I said last week that he's been our worst performer this year and I still stand by that he's clearly more the natural defender and with Hibberd's injury he can just take over that spot. A fit Hiberd and a fit Brown I don't think he gets a game. I'd love to see him go back and defend having both May and Lever there will help him out a lot. If Brown is fit I'd prefer to see him, Roo and TMac play the key post.

I'm all in on Petty being our new KPF in 2023 - probably at the expense of BBB

If JVR has a very big summer and gets super fit and puts on more size there is no reason why he doesn't get AFL games next season

With the addition of these two I think our forward structure would be way more potent both in terms of competing in the air but also at ground level - both have also shown that when given a look they are very capable at set shot conversion

Begs the question who replaces Petty in the backs

Problem is Petty is our tallest defender so we don't have an automatic replacement that can easily take the big gorillas or resting rucks of opposition teams

Options

Turner - I rate him highly and he is an AFL tall back in waiting - 2023 could be the year he cements a starting position. But probably needs to muscle up more - probably doesn't have the height to replace Petty's role

TMac - yep he could go back and provide a solution to help cover Petty's move forward. But is he physically able to be the player he once was - big risk IMO

Weid - seems to have found a role as a mobile ruck - personally don't think his ruck work is that great and he is particularly vulnerable near opposition goals where he gets out bodied far too easily. He also can't hold marks in general play. Some have suggested trialing him as a KPD - it could be worth a try as he has the height and is reasonably mobile - I remain skeptical due to lack of aggression but who knows

Tommo - I don't think he plays tall enough and lacks mobility so its difficult to find a suitable matchup on a regular basis - like him as a footballer and you know he is going to give 100% but I just don't think he's a KPD

J Smith - not the height of Petty but with his leap he is probably best suited to defending the oppositions tallest forward if Petty went forward. His biggest issue as we all know is injuries - he just can't stay on the park

Corey Ellison - Casey tall that IMO has shown enough to be given some consideration as a rookie listed player - not sure of his height (193cm ?) but is a late developer that could really grow in statue quickly in an AFL system

New recruit - yes I know we all think we need another tall forward but if Petty goes forward as I believe he should we may actually be better looking for a tall back - arguably easier to find than a tall KPF

Id shelve Petty up forward and almost be tempted to blood Matt Jefferson

I've watched all Casey games so far - Matt Jefferson is a long way off being ready for AFL football.

Not saying he doesn't have potential, but still a lot of work to do - I'd expect he will play at Casey all season just like JVR. He is a long way behind JVR from a physical standpoint at the same time.

I think we have been blessed at the moment by being able to experiment, blood and rest/cover players, without effecting the win column. Along those lines; I would replace JVR at some stage and bring in Schache, I'm aware we brought him into the Club as backup. I believe JVR is part of the future but as a 19yr old I don't want him beaten up by some of the bigger defenders, which is likely if we keep him in the side for too long. In part I think we have used Petty to help with this but I think Petty should go back eventually.

However there were times JVR was left against Barras. Not sure why TMac or Petty would leave JVR to deal with the strongest defender from the opposition.

I don't think that will ever be JVR's problem. He's big enough to look after himself football wise.

The best attribute he has at the moment is he will fight to bring the ball to ground if he can't mark it and we don't have anyone else who does this.

Having said that, I don't think he is a lock for the season.

The fight he will have is to keep his spot.

I think it's called strategy or a tactic perhaps but it probably illustrates my point about JVR. I don't want to see him play 20 games in the home and away as a 19yr old.

Haven’t seen Jefferson much, but if JVR’s development is an example I would think he would be most unlikely to play this season.   JVR was held back ever when we were in desperate plight.

Maybe, given the state of the game, it was a learning opportunity?

It seems clear to me: Petty in the forward line for two weeks; in those weeks we average 20 goals 10 behinds. What more could we want? Sure, he is a bit at sea at the moment but he is contesting, chasing, bringing the ball to ground and pressuring. If it ain’t broke….

I think BBB will gave to wait, get completely injury free and maybe find his best form at Casey. Meanwhile, we keep things as they are but if we have an injury then  BBB gets back in. If no injury, it is likely that JVR will need a freshen-up after a few weeks in the big league and then he and BBB can take turns each 2 or 3 weeks for the rest of the season.

Petty is taking the pressure off the other talls and looking to be playing the defensive role against the best intercepter. I think its working well so far and should be persisted with.

Well I was one who was pushing for Petty to go forward but I think it's time to put the experiment to rest. He hasn't really had a great impact, not hitting the scoreboard enough, not taking enough marks and it's weakened our backline. Was good to try out but I think Petty back to defense and Brown coming in needs to happen this week so Petty can regain some synergy with the backline before taking on Port.

It's a good trick to have up our sleeve if required but he should be played primarily in defense.

I wish that were the case but the truth is that we are lacking in options from injury and form. It would have been great if Petty shone in his new role. I know he takes a good defender but has struggled with contested marking and I'm guessing has only kicked around 3 goals. So not great. Schache didnt look too hot against North and both Tmac and Bbb have been fighting injuries. The former has a new issue but even when in the side looked slow and lacked intensity. When Bbb arrived at the club not so long ago, we were all scratching our heads how to accommodate our talent. Now it seems we are lacking talls and that we are robbing our backline. It not only hasn't worked it's left our defence vulnerable. Fingers are crossed that either Bbb or Tmac make their way back in tge seniors and play some good footy alongside Jvr. And Petty plays his great role in defence.

The issue is not that Petty can’t be a good forward. He absolutely can be and he rarely gets outmarked which is exactly what you need from a tall forward.
The issue is that at the moment, while he’s learning to play forward, our backline is losing too much without him, and our forwardline isn’t gaining enough to balance this out.
We need him back, especially with May in just ok form.
It not only makes us defensively better, it frees Lever up to play in his best intercept role.

Feeling a little bit pleased with Harry's 6 goal effort this morning 😀

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
