I usually take little notice of video highlight reels.  Funnily enough the players all look good in them.  But this is the first time I have been impressed -  there is something unusual here.

    That's not so because I reckon  about 50% were mids so that's why I stated that it wasn't the draft I watched  last night 

    FWIW I think the Dees have done very well with 2 X factor draftees plus our trade gets and the PSD plus Harley and maybe Brown will give us a lot of depth and new talent to develop quickly.

    Also can't wait for all our injured 2019 players plus the 2018 draft young uns to return and develop.

    very bullish about our forward line possibilities now. Plus Weid Oscar Spargo who have all developed bodies to play hard and tough footy at the top .

    A pretty good off season but as you say alot is riding on players recovery, full pre-seasons and some youngens being trialled in their 2nd/3rd & 4th years, especially up forward.

    The recruits so far look exciting but like all young fellas they will need a few years to find their feet at this level....IF they do.  The step up must be massive which is why a fair chunk don't make it.  Fingers crossed we've brought in some significant talent that are able to transition.

    Will be interesting to see how chunk goes in his now / old HF role this year as well, especially with a full pre-season in.

    Having Fritta &'Melk back should also improve things up forward.  Forward line, particularly the talls still a work in progress though at this stage it seems.  Can't be worse than this season though surely and we should see significant improvement.

    Looking forward to seeing what Langdon brings and lets hope we get Harley up and running in the 2nd half to add a little pedigree / magic into the mix.

    This is the first thing I thought of when I saw the latest highlights package revealed - Kouta changed the way the game was played in the early 90's, tall, athletic and flexible.

    But I will say, I have my doubts. Until then, all the best Luke, I hope you become our next Buddy or Kouta.

    I mentioned earlier in this thread that I'd seen the extended highlights of Jackson, Pickett too and if you have a look at them you must at least be a little more convinced than before. Also if you listen to the interview with Jackson, you will see he is keen to be here and loves Melbourne, the town.

    Sorry but i just have to post this again. It's ridiculous how insanely athletic he is for a 199cm tall. He's quick on his feet to recover and his follow up work is elite.

    If we can somehow turn him into a genuine key forward then we have an absolute winner.

    Hats off to the poster with the LJ midfield mail (apologies on forgetting who exactly: @Yokozuna?). 

    I had trust in Taylor, but that was when my opinion was swayed - we were obviously onto something big.

    But I think it's fair to forgive any earlier doubts - as we really were in the dark as to the available footage.

    I was in the Young / Kemp camp. I see Young developing into a Nick Haynes type & I'm a huge fan of Haynes. Something about Kemp to me suggests he'll be the type of player who changes games so he's the one I'm spewing we missed - especially now he's at Carlton. And I really wanted an athletic tall mid with breakaway speed who is also an aerial threat.

    Having said that I'm now firmly on the Jacko train (and the Kozzie caboose). We are overdue for another Jacko & we've done well with them in the past with both output & entertainment. Mark, Ricky & Allen all gave us plenty and Peter was an off-field star.

    I suspect had that latest highlights package of Jackson been more widely distributed earlier a lot of skeptics - myself included- would have been far more comfortable with using Pick 3 on him. What I love in that package is that he is a 360 degree mark. He takes them in front, leaping in from either side, over the top of packs, on the lead & standing in the goalsquare. And if we play him forward / mid. I might just have got my athletic tall mid with breakaway speed who is also an aerial threat after all.

    While you can't know what heights our two latest additions will eventually reach, I reckon they are both gonna be fun to watch. I predict a few user names on here will change

    Funny to compare him to Weid, he just looks more fleixble/dynamic in his movement and reading of the flight of the ball. Interested to see how he progresses.

    I wonder how he would go, and how oppositions would play him, if we tried the Pagan Paddock option, one on one Jackson from the goal square, with Pickett sprinting in from wide on the flank?

      From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

    • CASEY: Gold Coast

      Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

    • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

      The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
