Round 5 Non-MFC Games

Today’s result makes me even more disgusted with our performance last week. We are our own worst enemy.

From 4th to 13th with a woeful percentage. Yes it’s only round 5, but gees we are a pathetically infuriating side and I’m sick of copping [censored] from everyone about being a Melbourne supporter.

Yes it does. Our Attitude as a club is not good enough todays game is a perfect example of what i am saying.

We kicked the first 3 goals last week and then killed ourselves before surrender.

Yes we have the talent to beat Whorethorn, but our WORK ETHIC stinks bad

Yes, but by that same argument, so is Hawthorns.

Jaded you know business on a few levels, you may even run your own ship.

The MFC still does not have high enough standards that are demanded as a core.

We can hit that level, but it’s still a highlight and a shock. We don’t demand it weekly.

Whorethorn have won flags in every decade since 1961

You can do better than that ‘39

Have a read of the Hawthorn boards tonight and you’ll see similar comments to what we’ve been reading/posting all week.  They blew the game today in the first half and were lucky to only be down by ten goals.  The final score line flattered their performance immensely and only turned in their favour when they KOd Higgins and   EVW.  Simply put, they didn’t show up to play.

My point is though, that is not the Hawthorn we played last week.  Last week they were switched on, confident, hard running and highly accountable.

Much like the Nth of the first half were not the same nth we played two weeks ago.

This season, with the comp as even as it is in the opening rounds, if you’re not switched on and ready to play, you lose.

Ok. Fair point. But over many years, for Whorethorn to play like that is a massive rarity.

For the MFC it is expected by most outsiders, a 4 Quarter effort for us is the rarity.

Which is what must be changed, i now have some doubts Goodwin will do that, but he can still make that choice.

btw

What Whorethorn supporters say on their website tonight is mere comedy.

They have been arrogant for so long, it good to get hit occasionally

Agree it will be a disgrace if nth beat hawthorn this week. That will just show how our performance last week was disgraceful

Yet we beat Norf.  After they got off to a great start.

Weird season.

You can hate a club and still admire them. I was reminded of this as I watched Geelong against Port Adelaide. Up against it injury wise but won through great commitment to a game plan. And a commitment to a cause that didn't deviate. Dare I say, I wish we had a Duckwood in our team.

Today's result doesn't say much about our performance last week. It says more about the competition.

Carlton and St Kilda are bottom 4 sides but pushed the top 2 sides on the ladder. More than half the league has a 3-2 record. If we win, only percentage will separate 3rd and 13th.

Hawthorn didn't play their best today and got spanked. Same deal with us last week. Same deal with North the week before. If you don't play at 100% intensity each week, you risk being beaten by any opponent.

I watched the second half of Lions vs Suns and found it a surprisingly entertaining game. This week Brisbane definitely weren’t lacking in effort, just fluency in moving the ball. So many terribly low percentage choices like a hoof forward or kick off the ground. Other than last week’s pasting they’ve looked to me like a side only 1% off the pace. 0-5 seems unjust - that’s how it is in a pretty even competition I suppose.

Quite nauseating to see and hear James Hird narrate the pre-game 'tribute'.  Couldn't tell if it was shown at the game or just to the TV audience.

It seemed more about him and his connection to the ANZAC day game than those the day is commemorating.

I get the AFL wants to bring him back into the fold but gobsmacked this day was chosen to showcase him.

Dumb question but what did we get for howe?

Picks 29 and 50 plus Ben Kennedy (now delisted)... we gave up Toumpas to Port

Not a stupid trade at the time given that Howe wanted to move but in hindsight we lost badly

Wonder what we got for Dunn. Wouldn’t mind him in our back line

Dunn and pick 51 for the pick that got Hannan.

It was reported at the time that it was a salary dump to make room for the unexpected trade of Jordan Lewis.

So Dunn and 51 for Hannan and $$$ for Lewis.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
