Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I confess my total ignorance

what are the permutations here

so we bid

they match

then what

(I take it he’s in their academy or something ?)

if we nominate him, then yes, they have to match

pick 3 = 2234 points

they need 80% of points in order to 'match' the bid but i was under the assumption that as long as they could accumulate the points with 'extra' picks they had in second and third rounds in order to do so, as i'm sure sydney did when they matched our bid for mills before we took oliver (and thank the football gods they did so!)

however, my learned friends on demonland assure me that it's a case of they have to use points from their next available pick (pick 6 = 1751 points), as well as whatever else is required in order to be at 1787 points, which is what they'd need to match as the equivalent of pick 6's points less a 20% discount as an academy matching system

whole thing is a farce

True, but it means that GWS are likely to deal with us for the pick at some stage, probably late in the trade period when it’s clear as to aces they’re holding to do a swap of picks/players.

maybe

if you nominate a player i think it's cos you genuinely WANT him - we certainly would've taken both heeney and mills when we nominated them in consecutive years, but swans were always going to match

green is meant to be a very inside midfielder type, i believe?  we are not really in the market for one of those

neither are adelaide with both crouch bros, sloane as their core midfield trio, plus gibbs as well under a new coach

BUT if we do think he's the third best player in the draft - and there seems to be some love for that school of thought in some quarters - then perhaps we will nominate him if we have pick 3 cos we haven't split it

interesting times!

The issue for GWS  is that they  want two top end (elite) players in the draft and therefore need a pick before anyone bids on Green.  It's why they would need to get us to split pick 3 to guarantee they have that pick before they have to match a bid.  Pick 6 is obviously the starting point but they'd likely need another low end first roundish pick 15-20, unless they have a player we want that they're prepared to trade. If not they need they're going to have to trade out some quality and keep some picks in hand to pay for Green when a bid does come.

With their academy they're always going to have players coming through in coming years and can't go to far into deficit to match bids.

edit: Hawthorn will not give up pick 30 for Patton, he's likely to go for a fourth or fifth rounder so GWS can clear TPP room for Jeremy Cameron.  Even though he's a former first round pick after two knee recos I can't see someone giving up a first rounder for Bonar... Caldwell on the other hand.

So they match it how ? By giving up an equivalent range of picks to meet the points

so they’d have to surrender pick 6 and something else to nab him? Is that how it works? And they could pay overs? So we’d be boning them. Seems a [censored] move to do that (not to a team we dislike it wouldn’t be)

Josh Mahony says we are not done yet. GWS must be worried. If they really want Green but just cant justify the points needed if Melbourne pick him, as it would cost them so much, what then do they do?

I wonder if there is anything they could legitimately offer GCS to NOT pick Anderson with pick 2? Dees get Anderson, Green to GWS. It is the only scenario I can think of, to not pick Green if our coaches are quietly playing hardball.

For anyone interested here are the 2019 rules for drafting academy players. Similar rules apply for Father/Son

Academy Players RuleOn Thursday, 31 October 2019, by 2pm eligible clubs must lodge with the AFL a list of draft-eligible Academy Players it wishes to consider for inclusion on its Primary List or Rookie List. At the National Draft meeting in conjunction with Father-Son bidding nominations, each Club may “bid” for the player. If matched by the Academy Club, the Academy Club will forfeit one or more subsequent selections, to the value of the points required to match the bid. If the Academy Club declines to match the bid, the club with the successful bid uses the selection to secure the player.

Been big on Stephens for a while now.

I think a solid comparison is Isaac Smith for what you’d expect him to develop into.

Why go past Stephens if available.?  Genuine pace, lovely disposal, kicks a very good goal.

if he can be got at Number 3 I would be delighted

Who knows he may turn out to be one of the better player's of the draft, but he is not being talked about as a top 5 pick for the upcoming draft (yet).

Okay.. playing the game when do you tell GWS that you will bid on Green.

Mind game wise is it better for them to know and force them to deal or do you leave it unsaid.

Strikes me that it requires a player trade from GWS so no good waiting for the night and trading picks etc.

My recommendation is that we tell them Green is being actively considered...leaves wiggle room but forces GWS' hand.

Caveat.... I have no view as to whether Green is the next best thing after the two top picks but if he clearly is... let's go all out.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
