Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

I think what we do know is that Jason Taylor and co are very prepared to go all in to get the player they want - Apparently offering 3 first round picks for Humfrey last year.  Haven't watched him closely this year but he has had enormous impact in the games I have seen for a first year player.  The fact that we have so much currency gives us far greater chance at getting the player/s JT want - whether that be Reid or others.

I’m cautious too. Reid is physically much more developed than many he’s playing with and against, give it a few years and he might fall back to being a very good player rather than the generational talent being talked about

He dominated against other underage draft prospects sure, but he's also playing against men in the VFL now. Go back a page or two and watch the clip of him playing for the Carlton VFL team. He was bumping, tackling, fending off, and taking down mature men with little effort. He's clearly got the competitive nature, loves physicality, has power and pace etc. He's not just a man child bullying kids, he's already bullying men too despite not being 18 yet. He's a seriously exciting prospect, closest player we've seen to Dusty, but more competent inside and less miraculous with goal snaps. If he's developed properly, he's the next Dusty; a dominant mid-forward.

Why does everyone believe we will have pick 15? It's going to be pick 18.

Have faith, people!!

Draft order is based off position at the conclusion of the home and away season, not post finals. We're not finishing first on the ladder this season. We'd need Pies and Port to lose the next 4-5 games n a row and we'd need to win all 5. Chances of that happening are next to zero. We could still win the flag though!

The more I've thought about this, the more I've convinced myself we should be all in for Reid. Having him develop under Gawn, Viney, Oliver, Petracca would hopefully mean he maximises his potential. He could rotate forward and midfield with Petracca as Trac winds down. It's a seriously exciting and unique prospect.

To get him, we'd need to do a few trades. Ultimately we'd have turned Jackson into Reid at the end of it.

1. Gold Coast have 3 top prospects they can bid on and need points to do so. They'll likely trade away pick 5 to get more points. We trade 15 and second rounders. That nets them approx 800 more points. Unless another club trumps us, Gold Coast do this without blinking. We then hold 4+5.

2. We then trade 4+5 for 1 + pocket change. We get Reid. West Coast get local boy Curtain and another young talent with pick 5. It's a win win.

3. Profit.

Get it done Dees!

I can’t see us getting the Suns pick for that. Other teams are better placed than us I think. The dogs have two first round picks and a father/son that will be around their picks. By trading uk they get a top 6 pick and their F/S.
I do like the thinking though as I think we need a Key defender so if we do the deal to get Reid we need to keep a decent pick for this year as well.
If the Suns lose Flanders this year then they may not need as much points for their academy players and may be interested in a future pick as part of the deal.

That is incorrect.  It's based on finishing order at the completion of finals

Either trade up for 1 or stick with 4 and a combo of other selections. Maybe use 16 and 23 to get a better pick. Can't see us trading for 2 or 3

The prospect of using 4 on the tall WA lad might just be the leverage for prizing out pick 1

Underagers apply to play in the VFL and then get assigned a team for a match if it's approved. Most don't get the chance, the high profile draftees often get a few cracks at it. Be keen to see how Reid goes and if he plays a different position yet again.

Kids who win their own footy and possess a combination of size + explosive athleticism rarely miss at the top end of the draft (barring injury). JT seems to know this and clearly favours players with these characteristics - we only need to look at our attempt to draft Bailey Humprey last year. The prospects who never live up to their high draft position almost never fit this profile. I thought LDU was going to be the exception to the rule given how his career started, but he's now a jet.

In addition, Reid has shown he can play forward, midfield and back to a high level, meaning he should be able to contribute right away, even if he isn't a walk up starter in the middle (important given our premiership window is now).

If we have the draft capital to move up, and WC have an appetite to trade down, this is an absolute no brainer.

Happy to sell the farm to get this kid if WC are willing to trade with us

As others have pointed out this might be the only draft for years to come that we’re going to have access to elite talent - not to mention one that is being spoken about as the best draft prospect in years

If we pull it off it could be the move that extends our premiership window beyond the next three to five years - particularly if Reid lives up to the hype and becomes a 10+ year player for us

Another factor is our fellow competitors - all of Collingwood (Daicos), Brisbane (Ashcroft) and Port (JHF as well as Rozee and Butters) have drafted elite young talent that are not only having huge impact now, but will keep their teams at the pointy end for years to come

Yes every draftee is a risk, but if JT thinks he’s worth giving up our trade hand for then I’m am all aboard the Reid train

MFC can definitely pick up Reid if the Eagles want to recruit local players in the ND.

But we cannot give them our top three  picks. Thats ridiculous.

Give them 4, 23  and a quality fringe player  ie. JJ

My concern is we need to guarantee WCE can get Curtain if thats who they want. Pick 4 doesn't do that. Esp with Haw with Frost coming to end, DGB not really working so far and Sicilly not big KP size. Therefore can we get 2 off North. Pick 2 would be a lot more tempting for WCE than 4 as it grantees they get there man.

could we swap 4 15 23 to North for 2 & 17

then swap 2 & 17 to WCE for pick 1

or something similar???

Agree that North may be the wild card in this and that securing pick 2 via a trade could all but guarantee us a trade with WC for pick 1

A lot will depend on what compensation the AFL gives them for McKay leaving and whether they gain access to Sanders via a pre listing

They may be willing to trade down for pick 4 (and potentially the Suns pick if we were to make that trade) pending their compensation

Right now it’s line ball whether Curtin would make it to pick 4 given both North and Hawks plethora of mids and lack of defenders, so there may be one or two other trades involved to get us to a position where we could trade for pick 1 (assuming JT and co are so inclined)

Yes but you are missing the fact that dogs still need points for the father son kid. So they can't just give up their picks for Suns as they will need to hold onto some points. That gives us an advantage.

No it's not. The Premier gets last pick, no matter where they finished at the end of the home and away and so on. The final order is post finals.

Or draft Curtin with our pick and trade him back to WA for Reid in 2 years. That way it only costs you one pick and we can trade up to get other good players.

Haha such a load or trash.

JVR himself has said multiple times how the year in the VFL was the best thing for his development.

If some junior coach or distant cousin wanted him to debut despite inconsistent VFL form and being a young kid then good luck to them.

He’s also playing now because he’s good and deserves games, without being a lock for selection. We aren’t gifting him games to keep him happy.

Points for father/son won’t be an issue. They already have 2nd round pick and can do a 3rd round pick swap with Suns and their future 3rd. Might pick up a lesser pick during trade period either or if they were stuck they could go go into points deficit for next year.

Really wouldn’t  be hard for them to trade with Suns and be able to have enough points for father/son.
