They will take the same approach as when Sydney offered an absurd contract for Franklin.  The contract will stay on the books even if the player is gone.  Franklin is taking up salary cap and a list spot until he's 37 if I recall.

sometimes the world is not fair... to others it's about winning.

MFC are shafted every which way.. (for example we should have had pick 2 this year)

Anyway some are content with mediocrity. Others after 55 odd years would like to see success.

If we were in Carltons position we’d all be frothing about this situation. 
The fact of the matter is that this is all the AFL’s doing. They gave Gold Coast too many concessions, too many draft picks that effectively made them not GAF about accepting something in the 2nd round offered from Carlton. 
Less concessions would have forced the Suns to work with Carlton but they opted to make Martins exit a drawn out and probably painful process for him and everyone involved.

True, though I kinda understand them wanting to draw a bit of a line in the sand sort of thing with Martin. They've been pillaged a lot and they wanted to play a bit of hardball for once. It's a bit moot though if they've got so much concessions that it doesn't mean they're losing out.

I would love the Dees to come out and play some funny buggers with Carlton by saying we have the cap space for Martin, hold onto a space on the list into the PSD as well. Apart from Martin would there be any PSD potentials for us?

It's really not. I think we'd be paying Ed Langdon something close to Martin's contract and there's still a gap between that and the deals for someone like Brad Hill that involve a top 10 pick.

Any other club would've been forced to accept Carlton's offer of a future 2nd and 3rd round picks and would've gone to work making them in to something they like. The Suns have so many list concessions they chose to ignore the reality of the system.

Except that future 2nd and 3rd rounders next year, will be like 3rd and 4th rounders and the Blues will also rise a bit on the ladder.

That is not a fair deal for Martin. If we had him we would want more. 

It is unfortunate for GC that principle will cost them and the Blues acted like predators.

The concessions soften the blow for GC.

Personally I hope the deal is a major bust for Carlton and I hope it affects the other players and that they all want more money.

I would love to see the bottom side next year do the same to Carlton for one of their better players.

Yes, I dislike Carlton more than any other club.

Cochrane is unpredictable and he extracted maximum value for O'Meara when he got obsessed with it.  He could easily do the same here and take a stand and redraft Martin.

They’ve just had too many walk outs to not make a stand. Both there captains last year. The blues were both complacent and predatory in there approach and the suns can’t put up w that either. So i hope the blues pay a price.

I found it strange that when the swans couldn’t land daniher, the news was all about how the swans let him down and how the dons wanted him more. But in THIS case none of that at all. if the blues wanted him they needed to pay the price... and they didn’t. for THAT they should pay the price.

I very much doubt Cochrane will play funny buggers with the AFL after being given the most generous of handouts.
 

The whole thing has probably been orchestrated this way. 

The way i see it.  If the club believes his addition to our squad will lead to sustained success over the next 5 years and its discussed with our leadership who agree as it will hit their hop pocket, then admin should then rearrange contracts and get him.  We know his price and if his talent is worth that price we pay it, if not we can still say in public we think that price is fine and we are keen to get him onboard, just annoy the Blues . His contract over 5 years is not huge once you take care of the first year,

Question: if we took him and he refused to play, would it be breach of contract and we wouldn’t have to pay the money; and would the amount still be counted in the salary cap after the first year?

I cannot believe people still want to draft this bloke. I would rather have a shot at Picket than a bloke that threw in the towel last year and played out the season in the NEAFL. His output overall does not warrant $600 -$650 K per season and if Carlton think it does they are delusional. The bloke is a bust.

Agreed. But to be clear I didn’t mean his contract size I meant the blues offer to GC. I hope they don’t get rewarded for lowballing. My personal feeling about a Martin is that he will be a gun at the blues and worth every cent.
