Are we getting complacent?

Looking at our end of year trading, and the draft tonight, I get the over whelming impression that we have decided we have a premiership list and all we need to do is to wait and it will mature into a champion team. And by the way, we can give away a couple of first round picks who are not only potential champions, but provide us with experience and leadership, something which over the last couple of years we have desperately needed in close crucial games which we usually lose. 

I really could not understand tonight’s trading. We clearly prefer smaller fast runners, when what I think we need is more physical strength a la a David Neitz. Instead we go for smalls, or lightly built forwards. 

I suspect we will go backwards in 2018 - unfortunately!

You always go best available.  As soon as you draft for needs, you pass on Pavlich because you already have Richardson.  I see nothing in common with our draftees other than reputed attitude; this tells me they were deemed to be the best available players to execute our gameplan.

There was nothing complacent about trading in Lever either- it was in fact quite aggressive, almost the polar opposite of complacent.

I too would have loved to have drafted David Neitz tonight... but unfortunately, there were no Neitas available.

Surely you're not serious with this post...

We trade in Lever who was the pick of the trade period, seen as a future captain at Adelaide. 3 years in the system so more leadership straight up in 2018 than any draft pick.

Plus it was a midfielders draft with no quality talls at the top end.

If we get one player out of this 4 it will be a bonus. With Lever we already have one...

You draft for best available, trade for needs.

We traded in quality and leadership...

A clear run with injury and we are a definite top 4 chance...forget about going backwards.

I'm not sure where you get the "we need a David Nietz" idea. We have a plethora of physical talls, having traded away Watts (probably the least physical of what we had at the end of the season) we have traded in Lever which allows TMac to be a strong forward. We also have Weids developing and Pederson who admittedly is getting the end of his career but is strangely improving.

As for being complacent, I think we've tried to address most of the on-field deficiencies in our team (defence being a big one). The biggest thing we have to find a way of addressing is the mental side, and that's not really something trading/drafting can do much for apart from maybe trading in experience (like Lewis).

lol you do realize Richmond just won a flag with no david neitz type but 1 forward in riewoldt and a heap of quick smalls, and it all comes down to a bit of luck where would we have finished if we had Richmond’s luck with injuries, if Jesse and gawn stay on the park, if viney and jones play all 22 games if we didn’t have the brain fades from Lewis and co, not only do we make the 8 but pushing for top 4 imo

if you look at drafts in isolation you are making a grave mistake. You build a list over many draft & trade periods.

Trading away 2 first round picks is not a sign of complacency, rather the opposite, incredible agression, suggesting we want success sooner rather than later.  Although I loved Jack Watts, I have no problem with the clubs decisions this trade and draft period and after feeling incredibly deflated after round 23 I am finally feeling upbeat about 2018.

Here is why I love this trade and draft period.

1.  We got Lever.  You can stop reading here.  The get of the draft period

2.  We no longer have to draft ‘messiahs’ who will instantly fix our lot.  We can draft some ‘developing talent’ and let them..develop.  It has been the big problem over the last 5 or so years, that young players have not been afforded space and time to develop.  Now they can.

3.  We have heaps of upside in guys already on our list, who should keep developing.  Maynard, AVB, Petracca, Oliver, Wieds, Hogan, the Mac brothers, stretch, JKH, Kent, etc etc etc.  if only half of this group improves, all will be well.

4.  It looks like we had a solid shopping list, and are rewarding players who are players and prepared to work for it.  No flat track bullies here, but guys who are competitive and have had to show something to get here.

5.  I think our list looks better after the draft and trade than before.  There is more competition on spots back, middle and forward.  We also have a few master-apprentice opportunities emerging in each line.

6.  I think we are more flexible and have more options.  I think we also may see a few players shifting roles to fit into the structure better.

7.  Collingwood got a kid with a poor ticker.  Fits the mould for the club. (Just a bonus!)

I give us a fairly high rating for this period, but the proof will be in the pudding.

I couldn't believe they took this risk...of all clubs, they can't afford this one to go wrong.

The kid is a gun, but will he reach his potential?

Some of the McGuire decisions post premiership have been bewildering to say the least.

...and yes I know he's not responsible for picking kids at the draft but his philosophy does filter down.

I was surprised he didn't pick Gubby as the new CEO, his 12 months would be up soon...

Exactly... and if you ever needed a Neita comparison, there it is... he spent time in the back line before moving to become our most successful forward.
