  2. If anyone is concerned about recovery after the Darwin game, don’t be. The players ran rings around 10yr olds at the school holiday clinic at Goschs this morning. All players were in an extremely good mood after a winning weekend. Well organised clinic with lots of different activities and the all the kids present had a ball. Well done MFC! Enough about the kids now, I needed a Monday footy fix. Managed to sneak a few questions to some of the boys. Apart from the obvious heat and humidity issues, they have recovered rather well and will be fine come Saturday ( let’s hope). Great to see some of the parents give a big welcome and good to see you back to AVB.

  3. Hilarious For years we have lamented a chronic lack of mongrel and aggression in our team and now that we have it, many of us complain because people like Lewis give away 50's! That's the downside, the upside is Lewis is an incredibly good decision maker, has saved our butts time and time again and makes every other player think twice when he is on the field because of his unpredictable nature.

  4. I can recall a few years ago we played Hawthorn in the wet and we bemoaned our lack of ability to just hack the ball forward at all costs. We played too cute, while the Hawks had smart players who, in 50/50 situations, just kicked the ball forward off the ground to gain ground for their side. Now, we have Lewis doing the same thing many of us asked for a few years back, and we're potting him for it. Okay, he missed one, but he also connected with a couple as he tried to play the percentages in those 50/50 contests - instead of risking it with the slippery ball, he tried to simply get it forward to give us a chance and to keep it out of their forward half. I don't see what's wrong with that. If he was doing it on a day with perfect conditions then yes, it's very lazy footy. But not when the ball is as slippery as it was. He was attempting to do the right thing, even if it didn't always come off.

  5. Geez some of the MFCSS wrist slashing on here is ridiculous and short sighted. We've waited so long to be a great side that none of us, even those who can remember the 60s, recognise the process that it takes to become one. We are nowhere near there, but it is happening. Doesn't happen overnight or necessarily in 4 or even 5 years. Look at the Frozen water coached Cats of the 2000s. Look at Richmond; look at where they were and the time the club gave Hardwick to learn his trade and figure out how to make them great. Compare that to the Dogs, who did it as a one off and will wallow in mediocrity again for the next 50 years. Relevant to this is the [censored] being heaped on Lewis. He knows the process and is guiding our next generational champions to fulfilling their potential. No doubt he is getting close, but he still puts in cracking matches and makes good decisions. He also comes from that Hawks culture that the team and club come first, and that is the culture that will make us great. He will be one of those for whom we can thank for what is coming. Temperance, Demonlanders. Temperance. Edit: In: Vince Out: Lewis (joke) Out: J Smith Also, Fritsch doing his own wingman version of Lever's role is something I can get behind

  8. So is Trac. Neal Bullen is going at 18.12 for the season. Trac is at 10.12, so not only is he less accurate, he has also had a lot less shots on goal while playing a lot more time as a forward. Neal Bullen is not in the side for his silky smooth skills. He is a workhorse and is in the side to cover ground.

  9. It appears that the team spirit is really good at Casey - plenty of AFL listed players and they all seem to be pulling in the same direction. It really showed in a tough uncompromising effort. Tyson, Pedo, Bugg, JKH, Weid, Hannan, Kent, Balic, Wagner - all going hard despite probably being disappointed to not be playing AFL. It's a credit to Jade Rawlings.

  12. Not that it was a wonderful performance on Saturday but feeling a bit better about MFC this week. It was a solid win. Bringing Frost into the back half has added a bit more of both height and pace. Spargo and Jeff, and Oliver, adds a bit more pace/ nip in the forward half. My view is that if we can get Hunt fit and inform that would add a little more and give us the best chance to complete with the top teams. I know making the 8 is the principal aim but I’m not giving top 4 away just yet. All our rivals are copping injuries. We are in comparative good shape, and things like that count. But the big game will be Geelong at Geelong 2 weeks from now. We must take them.

  13. We aren't the only ones with a difficult run to make finals. How the contenders shape up: The Pies and Sydney have the toughest run. Both have quite a few injuries and I'm counting 5 of their 7 games to be 8 point games. So I reckon spots 2 to 5 could change quite a bit. While Adelaide and Ess are effectively out of the running they can still mess up the Wins/Losses for the contenders. Wouldn't mind it if the young Lions pinch a game here or there! I reckon we will make it: wins vs WB, Adel, GCS. Geelong is 50/50. They are playing poorly and their narrow ground suits our game plan (altho they will have an extra two days rest). WCE and GWS are also 50/50 depending on how many of their injured players are back at the time we play them. Sydney is a loss for mine. Unless North completely lose the plot their very easy run will get them in. Ditto Hawks. Who drops out of the 8 for North. Demons or Cats? We must beat Geelong to get a game up on them.

  15. I don't understand why the umpire should be able to call a video review in that situation at all. No score was called, play went on then in a different piece of play Garlett kicked a goal. How far back are they allowed to go with the video review? If no score is called at the time of the incident then it is "play on" and the umpire should not be allowed to revisit it after the fact. What if play had continued for 30 seconds in the goal square between Petracca running into the post and the eventual goal? Still subject to review?

  16. Just met neighbours going thru a fence issue and in general conversation we realized we follow Melbourne. They are not members but will join next year if we have a good year. Good result on the fence ensued. Then went to the Alfred for eye checkup (make sure I see free kicks on the other side of the ground) and the lady looking after me also followed Melbourne (I talk a lot) and she said her whole family of eight members follow Melbourne but not one is a member. Do well this year and we should re-connect with many supporters who with a push will join. All up to the boys on the ground and the FD moving forward. A sleeping giant may just awake.

  25. I find that most people are so used to watching football that they don’t fully understand how difficult it is to play the game at this level. This is especially the case when the ball is slippery. The game is so fast that you need to be clean, otherwise you get hammered. So much so that having clean hands is probably the number one asset that recruiters will use to rule out potential draftees. Wet games are when you see low scores and slow ball movement. But this sort of game is very difficult for a player because it’s slippery, but not enough that every ball is fumbled. We see it here and also the Hawthorn game earlier. You can’t win with a wet weather plan, but you are going to make a lot of mistakes. The margins are so small either way. It’s like a Formula 1 race in the rain. If it’s fully wet then you can put on wet tyres. But if the track is only a little bit wet then you can’t use the wet tyres even though it’s easier to drive because the other cars on dry weather slick tyres, for all their difficulty in the conditions, will be so much faster over the course of the lap. In slippery conditions you need to take the game on to win, but you need to appreciate that this will also result in more mistakes than usual.

  26. I wasn’t expecting him to be the huge possession winner he is. Has had over 30 possessions in 4 of his 12 games, and at least two of those where he didn’t were prior to finally being put in the guts. Having an outstanding season. I wasn’t as worried as many others that he wouldn’t hit his straps, but nonetheless it’s a relief to see him out the other side of the issues and playing with confidence.

  28. And there's reasonable wisdom in the contention that a gazillion points doesn't necessarily translate to a gazillion goals if a team had kicked straight, in that the ball is returned to the middle and there's less forward repeat points. But on this occasion I was so confident in our clearance ability against Freo and forward movement that I think if we'd kicked straight we could have put on 30. Looking at the replay - I would say that at least 12 of the points were high-percentage shots or very easily missed open opportunities (not counting the high number of dropped marks in the fifty where he had clear hands to the ball in front position), whereas we didn't really score any low percentage goals. Got over the line after nearly mucking a few up and got given a couple of soft freebies (balanced in part by the Petracca review error an instance or two the other way). But if you take two thirds of those misses and add a quarter of the longer-shots that's an extra 12 goals right there alone. The conditions were bad but this was a complete annihilation in the centre - with all due respect for the poor opposition. In other circumstances, the clear equivalent of a 100-point win. We were effectively unlucky.

  32. The spread when we won the ball around the stoppages looked much more cohesive. I actually thought Petracca was particularly good in that regard. Definitely his best midfield game this season. He seemed more calm with ball in hand and didn't rush like he has been this season. Very promising.

  34. We beat West Coast in Perth last year and I expect we will need to do the same this year to make finals. Either that or we need to beat Geelong in Geelong. Both are going to be hard tasks, especially when the umpiring inevitably goes their way.

  37. The quiz that over 90% of first-year students fail! Can you nail the answer they couldn't? Click here to see. Part one: You're running at full (albeit at your own limited) speed toward the ball. You notice that a capable teammate will arrive there ahead of you yet is running in the opposite direction of your goals, with no options ahead on the pivot but an opposition player player closing in on both your defensive and attacking sides, roughly equidistant and approximately eight metres from the where the ball currently is. If you apply a shepherd outside of the five-metre radius of the ball, you may be penalised for a closely-watched 'block'. Q: What do you do? A: sheperd the guy on the right anyway. B. sheperd the guy on the left anyway. C. go for the ball. D. try to create an overlap in space. Part two: The average reading speed for more complex written material such as the equation above is about 100 words per minute. The above question consists of roughly 100 words. Meanwhile, a series of humans are travelling at an average speed of 14 kilometers per hour from four separate directions toward the effectively random bounce of an oval-shaped football which is approximately eight metres away at present. Q: What is your available reaction time in answering this quiz as a comparative ratio to the central participant in Part one in determining what to do?

  40. That’s the right thing to do in those conditions. The humidity meant the ball was slippery, so you likely won’t be able to pick it up cleanly and are better off just keeping it moving forward like the Tigers (and Hawks of yesteryear) do so well. The players interviewed after the game said the conditions were akin to a wet game after a downpour. The lack of sheperd is also not the worst, as he trusted Trac to win the ball and get it out to him. Too often this year all our players get sucked into the contest and no one is left on the outside to receive and distribute. While it doesn’t look great on review, it was the right thing to do and would’ve worked in better conditions.

  43. This is the Rule : if the player touches the post but not the ball it is play on. The goal umpire in this incident called it a goal and asked for a review, to see if the ball touched the post earlier, when CP touched the post. If the video we saw was used as the only video, then we have a wrong call, as it didn't show the ball touching the post and the umpire's call should have stood.. If there were different views and they showed the ball touching the post, correct call. However, as this was Darwin and there would be less cameras and maybe an inexperienced camera umpire, he may have guessed and it was an incorrect call. Nothing we saw on the TV showed the ball in contact with the post, so I think there is a strong chance we got dudded.

  45. Just watching the replay and have been taking notice of Fritsch around stoppages. His positioning and timing is very very good. When he knows he can’t get the ball, he automatically puts a body on an opponent to take them out of the contest. Just a very clever player and I love that beautiful kicking action he has.

  46. What more were you wanting to see exactly? He provided the forward pressure we were lacking with 6 tackles and kicked an opportunist goal. It would’ve been two goals if not for an incorrect overturn on video review. We are a more dangerous side with Garlett in the forwardline.
    2 points
  47. That goal review when CP was close to the post and then JG kicked it off the ground through the goals. The ump called it a goal but wanted a review to see if the ball had hit the post earlier. I cannot for the life of me see how the video review showed that it contacted the post and certainly not enough to overrule the original call.

  49. Lewis is the most over rated player on the list. Sure he's got a history - but that's in the poos and wees. He is an exemplary pointer and we cleared Jack Watts to make room for that skill. He can make at least one glaring, goal conceding stuff-up per game and we dropped Bernie Vince to allow him room for that statistic. Maybe we could drop Jones and Viney for his captaincy skills?
