POSTGAME: Rd 04 vs Adelaide

Recommended Posts

Lost inside 50’s by 6, lost centre clearances by 5.

Combined with sitting back in the last quarter I’d imagine it’s centre clearance that is the major weakness.

Id love to see our season numbers with Gawn vs with JVR. Now that ruck has become basketball jump balls Gawn is nullified as a tap ruck and he’s slow on the deck.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Riv get a couple of cracks, can swap in with Sparrow for a couple a game.

The other one I’d love to see is Chandler, now that he’s playing with faster hands, stronger tackling and more strength over the ball.

Give him Kossie’s 1 a quarter.

It was a classic young/lesser umpires on the road game where the free kick count is always going to skew to the home side.

No it wasnt.

Meredith, Williamson and Fleer are very senior experienced umpires.

Yikes, didn’t know Meredith was out there. Those other 2 are experienced. Not sure they’re much good. Although Williamson is usually steady.

I stand by that we weren’t as badly impacted as the stats say.

Win wasn’t flattering, but to come away 4-1 with 2 wins in Adelaide is outstanding.

I said I would be happy to be 3-2 after this round so this is a great position to be in.

Win next week heading into the bye and the lids off.

So far I think outside the Port game we”ve been favourites.

The lid comes off if we beat Carlton off a 5 day break post geelong at the G.

I've started watching on mute this year also, and I find it a lot less stressful. The ideal TV option would be just crowd noise with no commentary.

If you have the SEN app, they have a feature where you can sync their commentary to the video broadcast and even adjust the delay manually if it's not correct. Connect your phone to a Bluetooth speaker and you have Channel 7 vision with synchronised SEN commentary. Not a single wowee to cringe at all game. It's life changing.

BT banging on about players stuck on the bench in the last ten minutes was pure dribble.

There's 6 people on the commentary team and the commentary is still not worth hearing unless it's an update on an injury.

Thanks for the SEN tip. Will definitely try it.

At a vending machine at Adelaide airport this morning and I hear a big boomin’ voice coming from behind… “Well, hello! How’s my Demon Lady, this morning?” (Clearly he’d forgotten my name 😁) It was Chocco and he was chock-full of chuffiness 😅 He said, “How good was that win, eh?!” I said, “We’re taking eight points back to Melbz so yeah, it was real good!” He then got in the boarding queue, grinning like a Cheshire cat. In stark contrast, I saw Laurie and Schache further back in the queue. They both nodded and waved but without a smile in sight. They looked miserable, but that might just be coz they realised they were on the same flight as me. 🤭

These five day breaks suck.

We were clearly running out of juice last night so it has an impact.

I'm wondering how many Carlton or Cwood get.

I don't think so. The real stat is how damaging are the clearances that we win, versus the ones the opposition win.

When we win a centre clearance it's almost always resulting in an inside 50. No so much our opponents. We also score very highly for centre clearances.

I am not so fussed about pure numbers, it's about outcomes and I think we are just as happy to attack from half back after losing a centre clearance, as we are to attack from a centre clearance itself.

It's the around the ground contested stuff that really matters.

Not even a mention.

Then you have Whately on the SEN broadcast literally barracking and booing against the Rivers non-HTB decision.  Did he say a word with the Rivers push in the back?  Bet he didn't.  Weak as [censored] Whately.

The entire AFL is such an inbred incestuous circus.  Hard to believe but it's even worse during gather round where there's home town barracking now from supposedly impartial broadcasters.  BT / Chanel 7 & FOX (Kingy in particular) included.  Kingy couldn't help himself after the win... still highlighting that in his view we are under achievers if we don't win another flag.  Couldn't just speak about the great win and had to drag that out lol.

Pathetic the lot of em.  No wonder Carey bags the [censored] out of them.  Anyone who speaks their mind doesn't last long as a commentator on any stations / tv shows.  Jordan Lewis & Richo examples of that.

Chanel 7 also now has the blandest special comments ppl going.  Talk about a snooze fest.  Selwood...bah!!

And yet we still engage with it 😎

thought our skills were a bit down last night but not our endeavour.

then i realised it was our 3rd game in just 11 days with 2 being interstate.

i'll take that any day, and the 3 wins.

Possibly one of the worst umpired games I have seen in a Dees game in a long time. All my non-Dees work colleagues this morning agreed that we were absolutely robbed.

Happy to take away the W from both games particularly in the 2nd one off a 5 day break. We looked flat at times but rallied when the game needed to be put to bed.

Fox was bearable at one point but not once they start bringing the likes of Kingy into game day coverage.

He should be left to First Crack and other specialist programes where his inane over analysis can be taken or left by choice and his bias against the Demons avoided.

SEN i stopped listening to once Hutchy took over and muzzled or fired any who spoke their mind a little freely (KB, The Ox, Finey).

Gerard 'The Crow' Whately call (snippet) on the Rivers non-holding the ball decision i accidently came across while surfing FB.

There's very few callers that are unbiased or a bearable listen.

Anthony Hudson & Richo are still passable on 3AW but then you've got grumpy Tony Shaw to put up with!  I guess no one's perfect

As much as i love Max and i felt he played a VG game, will he ever learn to aim for the right hand post from 30 odd out?

His kicking does my head in.

Last week when kicking for goal after the siren he was laser focused on running in a straight line and kicking in a straight line.

He never does that when kicking normally. Its so freaking basic, Tracc is guilty of that as well

Fritsch seems to be the only one to practice that

I doubt we are trying to change our approach that much from last year.

We are kicking a fractionally more centrally through centre half forward and less to the pocket inside attacking 50, which reduces the chances of re-entry

I think our forward pressure has been down due to Ben Brown and Petty coming into the forward line.

We have lost centre clearance by -5 in the last two games. Clarry is a liability in the centre bounce at the moment due to injury.

The inside 50 count was also lost against Port in part due to our accuracy (no repeat entries after a goal). We also kicked well to outperform expected score against Hawthorn and Bulldogs.

We'll have to agree to disagree as I think the change in method is quite radical.

Interestingly though, in his presser Goody said we need to improve and the only star he cited as example of why is inside 50s - he said we have lost that count a few times this year and we aren’t going to keep winning if we keep losing on the inside 50 count.

In other words, he thinks we need to be winning more contest (I agree) and turning the ball over earlier (ideally in our forward half). But we're still really hard to transition the ball against. And when we're on, you can't get in behind us, because we're setting up our defence so deep and far less aggressive than we have in previous years.

It seemed to me that we lacked numbers at contest. when the ball hit the ground no one seemed to be there

Were we waiting for them to turn it over and thus conserving energy?

Were players TOG drastically different tonight?

TOG for our mids have been much lower this year than previous years. Oliver and Viney tend to play south of 80% now, whereas usually they both play north of 80%.

I didn't notice the lack of numbers at the contest, but I think we were definitely playing an energy conserving system, which aside from the physical contest side of the game, is heightened, I think, by sitting our defence deeper.

What is interesting is that we've lost ground ball gets consistently, which used to be a key indicator of success for us. If we weren't winning ground ball, we'd struggle. I think this speaks to the defensive set up that sags back. If we don't win clean clearance, we are so aggressive from stoppage that the opposition gets clean take aways back the other way. We rely on the inside sliders off half back to push up and impact that first post clearance possession, which enables our mids to get back into the contest.

Earlier this year many mentions occured about how good our midfield were, but it seemed we often lost the clearance.

I LOVE seeing Max belt the suitcase out of the ball forward. He is doing it pretty often lately. I love seeing Jake and Big Stevie punching high balls when they cant mark and ANB, Sparrow tapping outside the congestion when possesion equals a ballup. We generally do it to advantage. It seems to me a new tactic.

Whilst centre clearance quality is as important as pure numbers I think you have to aim to break even in the centre. It’s too valuable a scoring asset as well as a momentum reset / builder.

We should aim to keep our defensive pressure and attacking explosion whilst getting back to 50:50. 12-7 to this Adelaide midfield, that’s not good.

I agree and I certainly think we aim to break even in all stats, but win the contested ball and defensive efforts.

How good seeing Lever dominate last night. You could feel the saltiness from the crows fans

I thought Lever was very influential last night. So important for us

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs.
