MCL Injury to Max Gawn

Is there a higher chance of rerupture with non operative?

The question is whether non-operative management allows the ACL to intrinsically repair at all. In Australia, particularly Australian Rules Football states, it’s NEVER left to chance for footballers, they are ALWAYS surgically repaired. There are however some recent studies coming from OS, that suggest the ACL (if caught VERY early post-injury) can self-repair. We just don’t see that approach here, preferring (at this stage) to go for definitive repair with an allograft. Could change in the future, but I can tell you now that surgeons will resist it with all their might.

No-op management is a completely normal rehab option

Not for an AFL footballer, and never has been, at least since they started surgically reconstructing in the 80’s.

Let me throw a conspiracy theory out there. P.s. physio here.

To me the communication was weird From Goody and Alan Richardson.

Melbourne and Gawn MAY be considering an no-op management of his ACL (if ACL is suspected).

In that case, they would definitely be murky with the results. Bulldogs did this and lied about Giansiracusa and his ACL. They went with a no-op management. The only reason for the consideration would be Gawn's age and premiership window.

Whilst the Lachman's test was negative (95% accuracy), nothing was mentioned about an anterior draw. An anterior draw is an alternate test for an ACL, however it's less reliable.

A clinical guess can only assume its VERY unlikely he has done his ACL. Technically, Max is a 5% chance of an ACL. Enjoy your Saturday.

I’m sorry but the words and demeanour used by Goody and Richo in the media were not reflective of 95%. Something just doesn’t add up if that test wasn’t positive.

I read that even a partial tear of the ACL is also essentially a reconstruction.. I always thought it was only for full ruptures. Which is perhaps what we maybe dealing with here.

G’day @RyanD, nice to read another physio on here. I don’t know any clinician (physio or orthopaedic surg) who trusts or even uses Anterior drawer to diagnose ACL rupture. Similarly I don’t know anyone who uses non-anaesthetised pivot shift any more. Spot-on with the Lachman’s, but the only way they’re not surgically reconstructing Max’s ACL is if it’s a partial tear (in which case I agree they’d keep it quiet). Fingers crossed it’s a pure MCL, grade 1.

Any thoughts on your observations on the way Max was walking post game? Is there a chance it’s an MCL?

Almost certainly, based on the injury footage. I reckon it’s just a matter of what else and how bad. If it’s just MCL, the fact he was walking around well suggests not bad. Can anyone here can verify that his Lachman’s test was non-positive, I wonder? What’s the source?!

Apparently it was mentioned on the telecast but I sure didn’t hear it and the way Richardson and Goodwin sounded doesn’t fill me with confidence that it was said.

Richardson did say that the doctors are saying “he feels reasonable”.  I don’t know what that means.

Maxy is going to be out for a while, whatever the diagnosis.  I know the team is bigger than the individual.  But Maxy is huge.  HUGE.  This team needs to dig deep and somehow find a way to move forward.  Coaches, psychologists et al get onto this asap!  Us fans can keep grieving hard but the team can't afford to.

Makes me wonder if they mistook ‘not-definitive’ for ‘non-positive’. Whole different can of ugly worms. I’m bound to mention also, anxieties notwithstanding, that all this speculation is pointless. Hopefully it’s somehow therapeutic.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
