The AFL should be getting some heat.  In the NFL, every stadium has medical imaging, and some teams bring their own.  X-Ray and ultrasound mainly. With ultrasound, a doctor can pick up internal bleeding with 90% accuracy and punctured lungs with 97-100% accuracy.  And a portable x-ray would find broken ribs in 2 minutes.

If any good should come of Tracc’s incident it should be that the AFL makes it into the 21st century. They have enough money to make sure of players welfare.

Yes, when Public Health is fully & appropriately funded.  Next it will be a cry for one of these machines at every footy ground in Australia. Let's get real !!!

Trac is in good hands (thank heavens) and the Epworth is only a short drive from the MCG. We do have a health system.

Still no excuse for sending him back on

See i am in 2 minds about this.

Dr Peter Brukner a person with medical training was not overly critical of the decision of him going back on, He said the diagnosis is hard to make initially and praised us for making the call when it seemingly got worse.

But I a person with no medical training sent a msg to a friend saying "I think Trac is dead" as he was slowly making his way off the field. You could tell he was in a bad way.

The AFL can afford it, and club doctors should have better information when deciding if players can go back onto the field.  It’s unfair on club doctors to poke and prod to make a decision.

Let’s look at it another way.  Trac got a knee in the ribs and it was just a bruise.  Do you seriously think he can get to the Epworth, get a scan, and be back on the ground in the second qtr.  Let’s get real!!  Trac mentioned he had his scan at 8-9pm that night.

But the club doctors are sports doctors and not radiologists. They rely on the radiologists doing the scans to report on what they find, and so unless the AFL is able to also have a panel full of specialists at every game waiting by the machines there isn't much point.

Another thing I'd like to add is that the majority of diagnosis are made based on how the patient is feeling supported by MRI's, ultrasounds etc to try and identify what is happening inside the body. In many cases the problems do not show up on the scans and are easily overlooked unless the person knows what they are looking for. As an example Mason Cox had a lacerated spleen which the radiologist did not pick up on during scans the day after his injury. They only picked up on it 4 days later when he presented to his doctor with symptoms consistent with a lacerated spleen and internal bleeding.

Whether or not we are playing finals, we don’t need players suspended for round 1 (or round zero; maybe the AFL will, in their infinite wisdom, call it round munis 1. 🙄).   Remember Kozzie missed round 0 this year, and we surely and sorely missed him.

I read the news that Trac is out for the season to mean he is not expected to be available for home amd away matches. Let’s see how he goes over the coming weeks and if he returns to light duties in the rebah group in the next 3 - 4 weeks or is out for longer. In any case it’s a positive that he didn't have his spleen removed and is out of intensive care.

Do we know whether he did or didn’t have his spleen removed. See below.

This should shut up the smart alec, uninformed commentators in the media.

petracca-describes-traumatic-internal-injuries

It took two lots of scans to detect anything more than two cracked ribs.

"I don’t think we all understood the severity of it, to be honest. I think we got an initial scan around 8pm (or) 9pm. The first scan showed two cracked ribs, and then just a little bit of bleeding around the lung,” Petracca told Nova radio station.

“I don’t know what happened. I think 15 minutes later one of the doctors was just checking my blood levels and noticed my haemoglobin was dropping severely, and my blood levels were dropping. So I [had] another scan, and that’s when they noticed on the next scan I had four cracked ribs, a grade-five spleen [laceration] and a punctured lung, too".

“It went from being a four out of 10, to basically a 10 out of 10 – equivalent to a car accident. It seemed pretty full on. I had to go straight into surgery at 2am; open surgery. I wasn’t under anaesthetic because my blood levels were so low.”

There is no way anyone could have known the extent of the injury at the ground so any criticism of our doctors for letting him play on is completely unfounded.

Can't see it happening but Whately, Purple et all owe our doctors an apology.

Unimaginable what Petracca has gone through especially having surgery without anesthetic albeit being 'gassed up'.  A very brave and tough person.

May soon elevate him to 'Hero' status in my eyes.

“I had to go straight into surgery at 2am; open surgery. I wasn’t under anaesthetic because my blood levels were so low.”

This sounds very strange and there are surely some missing pieces. I have never seen (or done)  open abdominal surgery without anaesthesia even in dire emergencies.  If he actually had “open surgery” on his abdomen he will be pushing to get ready for the start of 2025.

Club doctors need to make clinical decisions, which involves the history of and from the patient, and hands on touch, feel, listen. There is always patient input in this.  And diagnoses are always subject to periodical review.  Some may be adept at “bedside ultrasound” but this is very operator dependent and in this case wouldn’t have been of much help - note that the first CT some 4 hours post injury failed to show his splenic injury.

As far as radiological assessment of scans is concerned, this can be achieved almost instantaneously remotely.  This happens almost everywhere all the time : reports come from the UK (or USA or other English speaking first world health system countries) overnight  when our radiologists are sound asleep, and vice versa.
But the technology of achieving a quality scan depends on good well maintained equipment, and a competent radiographer who would need to be immediately available on site.  Unlikely to be achievable at every AFL ground for every game.  It is not as if there is a glut of radiographers who would only rarely be used for a CT scan.

Especially as they are too tight assed to spend a few hundred bucks on goal line technology.

He said needs various vaccinations.  I'm not an MBBS/the right sort of doctor but guidelines after spleenectomy/embolisation/<50% perfused spleen say that a bunch of new vaccinations are needed (meningococcal, pneumococcal, Haemophilus influenzae).   The length of recovery time also suggests a pretty bad injury.

But this is all speculation.

I hope he's doing okay mentally.  It's going to be hard going from being super active to not doing much at all.  Once he's feeling better physically, he's going to struggle if he relies on movement to help his mental health.

Our docs didn't have high-tech scanning equipment but even the hospital which did have them got it wrong initially.

Why should you in your hotel room know better?  Does your daughter often diagnose without seeing the patient?  Of course it looked very bad, but we've seen that sort of thing before, and while the player may not end up playing out the game, they don't often end up in ICU.

I foolishly though the report about what initially happened at the hospital would have quietened the keyboard doctors on here. Seems I was wrong.

Yes I have, but I'll be blowed if I can understand why that would be relevant in a case like this.

Tele-heath doc:  How are you feeling - you look in pain. What are your symptoms?"

Patient:  It hurts a lot down there.

Tele-healthh doc: I'll just hook you up to my combined virtual x-ray, MRI and UltraSound machine and diagnose you then. Hang on a jiffy....

With broken ribs and a punched lung I double he will do anything this side of October. Those injuries don't heal fast not to mention his ruptured Spleen.

I am more concerned with Tracc's comments that he has been spooked by this and couldn't watch any games over the weekend. etc.

The body will likely heal but the mental scares could well end up being worse.

All those who think the club is beyond reproach on this issue should read the latest. His family is far from happy with how this was handled.

I complained to the club. Today they contacted me and simply said how this was handled will not happen again. There was no effort to try and justify what happened.  I am happy that they did not try to justify the decisions that were taken.

Reports that our best player, our only Norm Smith Medalist, future captain and his family,  are not happy with the club.
Yet the club remains silent. No statement, nothing.

They must be busy.

Just because the family (is reported to be) not happy, does not mean it was handled badly.

Trac sounds like a diva

Trac posted on his social media and discussed in one of the recent interviews he did that the doctors at MFC did what they could and he doesn't blame them.  Whether his family agree with Trac's public statements or not is another thing, but Trac has certainly not been a diva about almost dying.

So many posters (not saying you, necessarily, adonski, but certainly plenty in this thread and elsewhere after our losses) on here are warped in the head - requiring players to be hard as nails, spouting all sorts of toxic ideals... then when Trac almost dies because of trying to tough things out, baying for the blood of the club alongside the rest of the media.

No, I'm not.  I was just saying that it does not logically follow that just because a parent (allegedly) believes something, that that something is true.    Doesn't require an advanced degree in logic to see that.

Care to share with us exactly word for word what the club said and the position of who it was.  Not that I don't trust you OD, but you do have a reputation for finding the downside in almost anything.  (Also 'not denied', could just mean "I'm not bothered/instructed to not argue with people who contact the club".)

Look, for all I know, it was not handled well. But the evidence that the hospital with all its equipment got it wrong initially, tends to indicate to me that the MFC quacks were not particularly negligent.

I am hopeful that you don't think I made it up to suit my view! On the Tuesday morning I sent the club an email criticising the decision to send the player back on. Today they rang me. Believe it or not. As for negatives I have never been an accept every decision the club makes person. They make errors like everyone. I remember being called negative about the Weid. I was right.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started.
