The more I've thought about this, the more I've convinced myself we should be all in for Reid. Having him develop under Gawn, Viney, Oliver, Petracca would hopefully mean he maximises his potential. He could rotate forward and midfield with Petracca as Trac winds down. It's a seriously exciting and unique prospect.

To get him, we'd need to do a few trades. Ultimately we'd have turned Jackson into Reid at the end of it. 

1. Gold Coast have 3 top prospects they can bid on and need points to do so. They'll likely trade away pick 5 to get more points. We trade 15 and second rounders. That nets them approx 800 more points. Unless another club trumps us, Gold Coast do this without blinking. We then hold 4+5.

2. We then trade 4+5 for 1 + pocket change. We get Reid. West Coast get local boy Curtain and another young talent with pick 5. It's a win win.

3. Profit.

Sorry dd36 thanks for posting it, I wasn’t trying to have a go at you or the media.  I was just on the Grundy page and just amazed so many people actually get angry with what people in the media say.

I can't see North getting a PP if they can pre-list Sanders (which I think will happen) and given the compromises with the GC NGA prospects,  I think the secret herbs and spices compensation pick for losing McKay might be more like end of first round rather than directly after their first pick.   

I wouldn't be looking to previous AFL decisions as a precedent - AFL HQ have never been consistent in how they decide these things.

First  to add Sanders to their Next Gen Academy late - I think there is a case for this because AFAIK he has been involved with them for a number of years and has only recently officially established his Aboriginality.

Second, to bypass the updated rule that (apart from NSW and Qld teams) you can only bid on Academy players selected after pick 40 - I actually think that rule is too restrictive if you have invested long term in the player, maybe fairer would be no points discount up to pick 40. But nevertheless it's the rule and North are trying to bypass it.

FWIW, I think they'll get their way. Sanders genuinely said on Gettable he was happy to go to North, he's very god friends with Harry Sheezel and there's talk that North will select McKercher, also from Tasmania like Sanders.

North need KPs, even more so if McKay leaves. Maybe they're hoping that delivers pick 3 and they can take Curtain there.  That would pose a risk and problems for any trade of our Freo pick to WC for pick 1 because they wouldn't get Curtain.

If they got Sandwrs and the pick 3 as compo for McKay then that ruins any plan for us to trade up for pick 1. West coast will only trade down to pick 4 if they can get the local boy Curtain, who happens to be best KPD. If North get pick 3 compo, they’d then have picks 2 and 3, and would take Curtain as a tall with one of those picks as they’ve been handed a gun mid in Sanders.

Basically getting pick 1 and therefore Harley Reid is only possible for us if North don’t get pick 3 compo for McKay leaving. Fingers crossed the AFL don’t butcher the amount of compo given for a 65 game 26 year old who has  achieved nothing. At this rate would could’ve gotten rid of Oscar McDonald or Joel Smith for first round compo haha

It would be a sham if they were to end up with both pick 3 and Sanders 

More than happy for them to receive one to assist them (Dees fans can’t talk when it comes to receiving priority picks) but to receive both would be overkill in an already heavily compromised draft

My sense is the AFL understand the ire that it would create and will only give them one of the two - i.e. if the McKay trade is in band 1 and they receive pick 3, they won’t get access to Sanders, but if it’s an end of first round pick instead they would get access to him

I don't think North is as bad as what they are playing. They have some pretty handy kids to build a team around in Larkey, Xerri, Sheezel, Davies-Uniacke, Harvey, Simpkin, Zurhaar and Wardlaw. Plus arguably the greatest coach ever, they'll come good soon enough.

Further to the Kangaroos compromising our draft hand discussion, one factor that hasn't been talked about much is that the roos have the right to match a bid for him due to his status as a RFA.

Given logue has done his ACL, they are really short on Key defenders on their list.

If they choose to not match a bid in favour of a high draft pick, they are essentially writing off the next few years waiting for junior development to come through while Corr and Young man the backline. They are in for a world of further short term pain.

Why should the AFL encourage such stupid list management decisions.

At least match the bid and force a trade like the mechanism is designed for.

I am in favour of giving North Melbourne a decent assistance package. With free agency, it makes it almost impossible for cellar dwellers to climb out of a death spiral.

That said, I don’t like very early priority picks. IMO the fairest way to give an assistance package without a significant impact on one or two clubs is the following:

• Points which can be swapped with Gold Coast for their first pick to enable the Suns to take their 3 academy players.
• Points to take Ryley Sanders (I am not in favour of changing the draft rules to allow pre-listing, but this has the same impact)
• Ben McKay compensation at the end of the first round. They can't allow a high salary contract to be padded out later like they did with Joe Daniher.
• A priority pick after WCE’s 2023 second round pick
• Priority pick #11 for 2024

This gives a decent package but the impact is spread equally on the competition and does not reshuffle the first round. This would also give slight assistance to GCS, which is also needed for the good of the competition.

This means North Melbourne will hold:

2023: #2, #5 (from GCS), #17 (from Port last year), #19 (compensation for Ben McKay), #21 (priority pick), #40, #54 & #60. Plus Ryley Sanders.

2024: R1, #11, R2, R3 & R4

As an aside, I would actually give WCE similar priority picks (i.e. start of second round this year and 2024 first round before the finalists) and maybe some points (not enough to satisfy GCS) so they can swap for picks used for other father/son academy picks.

Watching the highlights of Harley Reid, the way he plays reminds me of Hawthorn's Jai Newcombe. He looks very powerful, skilful and has decent pace without being really quick. I have not seen him take strong overhead marks like Petracca did in his draft year. At 185cm, he will be short for a modern day inside midfielder.

I would have thought the same but I heard Sam Edmund on the radio earlier this week and while all these footy "journalists" have to make big calls to stay relevant - it seemed to me he had been fed information from a good source and was preparing the ground for this to happen.

I don't like it, but I just get the sense it's going to happen - they'll have pick 2, pick 3 (McKay) and then have access to Sanders separately.

If Grundy ends up going and we ship Tommo & Harmes off as well, that'll likely land us further 2nd and 3rd round picks. Throw in a F1 + these picks instead of Pick 5 could look something like.

 

A. Pick 15, 23 , 34 << Pick 5 from GCS (points value defecit of ~800)

B. 2x2nd rounders , 1 x 3rd rounders for Grundy, Harmes, Tommo

C. Pick 4, 2x2nd rounders, F1 for Pick 1 from WC (Points value deficit of ~1500)

We then take Pick 1 and 5 to the draft, and the points from the remaining picks.

I’ve been thinking about this. I agree that if Kangas get band 1 compo, that’s a complication for a pick 1 deal for us.

I’d wonder if we would include North and make it something of a mega deal to work in a scenario where they get some assets (which may include a key back replacement for McKay - like Tomlinson) whilst also selecting players not named Curtin.

There’s a deal there to make it worth everyone’s while in this scenario, Curtin would then only need to make it past the Hawks (at this point, one of Watson, Duursma or Caddy would likely be available for Hawks).
