Why? Because they haven't played finals in last 10 years

The issue goes far deeper than that I am afraid.  The rhetorical question is based on the fact that they appear to be a football club in name only.  They have been surpassed by GWS who entered the competition after them.  Let's not forget that the AFL's preferred option at the time was to relocate North Melb.

As pointed out above, regardless of the code, no notable sporting franchise has succeeded up there.

never really understood the footy-speak regarding 'relevance'.  are they irrelevant? relevant to what?

we are discussing them right now so I guess not?!

anyway.... nice guy Rocket but he was a poor appointment and a man who lost the passion to coach.  they need a young coach/mentor and they need to create a new identity/enable player power.  they have lots of talent, just need to blend it

Deliberately ironic? Don't you mean "No, the Gold Coast Suns is one football team"?

Defeats your point otherwise.

Back on topic...I understand Eade getting the chop, but surely questions also have to be asked about the competence of the Board who chose him in the first place.

At the time Eade clocked on the the board were as candid to acknowledge he (Rocket) had inherited a "shlt sandwich".

Poor ol' Rod just became 'quilton'

What a mess. Got to wonder how they can dig themselves out of it. Eade was handed a bucket of [inevitable failure] to eat almost as big as the one Pagan was passed at Carlton in 2002. In both cases, something in the players' culture is clearly wrong. That Gold Coast had a collection of high picks on their list just brought pressure without much real talent being displayed.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Ablett now.

IF Ablett greatly disliked Eade and his superstardom status was dividing the player group against Eade, then maybe the change will be transformative and Ablett stays, the club unites, and there is huge improvement.

OR the club recognises that it needs to rebuild with new talent and that Ablett is no great help, and becomes inclined to accept a more limited offer from Geelong, just to get his salary off the books and remove the divisive influence.

Also, "We are the mighty Gold Coast Suns, we something something can't remember..."

Carlton were a mess but arguably Pagan's coaching methods were outdated and he couldn't get the players onside. I reckon Eade is likely on that same side of the ledger and it will be interesting to see what player movements are at the end of the season or what comes out of the club in terms of player commentary. When Neeld left there was a collective sight of relief and I get the impression GC will be the same.

terrible recruiting by scot clayton who was so overatted when appointed it's not funny.

He favored lightly built skillful,  nice athletic  types . GWS went with strongly built competitive beasts as their no 1 criteria.

They revolutionised they way other clubs now recruit . It also helped they had even more handouts than GC from a draft perspective and used all the pre selection , points / zone  /academy system perfectly

It's unbelievable and unforgiveable considering they were introduced before GWS and have achieved nothing in that time. Compare them to GWS and they have just gotten it so wrong. There needs to be another overhaul from the board, committee, coaches etc.

Sounds a bit like our last decade prior to Jackson/Roos.

Club told Rocket last night he wouldn't be getting a contract for next year, but wanted him to coach the last 3 games. He told the club to shove it up their arse.

Really don't know why they wouldn't wait until the end of the season to tell him that. What a dumb club.

Can understand the decision but I do think that Rocket was very unlucky with injuries over the last couple of years - horrific run last year, not much better this year.  Day didn't even get on the park, Lynch hasn't been fully fit, Ablett in and out,  May out a few times,  Barlow was playing good footy before the leg injury, Rischitelli just back from a long term knee.  Made it difficult for him.

I know there is talk about John Barker but if Brett Ratten isn't their no.1 target of those that aren't senior coaches at the moment, I'd be really surprised.  Did a good job at Carlton and has had a few years under the best coach in the league at Hawthorn.

As for Ablett, they should just let him go to Geelong.  Watched him closely in the last quarter on the weekend.  Skirted around the packs getting the easy ball (he's talented enough to get 30 even when he's in cruise control) and doesn't want to be there.  They need to wash their hands of him, whilst still playing a bit of hard ball with Geelong.

In the past, clubs wanted to get started early to enable a new coach and his team to be in place to help with list management issues. They also wanted to get the "best available" before other clubs in need of a new coach pinched their choice from under their nose. But I seem to recall there's a new rule (or perhaps it's just a gentleman's agreement) that clubs will not talk to assistant coaches until their season is complete. Given that the most desirable assistant coaches often work for teams in finals contention, that doesn't leave much time to get a new coach appointed before the decisions for the next year are needed.

And if Brett Ratten is a potential appointee, his season could be over in 3 weeks time.

Maybe to get ahead of other teams potentially in the hunt for new coach in 2018? If they started looking now on the quiet, Rocket would find out in 10 mins and would make for a situation worse than it currently is. Also, there may be legal contractual obligations that require notice to be given.

Edit. What La Dee-vina said ;)

North and Collingwood could swap coaches, saving money and effort to select a coach and providing certainty and stability at the same time!

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
