Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Hahahaha in what world is that going to get you pick 1?

The "3 firsts" thing has really deluded a few people. 2 of them are/will be closer to picks in the 20's.

Such coveted treasure that we'll keep them AND take Reid lol

Not too keen on Reid at the moment. Seems to prefer handball instead of dropping straight onto left side, for left foot kicks,  from what i have seen, and  otherwise, because of his pace, at this level he has the time to get around to straighten up back on his favoured RHS.

Draft picks are overrated, but top 5 draft picks are the cream of the crop.

If you're drafting the best inside/outside mid in the talent pool, you're getting an elite mid.

This isn't Barry Prendergast anymore. JT doesn't miss with mids.

If Reid is possible without giving up players that we want to keep, and only costs us draft picks, and JT rates him as highly as I'd suggest he does, just do the deal.

Oliver, Petracca, Viney, Reid, Brayshaw, Sparrow, Rivers. Trac and Reid playing forward and then with mid bursts. A huge opportunity to take another step and improve our elite talent.

The potential for Reid to Melbourne comes up in West Coast's write up:

Ideal draft prospects: If the Eagles hold Pick 1 and Harley Reid is genuinely happy to go anywhere in the country to start his AFL career, the Eagles have to take him. A versatile 185cm star Reid is considered a generational talent – one experienced recruiter told foxfooty.com.auearlier this year Reid was the best prospect they’d ever seen – and would be hard to pass up if there was a genuine chance you could get him. He’s drawn comparisons to Dustin Martin and plays with an infectious attitude, yet he can play across any line — and win games from any line — with his power at stoppages, overhead marking ability, penetrating kick and knack for hitting the scoreboard consistently. Regardless of Reid’s preference, the Eagles still face a significant call on whether to hold their first pick or trade it away to acquire multiple selections and help accelerate their rebuild. Multiple clubs suggested to foxfooty.com.au last week the Eagles would be prepared to slide down the order if they could ‘guarantee’ they could still draft Daniel Curtin – WA’s top prospect who West Coast has strong interest in, according to rival clubs. For example, a deal with Melbourne (who currently have Pick 4, via Fremantle, plus 15 and 23) could work. The fact there’s a decent WA-based crop in this year’s draft pool makes splitting Pick 1 a more enticing option for the Eagles.

Scully was the best they'd ever seen as well.

Martin went at pick 3...

Never believe the hype.

Maybe, but this is food for thought....

The number 1 pick is not always the best in the year and I would say none of these are generational talents.

Hodge for leadership maybe.

This kid would be the cornerstone of our next flag assault after the Oliver, Viney, Petracca et al are going to be todays Dangerfields of that period.

Not only could you build the next assault around this kid, you can plug him the best 23 next year and expect him to be a dominant player.

Too good of a chance to pass this up - should we be able to engineer a trade.

I’m cautious too. Reid is physically much more developed than many he’s playing with and against, give it a few years and he might fall back to being a very good player rather than the generational talent being talked about

At this stage I would rather keep the picks, HOWEVER,  many recruiters, who do this for a living, are saying this is the best kid that they have ever seen in the draft.

So, if they are saying this kid is better than Tracc, N. Daicos, Ashcroft, Horne- Francis etc, how do you not take him if you have the chance?

Interesting times to come after the season ends.

The other thing is the top end kids have been recognised from a long way out from their draft year, so they have been in elite programs for many years (rep/state/national teams/vfl)

He’s been influential at VFL level already so he can cope with the bigger bodies and speed without a problem.

Theres probably 4-5 blokes in the 23 he could replace tomorrow so on immediate impact it’s worth it alone, without even talking 3,4 and 5 years down the track.

Wonder if West Coast are also interested in Mitch Edwards the best of the rucks. Rated between 10 and 15. Has ties with Freo academy but as we know they have no early draft picks!

WC need a quality ruck with Nic Nat done. You wouldn't think English wants to leave the Dogs to spend at least three years at the bottom of the ladder.

Trade with us and they can get Curtin and Edwards!

There is always a lot of media hype around potential number 1 picks, I wonder if real recruiters (the bosses) are this hyped.

If JT doesn’t share those unnamed recruiters’ view, I would think that it’s not even a possibility of happening.

We will have a good draft haul of picks and it will take a lot to influence JT to try and turn it into one particular player.

Agree with @rjay and @Redleg’s caution. Every second year someone is described as a generational talent. Are we talking about rabbits?

However, if those like JT actually believe this, then I’m all for going all in.

Winning the premiership AND getting the #1 draft pick would be a sublime conclusion to 2023.

The fact that we have a good few picks in a good draft shouldnt let us dismiss the absolute good fortune of being in the position to get Harley. Hardly any other club could tempt WC and they are all in tatters. I think we must must back JT but hell i hope we go for it!

You'd have James Bartel and 'a zippier Simon Black', as per the original product labels! I think Scully was limited a bit in ways nobody picked up pre-drafting, but Trengove was the real tragedy of both development failure and career-crippling injury.

But this thread keeps making me anxious because I simply cannot see the basis for burning multiple good draft picks just to turn pick ~4 into pick 1.

I'm just going to repeat over and over - I'd much rather a second bite at the cherry, such as pushing our pick 15 a bit higher by packaging it with later picks or pick swaps.

What about Petracca in his draft year? Were you thinking the same thing about him?

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
