Quotas please, if anything they were probably forced to look at the female talent pool due to the lack of quality in the male one.

For example there's no doubt that Sarah Jones is a big step up from Eddie McGuire when hosting the footy.

There is definitely anti woman thoughts when it comes to AFL and the supporters. They ripped into Kelly Underwood not long ago. I don't see much difference between commentators as long as they commentate properly.

B.T is a clown Brayshaw is a [censored] and Dwayne Russell is the worst commentator going around and Dermie has a fascination with predicting the game and always gets it wrong. The rest are alright.

Talk about horrible commentators Rex Hunt takes the cake. As has already been mentioned you wouldn't know a football game was played under Rex Hunt just stupid nicknames for players you never heard of.

I think Daisy is the best commentator in the game. Furthermore, her special comments are way more insightful and demonstrate an understanding of the modern game, and its tactics, that the old dinosaur commentators just don't have.

Daisy is very easy to listen to and genuinely insightful.
Jones is just not suitable for it, he's not very articulate and is not easy to listen to in longer spats.
Dermott is painstakingly horrible and is one of few commentators that I actively mute/don't listen to his commentating.
Carey is decent, speaks well enough and conveys his points.

Other ones who have recently stepped into the role;

Dangerfield is not great and I would tend to tune out/mute in longer parts.
Jack Riewoldt can't articulate that well (same as Jones) and doesn't contribute anything super substantial.

Dermie speaks as if he is commentating a chess game where he has seen 5 moves ahead. Annoying and overly analytical.

Rex on the other hand is possibly the worst commentator in the history of the game and any point he may make, right or wrong is undermined by his own appalling work.

Underwood is an abomination as a commentator.

If you want an example of a network attempting to shoe-horn a woman into the coverage beyond all expectation of ability, its her.

Daisy is the polar opposite.

I dont find daisy’s comments particularly insightful. That’s not saying much for the other C7 commentators. Unfortunately for her the other part of the role is how she presents on television. Her high pitched voice is particularly annoying. Not fit for television

I'll give Dermie credit I think he's really smart when it comes to footy but his problem is that he's too smart, it's like someone talking calculus off the cuff and expecting everyone to easily get what he's saying. I do like him as a footy mind but he's best suited for half time when he has time to ramble on rather than in game. The best thing about Daisy is she explains things in the most concise and easy to understand terms possible for that moment.

While it is a different view to mine, I don't have a problem with you feeling this way. Not everyone sees commentary exactly the same way and we all have different things that we want to get out of it. For instance I've got friends who love BT because they like they love all the silly stuff and brain breakdowns, they find it entertaining. I personally could do without it but it's different strokes.

Daisy is OK.  Doesn't do a lot for me, but there are plenty worse.  She does have some good insight.  She wasn't selected on merit, more-so her sex, but it is what it is and she's shown enough in the role to suggest she's not misplaced.

Garry Lyon annoys me the most, because he never shuts up.  He must be paid by the word.  He also repeats the same point so many times.  I have to mute it.

I'm also not mad on Nathan Jones.  But he'll get better.  It would be daunting in your first year.  With experience I'm sure he won't sound so subservient.

Kelli Underwood is easily the worst caller I've ever heard.  The voice and hackneyed cliches are the pits.  Thankfully, she gets the graveyard timeslot.  Once again, she's not calling based on merit.

Oh for meritocracy.  But it's not the world we live in.

Clearly ^^^ dubdee will have a conniption at my comments.  C'est la vie.

I agree on Keli Underwood and I agree that of course Channel 7 has given Daisy her job initially because she was pioneering women's footy and is an exceptional public speaker. However as you said, she has more than earnt her spot.

I do think however that it would be remiss of us not to acknowledge that basically all the commentators were not selected on merit, but rather on the fact that once upon a time they were great player, and apparently that makes them palatable or knowledgeable or skilled enough to commentate. It does not.

Wayne Carey, a woman basher, is apparently selected on merit? Nah. BT who literally can't tell his own head from his own [censored]? Certainly not.

The best commentator for me is Adam Papalia. Now here is a guy who was selected on his game calling ability and not because he was a big name player who can't string 3 words together.

Luke Hodge is also a shocker - can’t put 2 words together.

Spot on.  ALL his comments are simply a verbal repeat of the replay after the event, something that anyone with eyes can see.

e.g ...." and there is Smith who moves left to kick on his right and score the goal..."

No insight as to how or why Smith got the ball, just vision commentary.

I guess it never occurred to Rex and Dermot that Daisy etc being on air is because tv networks want more women watching football games and football shows.  From an audience perspective the network decisions would be gender based.

As many have noted in this thread male commentators and show hosts/panelists are generally ordinary.  Women just aren't interested in watching/listening to blokey, has-been players trying to be showmen and make the telecasts and programs about them using voice effects, silly words and dumb questions of each other to sound interesting but add little insight into the actual game.

Not saying all the female commentators are really good.  But in Daisy they picked the totally wrong target.

Rex and Dermot are seeing Daisy on tv through the prism of their own biases ie men should be calling/commenting on games.  Under what rock have they been living in the last 10 years?

I'm probably one of a few that's not really big on Daisy as a commentator. But in all honesty I'm not big on many commentators in today's game. Personally think the standard and talent has dropped significantly.

I'm more interested in her career as a full time coach for Geelong because I think she'll be a ripper! I think it's been magnificent to see her career the way it's panned out from being a pioneer of women's footy to now becoming an assistant coach at an AFL club. Hopefully this now opens the door to more opportunity for women coming through the men's coaching ranks.

In terms of commentators I do like Anthony Hudson the most. Some of the games iconic moments captured have also included his commentary which creates good theatre, e.g Jeremy Howe mark in 2012 and the Buddy "Thiirrrteeeen"

A left field one who I've really enjoyed over the past couple of years and deserve significant air time is Nigel Carmody. For those that don't know he usually does the AFL women's team and also the VFL on 7. He is seriously underrated in my eye and I would like to see him get promoted to more prime time slots next year while they [censored] off BT and Carey.

I know James Brayshaw annoys a lot of people but you have to admit, his Clayton Oliver's "Bang bang bang" commentary will certainly go down as one of the best moments in that grand final. Among others that is..

Thankyou for making that clear.

Underwood is awful and now the " little master" is gone has nothing to say anyway.

One only has to listen to Daisy quietly correcting BT ' s stupid mis observations during the finals to put any debate to bed.

Not only was she correct ,she was able to time her corrections so as not to embarrass BT beyond what he  does himself.

As to the worst? Yes BT is pipped by Rex ,but the long gone and never missed Harry Beitzel says hullo.

Jones won't be on air next year and no one will notice.

Listening to Rex on the radio was shocking, you’d have no idea about the score or even who had the ball, was all about bluster, BS, and  nicknames. It was terrible when no other stations were calling and you had to listen to him.

BT is the modern day equivalent, really embarrassingly bad, but some people must like him, and it takes all types.

Carey & Dermie are very good when talking about playing as a forward, but don’t provide much insight on current day strategy.

Daisy is a star, articulate, explains what’s happening and why. This would be to complex for Rex to understand and why he doesn’t like her! If she added in an Abletttttttt or Yibbydeeeyabbydee, he would appreciate her more!

Just heard Daisy on SEN this morning with Whateley responding to Rex etc. and she is all class. Always considered, thoughtful, balanced, empathetic, she really is a star!!

Managed to put Rex, Dermie and co. in their box, as out of date, comfortable living in the past with their mates. Managed to do it an an inoffensive way, made me think of pen mightier than the sword. Followed by Gerard highlighting how many modern players pay zero attention to older players as they are so out of tune with modern day.

Go Daisy!!

Followed by Gerard highlighting how many modern players pay zero attention to older players as they are so out of tune with modern day.

And by extension, most of the footy media, dominated as it is by bonehead ex footballers, who's ignorance about how the game is played in 2022 makes their analysis all but useless.

People would do well to follow the modern player's lead, assuming they are interested in understanding how the game is ACTUALLY played in 2022.

If not, carry on listening to King, Lyon x 2, Riewoldt, Brereton, increasingly Lewis and Montagna (who are both following the maxim that ex footballers become more irrelevant every year they are out of the game, because I assume they don't feel the need to keep on top of things), Carey, Brown, Taylor, Ling, 'sellars' (l mean please), etc etc etc.

The only ex footballers I rate in terms of their analysis, and ability to communicate it are (in order):

  • Sanderson (who, weirdly, has disappeared from sen),
  • Lauren Arnell
  • Buckley (but, like Sanderson he is a recent coach, so probably shouldn't be on the list)
  • Bartel,
  • Mcguane,
  • Delidio
  • Lynch,
  • Pavlich,
  • Dunstall.
  • And I don't mind Lloyd too much.

Daisy isn't an ex footballer, but she is a total gun. Knows the game and critically can communicate information (a skill I would have thought would be a kpi for anyone in the media - though sadly, this is clearly not the case). And I don't mind Jack Riewoldt's insights.

I feel like I'm missing someone, but still, that is bugger all given how many ex footballers are paid to talk about the game.

It's possible there are some others who do understand the game, but as Axis of Bob sagely noted in another thread, that doesn't mean much if they don't have the ability to communicate and convey complex information in a way the audience can understand.

Unfortunately, Jones is in this boat, as is Watson, 'silk' and Hodge.

In another thread there was some trolling about footy media appointments and merit. Which is hilarious because there are so many examples of ex afl footballers in the media who are embarrassingly woeful at their job and could not possibly have been appointed on merit.

If you retrospectively applied a merit lens to the footy media, 95% of people would get the sack.

Good to see someone recognise Carmody's efforts. He reminds me a bit of Peter Donegan, a quality sportscaster who could turn his hand to pretty much any sport. A few years ago the VFL & AFLW telecasts were largely anchored by Carmody, Jason Bennett and Abbey Holmes and I thought they did a terrific, professional job. Good to see the three of them get more time on bigger stages although Carmody's expanded role has mainly been in horse racing coverage.

I'm also a Papalia fan. He understands that his role is to call the game as accurately as possible and he just gets on with it.

I prefer Daisy's analysis to most and I suspect the main reason that she's good is because she's still involved in the game. Special comments / analysts seem to me to have a limited shelf life. Some may recall Cameron Ling being lauded for his special comments in his first year on 7. He was bloody excellent. But with each passing year he's provided less & less meaningful analysis and more and more cliches. He's hopeless now.

Malcolm Blight was another. Straight out of the game his on-air input was a breath of fresh air. Then he lost his marbles & from his most recent utterances, still hasn't found them.

When it comes to hosting footy coverage I think both Sarah Jones & Kath Loughnan do a terrific job. On 7 Abby Gelmi is good but under utilised.

Hannabal has summed up my views on Kelli Underwood to a tee. Nails down a chalkboard stuff.

To finish up, I've always thought Rex Hunt was a megalomaniacal farkwit. He is, always has been and always will be about Rex. Any of his "offerings" should always be viewed in this light
