Footnote - not sure why Goodwin/Mahoney keep repeating that Goodwin has a strong relationship with 'X' player...  If that is said too often some may come to doubt it...

Good article, and as you say, looks like we will have some answers soon on a number of players.

In regards to this last bit - I can recall Jesse talking about how great the club had been to him this year and was very thankful for the support.  You would assume Goodwin would have been a major part of that.  I know they keep trotting the line out, but in this case I believe it.

I'm feeling particularly uneasy about this upcoming trade period. It's either going to go very well or blow up spectacularly in our face.

Just can't see it being a meh scenario.

I won't be surprised if Hogan leaves. Why would I be? I am a melbourne member and am used to these sorts of things. I will however be extremely sad. I am excited by the likes of him, trac, Brayshaw, Viney and others forming the nucleus of a side for a long time.

my odds of him leaving, 65%....

(hope I am wrong).

I'm interested in how exactly you calculated that figure?

This hand wringing over Hogan is terrible, get a grip guys.

Not sure why. Lever is the biggest name to come to the club in a long time. Unless Jesse puts in a request to leave, I can't see how it can blow up spectacularly.

Lever in and Watts out is a big change. Not sure I'd say it's a great result or a bad result but it's something. It's a big name coming and going.

After that I think we are talking fringe players out and fringe players in. I'm nervous someone else may leave but that's most trade periods I guess.

Mate, if you're relying solely on an Internet forum to excite you I suggest you start looking for alternatives.

Players sign contracts and then for some strange reason they want to leave. Gibbs the same at Carlton.

mcCarthy the same from GWS TO FREO. Regardless of any circumstances.

Easy.  You sign a mid-length contract which is heavily front-ended, take the cash in the first year or two then ditch the club before you have to play for less at the end.

Hearing Balic will be doing a tour of the club within the next week or so, he has some fairly serious off field issues but also has some talent so potentially a value pick

I'm going to need some pronunciation advice with Blicavs, Balic and Kolodjashnij rumoured to be on our radar. And is it Lev-er or Levar?

He has been inconsistent for 7 years and came back out of shape at the start of season

And then he was bloody good until he injured his hammy. In fact, he was a super important player for us after Gawn went down.

Dustin Martin is known as a poor trainer. Some of his teammates joke than he can't bench more than 90 kgs, yet he can push off a rhino with one hand at full tilt.

Watts' performances over the past two years have actually been very good.

What he did, or failed to do, 2 plus years ago is irrelevant - in fact, it's irrelevant for every current player in the competition.

First and third paras are correct. Like Gawn, he clearly struggled after doing his hammy. Gawn was an ordinary ruckman with little presence around the ground after his hammy. In the last game, Grundy dominated the game.  Prior to the injury Watts showed us how good he can be when fit and the team playing well.  After his injury, Watts may have been no better than his teammates but he was certainly no worse.  Very disappointed how this is playing out.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
