Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Definitely throw in our future 1st, maybe with a future 2nd or 3rd coming back. The problem is GC need points this year, and 400 points extra probably isn't enough for them to bite

Do GCS really need the points this draft or are they looking to trade 2023 pick 4 for future picks? That way they don't give up a high draft pick this year for points, they effectively transfer some of pick 4 to next year

If they trade out pick 4 they will need to make up 2000 odd points to match the bids or go into deficit next year.

Pick 4 is a very valuable asset though so would think they would want a bit more than just points. Future picks might be required as well.

Otherwise they can just use pick 4 to match and save themselves the trouble of trading out for no benefit and gifting a rival a top 5 pick.

His issue is speed off mark, that’s it!

But when the modern game's ball movement relies entirely on moving the ball quickly, you need explosive defenders to either cover the zone or an opponent on a lead.

If it's all about the team, we need to come to the realisation that Gawn is 32 at the end of the year. If Grundy hadn't carried a good chunk of the ruck load, Gawn wouldn't be as fresh for finals as he will be. He'd be even more banged up than he was last year and at (near enough) 32, he might not have too many years left in him and even less if he's carrying 90+% of the load. I'm not saying Grundy stays, but we sure as hell need someone who can give him a meaningful chop out, not just 5 minutes here and there. I wouldn't be settling for NQR ruckman like Ladhams, Hayes, Flynn and the eternally injured Preuss.

And Thus the reason we traded for him for Max to be the best he can be come Finals giving the Melbourne Football Club the best chance for winning another Grand Final. Who would you rather Rucking for Our Club in The Finals Max or Brodie. I'll take Max.

No stats support what the AFL site says there. Quite the opposite in fact!

See an extract from a previous post of mine regarding Ben Mckay stats:

"On 2023 form, he's lost 41% of one on one contests, which ranks him as the worst key defender in the league. Outright statistically worst tall defender in the league. He's averaged a bit under 2 intercept marks a game. For context, May has lost 21%, Lever 25%. Tomlinson surprisingly has been our strongest defender in the contest, and has only lost 12% of one on one contests and averages a bit over 1 intercept mark a game, including matches where he's been subbed off. Statistically, Ben McKay is work the Tomlinson, so if Ben McKay is worth a first round pick, then so is Tomlinson, and we all know neither are".

In no way is Ben McKay worth anything more than 2nd or 3rd round compensation. If a club is willing to pay him $800,000+, then they're run by a drugged up lunatic mid-[censored].

Thanks for the reality check LT!

I assume the AFL media will continue to pump up his tyres with these comments - right up until Free Agency Week/Month:

one of the League's best lockdown and intercept defenders across his 70-game and eight-year North Melbourne career,

so us nuffies (the footy fans) will keep reading what a great player he is and eventually assume he must be a gun and therefore deserving of a Round One compensation pick.

Yep, I have total faith in the AFL system!

Hi Dazz.  There is a bit going on and I'll be in a better position over the coming weeks to possibly announce some details.  I can tell you though that the Swans have, and are still having an enormous crack at Brodie, however, Brodie has almost totally decided it is back to SA for him due to changing family reasons.  This will probably leave Port as the most likely.  Lots of details yet to be worked out and tricky with both Clubs going deep.

I can also tell you that the Swans are heavily into Parish & Bailey Smith, I don't the media has caught up with their interest in Parish, but they're very keen.

It'll come as no surprise but it is almost certain that Bailey Smith will be elsewhere next year.

Stay well & Go Dees.

Interesting. I heard from someone at your mob (I think it's your mob anyway), that Grundy was Geelong or Sydney bound,  and Port were out of the picture, but I get that things change.

I think you missed the bit where I said I'm not advocating for Grundy to be retained. Rather, that we aren't left high and dry without a (DECENT) back-up ruckman or chop-out forward ruck. I don't think we can ask Max to do it alone next year with a 5-minute break here and there. Nor can we expect Verrall to be ready (but I think he has a future).

Where on earth did you think I said I wanted Grundy to be rucking in the finals ahead of Gawn? Seriously WTF?

No Max is the Number One at the MfC and Grundy came to make the T.E.A.M. better. It's all about the T.E.A.M. and us being better not about Grundy feeling better.

Maybe so, but that equally applies to Max. It’s not all about him, particularly in his twilight years.

Max’s dominant games later in the season had a lot to do with Grundy giving him the required time to properly recover from his niggles sustained earlier in the year. As he ages, Brodie’s presence will only prolong Max’s influence and career.

Max’s cliff will arrive suddenly, as his body will succumb much quicker than his heart due to the years of ‘questionable’ physicality that the umpires have forced him to illegally endure.

personally, i don't think max is any closer to retirement than grundy

this idea of succession is a pipedream or at very best a short lived improbability

I believe that Grundy will be at MFC next season.

Please explain why? Evidence appears  that it's more likely he will move and we will assist. We can't afford to have a $650,000 senior playing about the equivalent of 6/7 AFL games in 22 Rounds.

Brody has assisted in the ruck and at times has produced some helpful quarters and was stoic in Max's injury period.

I think Flynn or Fullarton or even Chol plus Verran later in the year May be suitable for chop out duties of games of 30%.  Importantly all can play and rest up forward. It's a tricky one as we could still get caught short if Maxy had a serious injury or suddenly slowed down ( hard to imagine).

Most of all these options would probably cost us somewhere between $200/250, 000 per year at this stage of their careers.

I do however acknowledge that Max and nearly all our list available are a much more fitter and formidable a combination than our team going into Finals compared to 2022.

Just about the 26 or so named  for the Round 24 it really is about all our best players in 2023 save for Harry Petty.snd Hibbo. It has the look of covering all bases and should a forward such as JVR or Tmac or say Melky, Smithy or Fritta and also Kossie or Trac have a day out our X factor could be explosive if we fire on all cylinders.

Also the backline has options like Joel Smith Tommo and another interceptor in Disco and KP potential in Tmac to plug a gap or quell a forward in full flight.

Just a thought on Maysie maybe he will be missing on Sunday  and Tommo is FB and Disco the third defender or Smithy maybe. If that happens then it's not very discrete of Our great FB to telegraph even a hint at this hour is it! Maybe my mind is too active. Time for some rest for the body and brain. Last Comment!

Time to flex our muscles on Sunday Dees and put the rest of the teams on notice and bring a little bit of our best.against a well performed opponent but albeit against teams around its 5/12 level.

Would WC take pick 4 and 5 for Allen and would we do it?

I would for sure. He’s next in line to be captain of his club, he’s ready made and he’s still young enough that you are looking at 7-8 years of top level service.

Can also play either end and be equally as good

Sorry DD the most important factor (in the next 4/5 matches) in Maxies career is that he has his mind and body clear snd uncluttered around the  playing side of things. That's what Goody has been trying to do all year snd given both champs their opportunities to impress in the ruck and up forward.

It is vitally important that Maxy feels great about himself and if it's at all needed we can call Brody up if the SC snd Coach believe our team will be better or need the pairing in a horses for courses selection option.

We all await the next few weeks with baited breath and huge excitement for the climax in late September and if our 14th Flag is part of that it will be one of our very fine triumphs, if not our finest probably since the 1948 replay which was a bonus in our expectations of those days.

I guess that is what Schache was recruited for.  Weed #2 IMO but that is whom we have.

Have I missed something?    IF May isn't 100% then it may be worth giving Disco a run (with Tommo and Lever)

 Mon

Two D/Ler's have posted that on Maysie' FBook page he has himself featured out at dinner tonight. My thoughts were if he was doubtful or even not playing at this stage it was a little indiscreet too post himself out publicly. Also with Disco and Tommo both named does this  back up my thoughts on Stephens availability?

Hopefully I have too much imagination but the naming of the 23 might reveal all!

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
