Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

First off this is a great appointed, forgetting that he’s a favourite son of the club he has lots of runs on the board as an assistant to the best coach of the decade.

The fact that he is a favourite son who gave us some great memories just adds an element of romanticism to it that warms the heart after a frustrating year.

With all the chatter about what this means for Goody there’s a couple of different schools of thought. For me the way I look at it is this: entering into a season where it was always finals or bust for Simon we have managed to get him the assistance of one of the highest rated assistant coaches in the game. It minimises the excuses for Simon and he should be stoked to have someone of Adem’s quality on board.

The other way to look at it is this: the club isn’t confident in Simon’s ability to lead the team and is putting a succession plan in place in advance with Yze potentially taking over mid-late next year if results go poorly.

It for now can we just not enjoy have Oooooooooooooze back at the club?

Why?

Interestingly there's only 9 months or so between them age-wise. 43-44.

yet I would value Yze's near decade under Clarkson and insdie the hawks machine (with fagan as well) as far more valuable than Goody's time at the Bombers and with us under Roos.

If Yze can build on the CV with a successful stint helping Dees into finals, he will be the enxt in line for elsewhere .

Good luck to him.

Rapt to have Yze on board.

But I don't completely buy into the Clarkson/Hawthorn success comparison.

Equally premierships as a player:

Yze:  0

Goodwin:  2

Sometimes I think it comes down to the luck of being in right place at the right time and just because you are associated with past sucess or not doesn't necessarily equip you any better.  That said all reports are that both Yze and Goodwin have quality skill sets in particular areas and hopefully that ultimately brings us sucess with them and our current team.

There's no definitve eveidence or patterns on the benefits, or not,  to being a top coach to playing in earlier premierships. For every Barassi, there's a Hafey for example (or maybe a Fagan). Being a former elite player can help though. e.g. Phil Jackson in the NBA. Yze is an AA player. Some at Adelaide rate Goodwin as the Crows best to date skipper also. He definitely has pedigree - just not yet in coaching and off-field leadership.

You last point is a good one. The Age reports Yze, apart from strategy,  has also been gaolkicking coach,, line coach, and a development coach under the greatest modern coach in our times.

A real coup to get him into what I consider our glaring FD weaknesses (albeit defence is now sorted ).

Will be really good to see what wounders the Ooooz can do with Fristch.  If he can turn around Fritta's pretty ordanary set shot goal kicking from this year, we would be a 1 or 2 goal per game better side from that alone.

I'm interested to see what the core intended role for Yze is at the club, but surely whatever it is his kicking coaching will form a pretty important side role.

Luck does play a part but Goodwin's success was 1997-98

Yze's association is much more relevant and recent. The number of Clarkson apprentices that have gone on to do good things is first rate.

Goodwin sadly needs a lot of babysitting and our coaching assistants to date have had a notable lack of success.

So its a good move but IMO the sooner he goes the better for the MFC

Goodwin's position this time last year and now are chalk and cheese as we all know.

He now effectively has until the mid season bye next year and if unsuccessful Yze will be given the remainder of the year to see what he can do.

Another performance like  2020 won't and shouldn't be tolerated.

If by chance Goodwin is successful Yze will be into the next available senior coaching position which is probably North at the end of 2022 with a possibility of Adelaide or the Hawks.

You see things through a strange prism.

Goodwin was definitely on notice in 2020 - the result we achieved was equivocal and the year was crazy so he will survive, if we'd had a year like Essendon or GWS I believe he would be sacked now.

I see 2021 as a replay of the expectations of 2020, we need to make finals and put up a good showing in them or he's gone.

2020 equivocal...

let me borrow those rose coloured glasses

An injury free team that won one game against equal/superior opposition (St Kilda) by a point. Collingwood were injury riddled when we met them and we failed against every other team in the 8 during home and away for the third year running (except GWS in 2018). He's treading water at best.

Glad to see you think he'll go next year if he repeats this year.. if not for the money he'd be gone this year and we all know that

No, for the record I don't agree. You can read my previous post for my position.

Mazer.  I have always been intrigued by the irony of the Bummers, at the low they were in after their unconscionable drug experimentation, appointing a pharmacist as their head coach.  Intriguing.

I've always believed (without evidence, just a hunch) that a senior coach needs to have the experience of being involved in winning a Premiership. It could be as a player, coach (senior or assistant) or as a football manager. Winning Premierships doesn't just happen; it needs a lot to go right and if your senior coach has never been at a club when it's happened before, I can't see how he knows what is required.

However, the converse isn't always true. Having expereinced a Premiership doesn't automatically mean success. After all Mark Neeld and many others have experienced Premiership success prior to becoming a seior coach and for whatever reason have been unable to convert that experience into a successful senior coaching career.

So where did Alistair Clarkson's premiership experience come from?  ... Paul Roos and Luke Beverage for that matter.

I guess there are exceptions to every rule.

I love the part of this interview with Adem where he talks about the need for 'cohesion' in our midfield group:

I love that bloke. My heart is beating true.

As an aside, Adem’s niece used to work at the firm where I work (a few years ago now). She was a first class person - very well regarded, both professionally and personally.

She was a passionate Demons’ supporter and she said that her entire family was too - they all loved Uncle Adem.

It’s brilliant he’s back at the club.

I’ve got a good feeling about next year.

Why?

I agree with above initial comments to this post totally and for awhile now I have wondered why the MFC have always given Goody a very senior assistant and wonder if it has any thing to do with their concern over his stand alone coaching ability ? Other Clubs do not appear to have the same setup as we have had in this regard.

I also feel that if Goody does not get the results the Board desire within his current contract that he will be moved on and I suspect Yze may be the next coach in waiting.  What do you think ???

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
