I dont know but it seems that the teams are known by the industry generally on a Thursday and the AFL machine likes its news to include this sort of stuff. I suspect the teams are put in to AFL on Thursday morning or late Wednesday and possibly shared confidentially. Does anyone know if this happens?

I disagree that there is any advantage of disclosure or non disclosure - can you please clarify what the advantage is from your perspective @sue. All AFL clubs plan for a myriad of options - and 12 hours early notice would mean sfa.

Given the playing conditions, the fact the Roos had a pretty much full strength team on board, their familiarity with the ground and the fact that they were coming off a strong performance the week before, the loss was probably not as surprising as many seem to think.

Depends if Hannan is injured or not, he has enough credits in the bank.

I would say Hogan, Trengove and JKH for Jones, Vince and Maynard.  Not sure they will replace Hogan with another key forward. Having said all that, I wouldn't be surprised if Watts is dropped either.

If they have to plan for a "myriad" of options, I agree that removing one is no great advantage.  But there is not a myriad, just a few, particularly when you name who is in.  For example, unless there is a rumour that Gawn is injured, they will not plan on how to take on Spencer.  But if you name a new bloke, I bet they do a quick review of everything they can find out about him.  On the other hand, if you argue that there are many options to consider, then an extra 12 hours for planning is a help to the opponent.

As to the hairy-chested 'we are masters of our own destiny, we can tell them the truth' argument, I suppose we'd be happy then for the phone between Goodwin and the bench to be on open mike?

Yep. As horrible as i can remember? Perhaps not but my memory is not what it was.

The two losses most horrible losses this year are the last game and the Freo game. Both times we were in positions to smash them and failed to deliver.

I hear what you're saying, and I see a distinct difference between detailing strategy vs naming individuals. There are no unknown quantities re personnel - however its up to the individual players from opposing teams to do their due diligence - not just the coaches feeding them info.
