Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Have no idea if Petty is up to speed or not.

Have to assume he is if we decide to bring him in.

Can't say I'd share that view given his recent outings/form.

Id really like him to get a good solid run in the magoos.

I agree. At least one game.  Let’s hope Casey don’t have yet another bye 🙄

We have one, maybe two more byes (if Casey finish top six we get a bye the week of the VFL pre finals wild card round)

Look I'm the "beaten up" culprit and I'm guilty of generalising Jack Viney to the entire team. Jack has been monumental across the period Clarrie has been missing and he just looked justifiably spent at the end of the Adelaide game.

I think we need to persist with the attacking move of Petracca forward and that places more load on Jack, although happily this has been mitigated by Angus really stepping up in the midfield - some pretty good depth there, and Kossie playing higher.

I do fear that Richmond's midfield might get a hold of us this week and will be glad to see Clarrie back and Jack get a break when it's possible.

Other better judges think I'm jumping at shadows, let's hope so. "Happy to be wrong" 😀

If the MC's thinking is '4th' then that thinking can permeate through to the players

We can drop 2 games and still finish 4th but we also may not want to put pressure on ourselves this far out

Beat Richmond and the rest of it is on our terms (to a large degree)

We could get to 3rd but 2nd would require a lot to happen in our favour including us winning out

When is it that Petty forward has " "worked"?

It's been tried and has  been ok but no way a "lock",yet down back over at least 2 seasons he's been part of a serious backline glue.

Hibberd in would be an idea as well.

They are running out of room down back which is about the only argument for Petty forward

When he was used as a defensive fwd  on Tom McCartin and we beat Sydney.

Correct and if fully fit might be brought in to play that role on Balta this week.

Ideally he might need a run at Casey though.  Potentially one week (or more?) too early for Harry.

That might be needed Bubs but who knows.  Certainly not me lol.

Fingers crossed though as you wouldn't want Petty having the same result as he did last time he came straight back In without any Casey lead in.

Pig's history on dusty and form last week is too good to ignore.

If Petty is fit I can't see him being left out and it will be in his defensive role. My read is they prefer the Gawn/Grundy ruck/forward combo in finals with BBB and TMac as fall back options.

Grundy will play another at Casey as planned, will come in to give Max a rest at some point and then we'll trial them together again just before September.

Tomlinson is purely a backup for May, Lever and Petty.

Based on that I'd guess

Out; Brown, Tomlinson, Woey

In; Petty, Hibberd, Smith

Sub; Harmes

I don't think anybody underestimates Jack Vineythese days - he has been immense in covering for Clarrie's absence.

But I think there are still some to fail to recognise Angus' contributions particularly over this period.  He has been pivotal.

And regarding Max / Brundy - I wonder if, provided we lock in 4th place by beating the Tigers, would we consider "managing" Max in the North and Hawthorn games, leaving Brundy as the main ruck?    I remain too be convinced that either should be regarded as a key forward - would love to be proven wrong by the way.,

Think I'd have Woey or Tomo as sub way before Harmes. Harmes is having a annus horribilis! Can't see him on the list next year.

We’re getting the job done without Oliver, Fritsch, McDonald and Petty.
Pressure for spots all over the ground have appeared due to these guys being injured.

I’d love to be top 2 but it ain’t gonna happen.
We’ve exposed Rivers and more of Jordon to the midfield. Woey is an instant valuable role player.
Melky is a clutch king.
Joel Smith can quite frankly play anywhere and impact play.

We get back to full strength before finals, I think we feel relatively confident of our capabilities and to handle the pressure of finals footy.

So I anticipate another tight game and a couple of goals win.

We are definitely building some great depth and flexibility in many ways accellerated by the Petty, Fritsch & Oliver injuries and to a lesser extent the limitations of Brown and McDonald.

Melksham's opportunities in Fritsch's role has lead to good outcomes and a definite confidence boost.

Viney has had a career best season.

We've seen the value of Smith forward and as the sub.

JVR has played ~15 games, mostly held his own and will be better placed to make an impact in September than he would be if he'd only played a handful.

JJ, Sparrow & Rivers have been exposed to significant midfield minutes they otherwise wouldn't have with Oliver in the team and Tracc not needed forward.

Plus we've got Hibberd to come back in, potentially Gus relocating to the half back line (his best position IMV), a top 10 ruckman in the twos & proven capable key position backups in McDonald and Tomlinson.

Whilst clearly a plan off the back of last year, the 'squad' based approach was further enforced by injuy, and there is no doubt it has delivered significant benefits.

60k for a non ANZAC eve/non final wouldn’t be a bad result considering we’ve only seen that three times in our history with the tigers….

• 76k - Rnd 22, 1998 (Dees home game)

• 62k - Rnd 14, 2011 (Dees away game)

• 60k - Rnd 15, 2006 (Dees home game)

surprising isn’t it!!

and just in case anyone was wondering….yes, we won all of those games above 💙❤️

Remember the 98 game both had to win to make the 8, we were in good form and we’re just to good. We ended the round 4th on the ladder and steamrolled the eventual premiers Adelaide in the first final the following week

We were on that day. I'd lost a junior footy grand final in Camberwell but was more keen on what was happening at the G.

That side has a special place.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
