Fantastic from Brayshaw ... but very impressive from JKH. He just needs to learn to do it at senior level, he's got to be more than one of those players who stars in the lower leagues but never makes the step up.

Best Players:

How did we win this? I had to go at 3 quarter time (I had a 20 km bike ride home into the wind) and yes we were a point down but we were kicking into 25 km/hr wind in the last. Extraordinary effort given we had lost Joel Smith and Spenser by half time. And we just hadn't looked good all day, save for 15 minutes in the 3rd. Gus stood out, Stretch and JKH battled hard. What I noted was that players had very little time and space to get ball and execute, not sure whether this was due to a smaller ground or the wind bottling all play to one area? Watching tonight's AFL match on TV and they appear to have twice the space and time to deliver. Totally different games to watch and for players to play I think. A player with some pace and skill but no real physical advantages in height would likely perform better in AFL than VFL.

Of the Casey guys I liked Gent, Fritsch and number 22 Lok looks to have some potential.

"Angus Brayshaw was brilliant for the Demons, showing the flare which fans have come to expect from the young star. He tackled with strength and hunted the ball for 34 disposals, standing up when required at the death."

Great to hear Brayshaw had a strong game and stood up when needed at the end. Not great to hear Joel Smith has likely done his ACL.

Could I start the day by welcoming Casey's neighbour Frankston Dolphins back into the fold?

They will resume competition in 2018 and be joined by North Melbourne which has severed ties with Werribee and field a stand alone VFL team.

Casey Demons 3.3.21 lead Sandringham 3.2.20

Will that bring it up to an even number or do we still have to suffer byes?

Joel Smith flew as high as his dad.  Bad landing, serious leg injury, off on stretcher :(

Pretty sure Joel Smith has done a serious knee injury, probably an ACL. Poor bugger has not had any luck this season

FMD in fact FMY

The curse continues. Was Norm a non favored great uncle of does he have some other reason to punish Joel so?

It sure does. Rational thinking suggests that Braysh should be held out as long as possible as he's only been back a short time... But Goody has brought in some really out-of-nowhere guys... Hannan early in the year, JKH the second time... And usually they work.

If he gets picked, I'll be super pumped.

It's about time rational thinking held up...

...and no they usually haven't worked. Hogan struggled, Max has struggled, Smith struggled, JKH was not up to it & anyone with an once of insight can see that Viney has no power in his foot at the moment and is struggling.

Leave Brayshaw at Casey for another game or 2 and if he holds his form & we look a chance at finals then maybe bring him back for the last game...maybe.

Look back to the start of this season & Brayshaw struggled, really struggled. He needs more time, we've rushed too many back into the AFL team too early.

You've missed the thrust of my post. You can't claim Hogan and Gawn were surprise selections. One's our best KP forward, and one's the reigning AA ruckman. (BTW, Hogan was building nicely before he got hurt again, and Max was almost best on against GWS... got 2 votes on MMM)

My post suggested that Goody has picked guys who you don't see coming... Gawn and Hogan's medical situations were all over the press before they were brought back, and noone (except you) are suggesting they were mistakes. Viney came back in and had 10+ touches in his first quarter back and looked sensational as well. All 3 are best 22 every day of the week and if they can give you 4 quarters, you play them.

Hannan in round 1 was one noone saw coming. Huge success. Hibberd played one game in the VFL and was put straight into 22 after that and has been amazing.

JKH noone expected the first time. The second time he was brought in was unexpected too, but played well. Other ins were more forced than anything... Wagner, Smith, Trengove... These guys only got shots because our injury list was huge and we were in trouble and needing guys who knew our setup from defence. You can't say they were mistakes when the cupboard was bare. You play what you have.

Add to the above, Melksham could have spent more time out of the side earlier in the year. Goody stuck with him and it's paid off. Maynard as well... unusual selection. Liked his game.

I'll give you one unexpected selection that didn't work. Wiedeman.

Anyway. It's all academic. You reckon Brayshaw has to be kept out. I hope Goody doesn't feel the same way. I'm just as much about getting games and confidence into kids as I am about making finals. Playing Pedo this weekend I was 50/50 on... I'm ok playing Weed even if he doesn't do too much. He's going to be hugely important. Same thing with Braysh. It's not like we're playing a rookie just to see what they've got. Both are massive assets for the club going forward. Goody's got his eye on the prize. And he's cleverer than us. Even just picking Braysh is a great thing for the club.

JKH is just not up to AFL level footy, Good VFL player nothing more!

Way too early to call. Has gone from playing small forward to a midfielder and excelled at VFL level. A big step. Lets give him a little more time for the core of his body to mature and not get bumped off the ball so easily at AFL level

No, you've missed the thrust of your own post 'Dappa' and that's about selecting Brayshaw this week.

I suggest this would not be a great idea and have given examples of other players brought in too early...I think we have for want of a better word panicked at the selection table this season. We haven't shown any faith in our depth players and rushed the "stars" in too early.

The selection of Hannan has nothing to do with selecting Brayshaw. Brayshaw is a known and has shown he can play at the level but given his history he needs time.

Hannan was a left field selection, Brayshaw would be in my mind a dumb selection.

Of course this is just my opinion and the selectors may go with him and he may have a blinder.

Trouble is they can't...Jack has given 1 quarter and struggled since.

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
