Geez imagine if GWS lose Kelly and shiel this year, they would be no chance for a flag and go backwards pretty quickly

Injuries have had a impact for GWS,  I have a theory and I've been saying it that they won't win a premiership in the next 4 to 5 years,  we know that kids that are spoilt and given everything quite often don't succeed because they have been handed everything on a platter.

Interesting if Stringer becomes Cats priority. Devon Smith still looks on the way out at GWS, and can't see Geelong getting both, wonder we can steal in there?

He would be a great get, J. But being a Falcon's boy, surely Geelong would have the inside running at getting him on reduced dollars?

Do you really think Schache would cost more in picks than Lever?

Potentially yes, given he is contracted the Lions will be able to drive a much harder deal. I'm not saying he's worth more, but with Lever is able to say he's going to walk anyway, just get the best deal while someone will have to go to the Lions with a deal they can't refuse.

If it worked, I'd still think we'd have to send pick 14 and a 2nd to Adelaide, while pick 10 on it's own would be enough for Schache.

Doubt Geelong will have the currency to get both though, even if they find the $. They have already brought in a lot of mature players for good picks over the last couple of years. If they went after both (and maybe Ablett) then they'll require this years and next years 1st and probably more, and they'll end up with a massive gap in their playing list - all top end, no middle or developing tier. Might get them close over the next year or 2 but then could fall away horribly with no young talent coming through.

Its more a balance or 'meet you halfway' kind of thing rather than coddling/over-discipline. Kids that are given nothing but an 'old school' hard ass authoritarian one size fits all coaching approach with strict discipline, either end up alienated or want out, or turn into assholes and a club atmosphere becomes divided. There's a reason Pagan and Rocket reached their expiry date. Like all things in life, moderation and nuance.

Don't think that will get either of those deals done.

Lack of currency will hurt as they don't have a 1st rnd pick.  Their picks: 20, 34, 52. They might get some OK FA compensation picks from the AFL if Motop or Menzel go.

I don't think they have taken a 1st round pick to the draft since 2014 so doubt the AFL will let them use their 2018 pick.

Essendon are reported to be making a big play for Stringer so it will be interesting to see how it all plays out and where it leaves Ablett...

With the list structure and talent problems you've mentioned, Geelong could slide down the ladder fairly rapidly!  Win the SS games and struggle elsewhere.  Chris can join Brad in the lower half of the ladder...

I know he is contracted but I wouldn`t be surprised if we shop Weed around if the right offers come around.

Nor I.

Maybe in a ...yeah... what are we talking about ...  to and fro ...within other bartering.

He might leave in an indirect fashion of sorts.

Definitely not an 'untouchable'

Agree. If the Football Dept wake up and realise that Tom Mac is a better forward than backman, Weed will be spending another year at Casey. And if he doesn't start dominating at that level next year, his currency will be severely diminished.

Yep agree entirely. I also feel the reason Frosty re-signed was as a result of knowing that Lever will actually take TMacs spot in the backline, not Frostys, TMac will be permanent forward. Weed then becomes surplus to requirements and a trade may nett us a decent mid with pace which is what we need more than anything.

I don't think Shache has done anything much greater than weideman but some are suggesting he's an absolute jet and will demand first rounders.

Based on that logic, should we be looking for a similar value to use on someone like Gaff?

Collingwood need tall forwards to help out Moore, and the name fits...Personally I wouldn't want to lose Weideman but it may be a way to trade for more picks to use for a midfielder and/or Lever...

If Giants are worried that Mumford may be done, Goldstein would make a whole lot of sense for them. Part of a potential Kelly deal?

Could the Dogs also be in the market for Goldy due to Tom Boyds situation?

I would not want to trade Weids unless he a) demands to leave, and b) there is a significant upside offer on the table for us.  Weid is a good young player that is still developing.  OK, he is not yet a 'great', or a 'superstar' - but your footy team rarely has more than a few of those in it.  Weids is developing nicely, showed plenty in a few games at VFL level this year, and did OK (again not great) in the AFL.  I think we will see a big step up at VFL level next year, with some AFL games - and in 2019 he will be a solid (sometimes spectacular) contributor to our forward line at AFL level.  Worth hanging on to, unless something significant is on offer.  A required player, but not 'untouchable' for mine.

The Weid isn't worth much now as trade bait. With a big preseason he might come on next year or in 2019 (remember he's still very young) and be worth much to the team, either as a future MFC kpf or even in a trade. If he doesn't come on next year or in 2019 he won't be worth much in a trade and we're back to where we are now.

My point is he's on our list and its worth continuing the development to see what becomes. Give him the time and development a tall, young player needs. There's a reason why TViney, Taylor and Roos wanted him.

But do we need him? If we get Lever and TMac plays permanent forward (where he played the best footy of his career to date), Weid won`t get much of a look in unless of a)injuries or b) Watts leaves.

We need outside pace and class in the midfield ASAP....considering his potential, Weid might get us someone good.

More likely to happen than for the Weid to leave imo

Interesting to read the thoughts on Weid here. Ive said it before but I reckon we go for broke now....trading Weid would be a massive risk, but worth it IF the upside was worth it. Ive also been intruiged by how well the Tiges have done and indeed the doggies did last year with a smaller, high pressure fwd line. the footy dept have got some massive decisions to make this off season.....decisions that I suspect will polarise us. Hopefully we make the right calls.....this could be the summer that defines our next few years.

I dont think Weid would attract much interest ATM as he has barely played and of those times he has shown areas requiring more improvements (ie: contested marking, reading play, etc).

Improving his body size would be a good start.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
