Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

It is not Rocket science that we need two tall forwards as focal points and one of them to crash the pack for the crumbers every now and again. The Weid  IMO is  crucial and now must be paired with another tall, may it be Brown Tmac or Petty when fit.

He had a good game without TMac and held his own. Needs a partner in crime.  I hope Goody plays him and gives him time to perform.

If its not "Rocket Science" and many experts on this forum could see it why couldn't Simon?? Therin lies a bigger problem!

I cannot explain people's functioning of their brain PF let alone Goody's. Maybe he wanted the Weid to earn  his place in the side or needed him to suffer more ....... Could have played Brown instead in  earlier games.

However he decided on medium size bodies and failed miserably. I was just as frustrated so were many others l bet. Maybe Goody can see the light now.

How Melbourne would it be for us to Trade him to Collingwood and then Weids would go on and kick 6-8 against us every time. Nope, keep him until he is 28-29 and if he is no good by then trade him.

If Weids kicks 18 this season, he stays. Let's get 80-100 games into him then see where he is before we call the executioner.

In a normal 22 game season 2 a week is 44 a season and would replace the lost Hogan goals. In today's game that is a good tally. What happened to 100 goals a season players?

He looks ok, he just needs to clunk his marks. Get to the right spot, and has a red hot go, which is good for our crumbing forwards. But it would be good to see him hold a few more marks, and really assert himself on the game. I think he is capable. Definitely still developing, will make a nice forward. Collingwood would have their eyes on him, as we have done all the development, and Weideman actually looks pretty capable.

Zone defence was introduced which meant those forwards no longer had space to dominate on their own. Instead teams need to work hard around the zone, making individual scorers more valuable.

I'd question if you even need a pure fwd these days if all they do is kick 2 a week, Dan Menzel did that and look where he is at now.

Now that there isn't 80 goal, let alone 100 goal players the key fwds need to do more than kick 2 week, some mids can nearly do as much all the while getting it  near 30 times as well. If Weid is to survive he needs to be getting those 2 on average every game along with having a hand in a few more or getting up the field and being a link player on the wing, otherwise we may as well be playing another mid size player who has a more rounded game, ANB as much as he annoys me delivers as much round the goals right now and brings more to the table in other areas.

The way I see it the more things change the more they stay the same. You need 2 KPFs as a marking threat to draw opposition defenders:

  1. it makes space for the medium and small forwards to operate in more effectively.
  2. they may even mark it!

Looked significantly bigger in the upper body on Saturday night.

I think both him and OMac are starting to build the bodies required to compete consistently at AFL level.

Let's not forget they are 24 & 23 years old and this is usually when KPPs start to become more dominant.

Good key forwards create far more goals than they kick. Modern footy is all about intercepts - a key forward's role is as much about preventing opposition defenders marking the ball as it is about marking it themselves. Menzel could take a grab and kick goals, but he was a liability defensively. I don't think it's a complete coincidence that the first game we've had an effective stay-at-home key forward resulted in us kicking our highest score for the year.

I was lucky enough to go to the game. Interesting how good Weid looks when teammates honour his leads and actually kick the ball to the right spot in front of him.

Just a question IT, please. I sensed a slightly harder edge in the body language, am i imagining or not?

There is a big difference between having an opinion and being an expert on a particular matter, but if you wish to dream go ahead.

Very interesting question willmoy. I thought there was a lot of body language going off during the game that you don't pick up on TV. I was particularly pleased to be there for that reason. My take on his body language for what it's worth was that he wasn't attacking contests going for his marks like I saw him do in his first couple of seasons. His body language said to me that in his head he isn't entirely confident in his own ability at the moment. He wasn't taking aggressive grabs his hands were quite flat and thus he dropped a few he used to hold. He also struggles a bit when other players are in the drop zone. I don't think he's using his body enough at the moment to push them out of the way so he can put himself in the best spot. It's easier said than done but it has to happen to be an effective forward. But in my view, again for what it's worth I thought you could physically see his body language and confidence starting to come back after he held those two excellent contested marks. He's certainly got the package. I really felt his body language told a lot that his problem is above the shoulders. I also didn't realise it's 12 mths since he's played in the firsts. 12 months!! And we all get stuck into him so much. I really hope they give him a good 4 or 5 games now no matter what the output.

On body language. In the first quarter it really felt like all the players were very tentative and scared to make mistakes. This was actually mentioned by Goody in the post game pressie. He said they were being too cautious and he had to get them to take the game on. They noticeably did that as soon as they came out in the second quarter. It was interesting seeing the game day vid on the Club website with Goody's pre game address to players where he said I won't send out a message for your execution just take the game on. That's exactly what didn't happen in the first quarter. So really interesting to witness the body language and psychology live. I really like what I saw of Goody's game day addresses. The most inspiring I've seen him.

I reckon he is capable as well, just seems to lack confidence.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
