We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Long way to go until draft day but will be interesting to see the mock drafts evolve and see who could slide through to our pick.

Having said that, there seems to be a consensus top 5-6 players with the draft stacked with mids, flankers and wingers and light on for key position players. I'm starting to come round to the idea of trading out of the first round this year if we found a suitable trade partner.

If we could move 13 for a pick in the 20s or 30s and a future first I think that would be a great outcome. We can then take some project players this year and arm ourselves with 3 x 1st rounders, 2 x second rounders to use in a superior draft and/or trade for A-grade talent.

I don't mind the strategy but if everyone rates next year's draft higher than this year then why would they give up their first for next year if they only slide slightly forward?  Having said that our team seem to be able to work their magic with pick swapping so you might be on to something.

Here is my alternative strategy for pick 13:

  • we are not going to get into the elite end of the draft this year (top 5 or so) and the next batch is "throw a blanket over" material.
  • 2023 draft is looking very strong
  • we have lots of young talent at Casey that needs an opportunity (Turner, Bowey, JJ, Howes, JVR, Chandler all missed R23).  We need to give them an opportunity and show them a career path or we will lose them as we have Bedford.
  • we need to position ourselves so we can access some really elite talent, not just good talent.

To this end I'd look at trading 13 for a future 1st which teams that are rebuilding might find attractive.  We might get something in return like a pick in the 30's. Draft in Grundy, promote Chandler and draft a couple in the 30's or 40's.

That leaves us with 3 first rounders next year plus your future 1st for 2024.  We also have 2 seconds in 2024. We would then be in a fantastic position in a very good draft to trade up higher to get some really elite talent or trade in a very good player.

I think we have enough good core talent both in the team and at Casey to take this approach.  I don't think we need to add good but not elite talent this year.  If we are to contend well into the future we need access to either the really pointy end of the draft or enough collateral to satisfy a really elite talent trade.

Fans would scream but I think it's a great idea.  So, there you go, pull it apart.

I like the idea but based on previous years our coaches want players now and will probably go the other way and trade next years picks for this years draft...

What are we thinking draft gurus?

@spirit of norm smith @Pennant St Dee

I’m thinking Ginbey won’t be available, West Coast will take him with one of their 2 picks before us.

Do we look towards filling a need for a key tall at this pick

KPD - Lewis Hayes/Busslinger

KPF - Jefferson

I actually wouldn’t mind us taking a punt with this pick on the Vic Metro boy Gruzewski who showed a bit to me in the championships. Another WA boy who will be a little under the radar due to missing a lot of the season with injuries is Ed Allan, he has a high ceiling and could be one who we say how did he not get taken earlier.

Small forward who impacts the scoreboard could also be something we look at Konstanty with that pick.

Having said all that I was really impressed with Sheezal in the championships and as good as the draft is next year if he’s sitting there at pick 5 do we offer the Hawks pick 13 and next years first and second (bearing in mind we have Freos 1st and 2nd pick) and pick 37 for pick 5 and 24 this year.

Thanks @Pennant St Dee, like Phillipou  - who will most likely be gone by our pick, he has a frame on him that would add another dimension to our midfield. Do you have any insights to add to what you've written above?

The key backs will be on our radar I’m sure.  I can’t see a 3rd tall who’s mostly traits like Gruzewski being a need.

Ed Allan made it on to Twomey’s radar which probably means recruiters were talking, then he went and blew up the combine. He might even go to the Eagles second pick. That combination of size and speed is rare

Well i hope we pick up a pacy elite ball user since we just traded and delisted probably our three paciest players (Hunt, Bedford, Baker).

Do we have to take two picks? And will we still have a list spot for the mid season draft?

The Pies picked up Ash Johnson in the mid season draft and I think there’s a good chance to pick up talent there.

I can see merit in flipping our pick into next year unless we really love someone.

If we save our currency it gives us more options for trades.

We have plenty of list spots to save one for summer and/or midseason. Most years teams will have a long term injury too.

Ash Johnson or Newcombe will be rare in the midseason and generally go in the top 3, but it is a useful draft to find talent. Hopefully Disco shows why this year.

I believe MSD can come on as Rookies can't they. Disco is a Rookie listed player.

Ed Allan is a good size with really good endurance. Could be a big bodied mid who floats forward in a Bont fashion.

I reckon West Coast we’re looking at Busslinger at pick 8 and Ginbey at 12, but I’m hearing Ginbey has interest from a few clubs who may pounce with live trading if the Eagles don’t take him at pick 8. If they get Busslinger and Ginbey that’s them set down back for 10 years with, Barrass, Bazzo, Busslinger and Edwards

Apparently Henry Hustwaite from the Dandenong Stingrays is highly regarded?

Could he be a Marcus Bontempelli "type" player?

At least this English fella thinks so? 🤔

Here is the video link about him:

Yep. Saw this kid do some impressive stuff in the Vic metro/country match.  Great skills and decision making. Had a growth spurt and now 194cm!!

Club trading has been fantastic and think we will use our current 2022/23 picks as they stand.

2022 first option Jefferson and if gone. Hustwaite.  Importantly,  both Victorian 😑

Hope we get that Jefferson, kid kicked 7 goals in 2 games with a fractured leg.

we need some more young KPF.

This year could be a year for late steals, these kids are the "covid" kids, there development has been stunted a bit and haven't played a lot of footy over the past 3 years(which is why experts are saying its a shallow draft, they haven't seen enough of these kids)

this is where talent gurus come into their own and earn their money.  I wouldn't bee surprised if some kids taken 20-30 turn out to be a lot better than they have been touted to be.

Agree with a pacey ball user, unfortunately none of those three were good ball users.   a Whitfield type would be amazing if they are in the draft there somewhere.

Phillipou is born 27th of December so just qualifies for this years draft, he is nearly a year younger than some of the top picks this year.

He is a big boy already (192cm) could grow more

Would be a top 3 pick next year

I would offer pick 13 our first next year for Gold Coast ( Adelaides) or hawks first this year

As it stands, my current run sheet looks like

1. Ashcroft BRIS F/s 2.Cadman GWS 3.Tsatas NM 4.Wardlaw NM 5.Sheezel  EssFC 6.Humphrey  Suns  7.Phillipou Hawks 8.Clark cats  9.Ginbey WC  10.Mackenzie stk 11.Hollands Carl 12.HewittWB 13.Busslinger WC

With Ashcroft as a father son pick , our pick “13” becomes 14.

- I was really hoping for some trade moves from Freo (as part of their LJ offer) to get a top 5-6 pick (ideally from the Hawks)  to get Sheezel or Humphrey but unfortunately not to be. JT might have to weave some magic to utilise 13 and a future 2023 pick.

- If I was in the seat and it hadn’t been done, Dees should at “14” look to put in a bid on Jaspa Fletcher (Lions father son). It’d cost Lions and squeeze their picks in the 30s out even more or remove them. (Worst case, Lions refuse … which is very very unlikely … we get a gun running skilled midfielder)

- JT might look to address the key forward need (Tmcd & BBB likely have one-two year left) and Schache who is a casino spin. We need a partner for JVR.  Likely either Matt Jefferson or Max Gruzewski.  Jefferson is like a Max King type.  Gruzewski reminds me of a taller forward version of Col Sylvia (maybe it’s the kicking style).
I’d take the punt on Gruzewski if I had the choice. He just looks AFL capable in the way he is able to take contested marks and his kicking looks smoothe.  Showed his values in helping Lewis Hayes finish the time trial.
Harry Lemmey is perhaps the other big youngster that I was impressed with at the championships for SA.  He might slide to 37 but I doubt it given clubs desire to tall ruck/forward options.

- I am a huge fan of Oliver Hollands. He is a running machine, with the footy IQ and skills to become a very good midfielder. Very impressive in the carnival and I think was equal BOG in the under 18s Vic metro v Vic Country game.  His win in the 2km time trial proved his elite running. I can live in hope that he’d fall to MFC but I have the Blues picking him ahead of us.

- Jaxon Binns is another that I see real AFL quality in. Local boy with the Stingrays, he reminds me of Rory Sloane in his under 18s year. He just runs and gets the link play across half back to wing to half forward. Skills are good. Played some excellent footy in the championships and very impressed with his game v Vic metro. His 2km time trial at the combine showed his elite running ability , and he tested elite for agility.  Others have him in the 30s-40s but I’d happily pick him as a bolter at 14.

- Wildcards: Brayden George and Sam Gilbey.  Both were injured and unavailable for majority of 2022. George had a great start to 2022 as a goalkicking half forward before injury.   Gilbey has been forgotten but showed enough in 2021 with his skills and ball winning, before his illness and injuries in 2022.  Ed Allan is another back from injury. Tested well at the combine. Anyone who wins the 20metre sprint has to be considered strongly .  Back from injury, had a great finish in the WAFL colts for Claremont.

I say we turn our attention to the 2023 draft try to get two picks inside 10 if possible.

Or one inside 5 and one inside 15.

Operation land Zane Duursma.

I would do anything for him.

Yes would love to convert our current 2x 1st round 2023 picks into a top 5 pick next year.  Gotta hope Freo’s bubble bursts next year.  Operation Zane Duursma sounds like a plan.  Operation Ashton Moir also on the radar.  Operation Harley Reid would need a huge war chest imv.

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
