Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

It's hard to be creative when the go to option is consistently bomb the ball to the left-hand pocket - ok maybe a slight over exaggeration but our system of efficiently moving the ball to our forwards certainly needs some work - we get far too many inside 50's that result in zero score conversion

Makes me wonder....Are they all directed to bomb into that pocket?

Imo that "should" be the last option when nothing else is on.

Is gameplan a reason we are not showing much creativity?

Are we told just to execute basic skills and not really take the game on?

Are we just lazy and all head for that pocket and repeat?

Do we not have a good forwards coach that is teaching them any forward craft?

Our crumbers are rarely front and square.

Our talls are rarely leadiing.

Imo there is so much that needs to come together in the forward half of ground, we just look amateur in this area.

Still not sold on ANB or Spargo as forwards, they work hard defensively but not doing enough in the forward half.   Maybe a few personnel changes would help us too?

Interested to hear what other posters think in regards to our forward issues and how we go about getting better in this area.

All interesting points - not sure this thread is the best placed to discuss though 🙂

Agree there is a lot that can and should be improved - not sure there is any single reason why our I50 efficiency is NQR

This year I believe we were ranked 3rd for average I50 count (last year 2nd) - however our average goals per game rank dropped from 4th to 6th - not that bad but obviously worse

One of the biggest shifts in team stats was average tackles per game where we led the comp last year and this year dropped to 13th - fitness / mindset? who knows but it looked like that watching from the sidelines some games

I'm not a fan of the predictable kick-in to the left hand wing every time either - I'd love to see a bit more variation in that as well - maybe a Bowey or Salem taking the kick ins as I think their kicking is vastly superior to May's

'Footywire' which is usually fairly accurate is showing a one year contract for Schache.

It surprises me as when a player changes club it is usually for a minimum of 2 years.

If it is one year it really gives Schache a strong message to decide how much he wants a football career.

I'll update the Contracts Thread for Schache.  If anyone sees any other info on his contract please let me know.

from my experience FW usually moves the layer to their new club and leaves the existing contract length tacked on which would be reflected in what you're seeing for hunter and in schaches case he was ooc so they have to at least say '23 when they moved him. i would imagine it is +1 on both those deals making it LH 3yrs and JS 2yrs just as a wild guess but could be wrong

Yeah, they updated Jackson but I didn't check other players that have move clubs.

Contract length may sift through in the coming weeks.  Its a bit annoying that it isn't in press releases or discussed in trade articles.

I'm quite optimistic about this one, i've always rated his talent, a bit like Weid he's not quite been able to really lock down a spot, but i think he can really take a step at the Dees and be a best 22 player.

I'm more hopeful than optimistic ...

Josh Schache is a depth acquisition that arose purely because the Weid wanted to leave. Tim Lamb said as much. He also mentioned that his versatility was attractive.

He will play a few cameos for us if needed but spend most time with Casey. He won’t become a best 22 player and won’t miraculously solve our forward problems. Would be very pleasantly surprised if he did though but I’m not holding out much hope.

Can’t be any worse than the Weed (saying with respect for a man who did his best)  The Shack was competing against  much better forwards at the Dogs, therefore I’m hopeful but not expecting the Shack to be our main power house forward.

Maybe the change of scene, and the kick in the butt of being dropped will enable / push him to reach his true potential.
Don’t know that he needs to be written off completely at this stage.

Love the sentiment... what's the evidence that that happens though Mono for other players across the AFL/VFL history...?

He sounds lovely in the interview... lovely person, lovely vibe... Casey for him then...(mostly)...but please...prove me wrong.

Guys still young. I'm hoping he can prove all the He Won't and He Ain't Gonna people wrong. Bit more mobile than BBB, so might take his spot if not soon, in the future.

Revising the game plan in the forward line could make a real difference to our scoring rate and accuracy, including all of the entries to the fwd line itself. Hunter and Schache could be entering into a carpet ride, given their attributes and also, most of our existing forwards would benefit as well because they are potent footballers traditionally given a teaspoon of opportunity instead of a tablespoon of common sense. I'm thinking what good forward feeds could be possible, adding the talent-base with Hunter and Schache, fed by Langdon, Clarrie, Tracca, Gus, Rivers, Sparrow et al, and observant, agile JVR, Fritta, BBB, Petty, Kozzie, Spargs, ANB, et al. It's also about suitable pathways being available, eyes up, without the gaps in the chain of events that formerly had to dictate that in the majority of cases, we bombed long - over the heads of the gaps that existed - to get the ball into that disastrous left forward pocket.

As Tim Lamb says, it's his versatility that is attractive. Is taller than Weid, can play forward or back and has proven that he is a goal kicker in the VFL. Could also be cover for the injury depleted BBB.

Sadly, Weid never did. With some intense coaching and training, could do well and surprise.

Played a few good games this year.

Was a much better year the one prior.

For a Senior player he lacks consistency for me.

Could never doubt his effort, just his output/skills.

Each to their own though!

  • 2 weeks later...

I watched the first half of the July 20/21 Dees v Doggies game yesterday and the Doggies had Schache playing in the backline and back up ruck, he spent a lot of the time matching up with Dogga.

I'd have to say he eclipsed Dogga in the ruck and played a pretty useful game.

He's got a good pair of hands, can take a grab and kick straight, which is a bonus. He may be a little light at 94K's but is a good height and looks more comfortable playing in a defensive role. As has been mentioned if he can free up Petty to go forward, that could solve a couple of problems.

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger.
