boys. The culture extends to the broader footy department and the relatively young staff that relates reasonably well to the current player group. So this means despite his obvious talent, there is more openness from the footy department to explore options than there would be than if Hogan was “one of the boys”. It just reinforces a footy club has far more dynamics at play than pure onfield footy ability. There are those on the inner, those on the outer, favourites, politics etc. These dynamics play out in week to week team selection too and can explain why some guys seem to play irrespective of form, whereas others always seem one mediocre game away from getting dropped.

  3. A top 5 pick I'd give a 1 in 4 chance of being a star, 4 in 5 chance of being a quality player. There are a hell of a lot of top 10 picks who are just good players, nothing too special. Hogan is a star - for a 23 year old. Will be unstoppable when he's 25-28. Unstoppable! Hogan in 3 years time... stop and consider this for a moment. He is a generational player, a young guy who's had a heap of off field stuff to deal with - and yet - what a contribution. Think I would prefer to keep him. Feel pretty confident the FD know his value.

  5. How anyone could be advocating for an 86kg 200cm plus stick insect defies belief. We have just entered our first Premiership window for almost 20yrs. If we add just a few more adult bodies with the required skill into the team, we may just be able to end our 5 decade plus flag famine. Load up, win as many flags as we can, then we can all sit back and watch the rebuild again, finally knowing what its like to drink from that cup.

  6. I think what people are missing is that we are about outcomes and winning flags, not winning or losing trades. If we get our outcome by trading Jesse we won't worry the small stuff. If we don't get our outcome we won't trade.

  9. How times change. A few years ago, Hogan's departure would have been seen as a sign of failure by the club, of yet another star player leaving for the money and success at another club. Perhaps the Frawley departure is a case in point, and he was not even a star. Now most of us have confidence in this footy club and no longer see us as the whipping boy of the Victorian based clubs. We have tasted success and have confidence in the club and its decision makers. Confidence and belief is an amazing thing. We think the clubs decision makers will do the right thing and many now concede that losing Hogan may not be such a bad thing. Imagine the media's take on it a few years ago. No longer. I would love to see Hogan remain but I now have a different feeling about it all. No longer the sentiment of loyalty but a quest for success, whatever it takes.

  10. NAB AFL Trade Radio @traderadio @sam_mcclure : If I'm@freodockers , I'm saying Hogan wants to come home and I'm giving pick 5 and nothing else. If Melbourne don't want that, I'm going to the draft. ok Sam......?‍♂️?‍♂️

  11. The more I think about this the more I feel it has been instigated by the club... They approached Jesse and said 'what are your plans going forward? If you are thinking of heading back to Perth it would be better for us to know now as we can do a better deal than in 12m time. Otherwise we will start discussions on a long term deal. We want you but understand you may be torn about staying. We're also planning our list for a tilt at the flag and don't want to disrupt it in 12m time.' Jesse thinks about it. Flys to Perth, His manager chats to the Dockers. And here we are. If so it is probably very smart from our guys.

  12. Lachie Weller Pick 2 last year. Jesse Hogan not worth picks 4 & 5 or 5 & 6 . Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I actually believe he is worth more as a proven developed player and a Freo player thrown in to the deal with a pick from us would be well within the realms of reasonableness.

  16. Sam Mclure made me really angry this morning. But it seems i am not alone. Why are these shiitstirrers allowed to be on Air? Hogan is worth 2 FIRST ROUND Picks at least. If that deal is not wanted Jesse plays next year under his present contract. You Mclure are lucky i do not know where your office is, because you need a serious talking down. Your ego is far too large and your haircut is a complete disgrace. Pizz of you low life piece of junkmail...

  17. If Freo don’t give two top 10 picks this year then he plays for us and I couldn’t care if he leaves for the draft the year after. Next year with Hogan we have a good crack at top 4. This trade either benefits us or don’t do it. Don’t want equal or fair.

  20. Fox Footy seem to think it's pick 4 only, and old mate Tom Morris thinks we can't have both Jesse and Steven May due to the salary cap. How do these people get jobs?

  21. It is possible that Jason Taylor has identified a premium early draft prospect and we want to trade in to get him like we did with Clarrie and Weed. There's a lot of different scenarios to play out. Fascinating times. The report that we asked permission to trade our 2019 1st just adds to the intrigue. I've only seen a couple of posters say this and haven't seen an official confirmation though? I guess it just provides more flexibility and may not be directed at a specific target. Sounds like future picks will be eligible in draft night live pick trading too http://m.afl.com.au/news/2018-08-08/twoday-draft-to-add-live-pick-trading

  22. A draft pick could be Toumpas, Cook or whoever, in other words no guarantee as to how a player picked will go in the big league. Jesse Hogan is a developed beast with 70 games behind him and who leads the stats in nearly every category of today's forwards. 4/5 or 5/6 pie in the sky, hardly, it is my bare minimum. The boy is contracted and Freo are desperate for a big name and key forward and he is both. Freo offered 2 first round picks for Cam McCarthy, a great footballer there. I think JH is worth more.

  23. For me it’s simple 2 top 10 draft picks or we keep Jessie. Have a crack for a flag with him next year and if he still wants to go we get a first round pick next year. If that’s all Freo are will to cough up this year then it will be no big loss.
    6 points
  24. The thing freo will be very aware of is Jesse isn’t 100% on staying or leaving and there is a serious possibility if he stayed and we had s great year and won the flag or went close, he may well decide this is pretty exciting I’m going to stick around. This may be their only chance because he’s already knocked them back multiple times so they won’t risk it by haggling too much, they know he’s worth 4&5 and that’s what they will give up. If they want to swap 5 to the power and give us 4&9 they can throw in Alex Pearce as well to further bolster our backline we hold all the cards. If freo want him, he’s theirs by they have to pay the price we set, and they should be grateful, given the player Jesse is and will become 4&5 is pretty reasonable. Treloar was 2&7 and Jesse is a key position player as well.. if Gibbs, treloar and lever are 2 first rounders then Jesse possibly is more like 3

  25. These blokes on SEN, Dal Santo and whoever this other Fa-log is, are just guessing and dribbling shite. They just said that the Hogan deal will go down to the last minute deadline. Why would that happen? Melbourne won’t let that happen. They have clearly stated thy Hogan will decide what he wants before next week. Melbourne need to know as they are after May and others. They won’t take the top10 picks to the draft. This is so well known and Mahoney has given away plenty. They are now discussing May and Sam McClure reckons he gets to melbourne. How can that happen if Hogan doesn’t go. Making it up. I wanna ring in.

  26. Freo offer pick 5. Melbourne apologise to Hogan and say we are happy to let you go but freo are low balling us. We have a crack at the flag with Hogan in 2019, telling him it's only one more year until he's a free agent. In the meantime, collingwood has no bargining chips for May, nor does Hawthorn, so May probably stays at GC for another year. At the end of 2019, Hogan might leave, or maybe we convinced him to stay. Further May becomes a free agent and there is 0 chance he stays at GC. So we can pick up May for free and have a chance at retaining Hogan. We also come out looking like the good guys, as freo are the ones not willing to pay his worth. Furthermore, Kennedy may retire so WC become a big player. We hold the chips here, for once. Hogan is not at odds with the club at all, and if he had to play one more year here, he would suck it up and even possibly enjoy it.

  27. We simply have the upper hand.. McClure is clueless, and doesnt realise that Hogan is still contracted. So its either cough up 2 first round picks or we hold onto him for another year to convince him to stay or he goes to West Coast.

  28. The 1989 AFL National Draft was never considered a great draft in terms of producing “name” footballers. Richmond kicked the draft off with its selection of Anthony Banik from Won Wron Woodside who’s career fell just short of 50 games. The Eagles snared a winner at #4 in Peter Matera while North Melbourne plucked another Sandgroper in Mark Brayshaw at 6. He managed only 32 games but managed to father three young players on current AFL lists, two of who were top three draft picks. For the Melbourne Football Club, that draft was a complete disaster with the selections drawing blanks across the board. However, one of the players selected at pick 85, a young Gaelic footballer from County Londonderry, Northern Ireland lasted a year and was cut at a time clubs had to reduce their list by 10 with the TAC Cup replacing the under-19s. He was Anthony Tohill, a versatile sportsman who went back home, became a Gaelic football champion, tried out for Manchester United at soccer at one stage and later became a star for his country in the International Rules Series. The late Jimmy Stynes called the club’s decision to cut the 193cm Tohill as “one of the biggest mistakes ever". Now his son Anton is here trying his luck at the AFL Draft Combine which commenced today. According to AFL Draft Guru, Kevin Sheahan, the 198cm Anton is a “chip off the block” who “looks "so natural with his ball drop, runs 2.95 for 20m and has a lovely running gait. "He's probably more a key-position option than a ruckman." Given that the Demons have already signed two Category B Rookies and haven’t moved to re-embrace the Irish experiment, it’s unlikely that they will be able to snare the younger Tohill but with those attributes and the family history, it’s unlikely that he’ll be allowed off the leash as easily as his now famous father.

  32. Had a chat with a mate of mine that is close to the club and this whole situation is very fluid. Club will support whatever direction Hogan will decide upon as long as they get fair compo if he is open to a move. Current thinking is that Hogan will also support the club getting fair compo if that is the case. It is far from certain that he will be open to a trade this season. Possible outcomes: Open to a trade as long as there is fair compo. Stays put and extends contract till RFA.

  34. Yesterday I shared a tram with the President of the East Melbourne Group on his way to VCAT! Now he professes to be a MFC supporter (but I think that he is too tight to take out a membership) so I was happy for him to ask me what I thought about the proposed training facility. I am right behind this project (and have lived in East Melbourne for twice as long as he has) and I told him that I felt that it would be great for the local community as an asset and the football public. It came as no surprise to hear that he is against it (as he is a classic NIMBY and opposes everything) so I suspect that I may have to re-enter local politics and try and prevent their opposition. Any other East Melbourne residents on Demonland happy to put together a ticket to take over the East Melbourne Group?

  35. Well Trade Radio on a week before any actual trades can be done has brought about some of the worst radio ever. Like others I was on the verge of calling in but then I thought that's exactly what Hutchy wants to happen to fill in the hours. But dead set that muppet Sam Scoop McClure saying Melbourne will do that pick 5 trade for Hogan because they want May, no they wont, they will do the deal when they get two first rounders for Hogan. Then to top it off he says how Essendon will need to give up this years and next years first round pick for Shiel but look out Carlton will get Shiel for just next years first round pick what an idiot.

  38. What? Can't we just tell Gaff he'll play in the middle for us a la Howe in the forward line for Collingwood and then accept the all the genius coaching plaudits when we push him outside for the following six years? I'm pretty sure that's what we're doing with Pruess. Yeah, sure Braydon, can we call you Braydes? - we're definitely going to play two rucks next year . . . . . . until the very first time it doesn't work out. But we share the same name and colours as Casey now and Max will probably retire or slow down sometime around 2024.

  40. I think there are 3 kinds of trades for players: Blockbusters with early picks and big salary involved: e.g. Lever, May Role players for known quantities: e.g. Vince, Lewis, Hibberd, Melksham, Garlett, Tyson, Bugg, Preuss Speculation for players that have unrealised potential: Frost, Balic, McKenna, Kennedy, KK In some ways #3 are most interesting

  43. Don't take to much out of our cap space being tight based on Mahoney saying we can't afford to get May without the Hogan deal. He is a smart man he never mentioned money in his discussion it was assumed as a given but, without Hogan going to Freo we don't have the picks to get May to our club

  44. At this time of the year people like Sam McClure show up how little they actually know about player value. All they are interested in is seeing trades actually happen, rumours being floated, and activity in general. There is no risk in this draft/trade journalism because if it doesn't happen there are so many excuses that they can fall back upon. Simple facts Hogan when compared to other key forward greats is tracking better statistically than most of them. He's had multiple 40+ goal seasons whilst often not playing the whole season. Hogan is still only 23, he's got the bulk of his career ahead of him, he's coming into his prime. Treloar was traded for 2 first round picks (7 and 7 in the following year) and key forwards rate much higher than midfielders in terms of trade value. Freo are desperate for a quality key forward, and they are the ones who need to pay overs to get him out of contract a year early. Melbourne don't have to trade him, and if we get him to honour the contract I have no doubt West Coast will become interested next year. No doubt in my mind that the MFC are definitely in the box seat for this trade, we are going to accommodate an offer by Freo if Hogan wants to head home, but we are not giving him away for nothing. The only thing that would see us accepting a single pick would be if there is a player, worth a first round pick, being thrown as part of the deal instead. Which could play out if they are desperate to get Lobb in as well. My only concern is that Lyon is saying 2 first round picks. I'd be saying 2 top 10 picks and one needs to be around the 5 or 6 mark.

  46. Rule: Clubs must make at least two first-round selections in each four-year period. If they don't, they will face restrictions from trading any further first-round draft picks. Geelong may need to play catch up http://www.geelongcats.com.au/news/2018-07-19/cats-first-round-requirements With no first round picks in 2016, 2017, 2018 (might change) used, technically we need to trade in a first round pick this year or an extra one next year otherwise we won't have the required two picks (unless we get exemption) but like Geelong it eventually catches up with you. I can't find any reference to an mfc request to trade our 2019 pick. I would suggest if we had it would be public knowledge by now as the trade starts in a few days. As an aside, something that is untested with the AFL is the number of 1st round picks taken over a period ie would we get an allowance for traded in an extra pick in 2015? Edit: Just re-read the AFL article in the above link and found this line: "... the rest of the competition has already met its quota and is free to place 2018 and 2019 first-round picks on the table." So we don't need permission.
