The one about the Melbourne supporter who mistook the Michael Jordan meme as being something racist about Oliver was the best.

We have our fair share of nuffies.

Jason Dunstall had a little rant last night about this.  Reckoned that, as ANB had taken his 30 seconds before dishing off to Lewis, that Lewis should not have been allowed another 30 seconds.  Was moaning that it was blatant abuse of the rules to run down the clock, and that the Carlton supporters would not have liked it!!

Thankfully, Browny got stuck into him and told him he was being a complete Boof Head, and that what ANB & Lewis did was smart play, using the rules to their advantage.

I usually think Jason has some good things to say.  But that was just dumb!  Could have mistaken him for just another pathetic Blues supporter!

I also don't mind Dunstall but I couldn't believe what was coming out of his mouth. Brown was spot on. The onus is on the defending side to man up. I can't recall the last fime we saw a similar occurrence because teams do exactly that. They man up.

Dunstall was sounding very archaic trying to claim it was against the spirit of the game. It was clever play. End of story.

While players have 30 seconds, if umpires think they are running down the clock they can call play on before the 30 seconds is up.  It was pretty obvious what ANB and Lewis were doing but we got away with it.

It would take a brave umpire to call play-on in such a tight game in the last minute but I think they will be be reminded of the rule at their weekly meetings.

That aside it was a delight to hear the siren.  That is 3 recent games we have won from being aware and clever in the last minutes of play.

Edit:  part in itallics.

Very true!  And, I think Jordie alluded to this in his Press Conference yesterday.  Said he was keeping an eye on the count down clock and also the Umpie.  Said he was reasonably confident he'd be okay, as the Umpie also was watching the clock.  But, he said, he made sure he went well back from the man on the mark, just in case the Umpie called "play on".  So, Jordie was well aware of the Umpie's right to call play on if he deemed it to be deliberate play on.  It was, effectively, a gamble on Jordie's part, but a shrewd one that paid off.  Well done, Jordie!

As Brown said Carlton should've manned him up. No need to stuff around with the rules even more.

Like Simon Eishold all those years ago, ANB certainly never looked as if he wanted to take the shot at goal, but in this. case cooler heads prevailed.

That was good use (not abuse) of a rule.  I guess Knee Jerk Gil will make a change asap - of course only to be implemented very selectively.

If it was Like Hodge it would have been "footy smarts". Just like Riewoldt calling for the ball and winning a 50m penalty was "footy smarts". They don't like us and where we are heading......but I don't mind at all ?

there was no gamble. it was safe as houses, unless an umpire wants to not follow the rules of the game.

An easy change to stop this would be to allow one shot on goal, and if passed to a marking player, they are deemed marks in general play and you get the standard 7 seconds, meaning you can compose yourself a little bit, but you have to move it on.

Heaps of Carlton supporters have been moaning about this too. How about just manning up, Carlton? That would have forced ANB to have the shot. It's not our fault, or the fault of the rules, that your players weren't concentrating.

So true. It matters sweet f all to have possession for most of the game if you're not scoring and your opponent is.

Hmm.  Not sure about that BR.  From Jordie's Presser, I got the clear implication from him that he thought there was a chance the Umps would, indeed, deem the ploy to be blatant time wasting and hence give him a hurry along.  That's why he backed further away from the man on the mark than he'd usually do as insurance, just in case the Umpie called "play on"...

Mmmm, but that wouldn't suit the narrative that Bolton is a genius coach.

Lewis ducked, it was the right call

Your allowed to attempt to evade a tackler. He didn't duck front on into the tackle trying to draw high contact so it was actually the wrong call. (Although Lewis was too slow had two easy options in front of him )

Yes, i heard that as well. Wouldn't be surprised to hear "play on" now if at that sort of time into the last couple of minutes, someone does the same thing.:lol::lol:

Elliot did the exact same thing as ANB in the Collingwood game took his 30'second then spotted up a player 20 m closer to goal, no mention of anything wrong there just because there wasn't 1 min left.

loved how Gibbs was lining up for goal in the 3rd quarter made such an effort to use his whole 30 he didn't take his eye of the scoreboard, of course he missed the shot.

just watching again that play where carlscum got the ball over the back and jetta/frost just cleaned it up, it got me thinking we should really have had another spare player back to give us a numerical advantage. it very nearly cost us the game. jetta was great but kudos to frost for backing him up and that run past of frosty to just evade the tackler was worthy of praise too

Perhaps if "someone" wasn't on the bloody phone for the last two minutes of the contest he might have been able to see the FACT that Lewis, the Carlton Nemesis was by himself.

That was bizarre. He continued to sit there on the phone as Lewis counted down the game. What brilliant strategical move was he planning to make at that point?

Given his proximity to the players, you'd think he could've instructed his players to man up.

Maybe he was ordering dinner?

Then it becomes arbitrary, if a player miskicks the ball and a teammate marks it 20 metres out, does he get the 30 or 7 seconds. It could be a pack mark in the goal square or a mark in the opposite pocket of it's a kick across goal, who decides which it is and on what basis.  Imagine if a player in a grand final marks the miskick and is winded and the umpire deems it to be a 7 seconder and he has to play on without the time to steady.

Agree totally, Dante.  Only logical solution is to leave the rule as it is.  If players are smart enough to occasionally use it to their advantage, good luck to them...!

I didn't think it was obvious at all what they were doing.

ANB looked set to take the kick, so much so that nobody bothered manning up Lewis.

I didn't see it coming and neither did most people at the ground. For all the umps knew, Lewis was telling ANB to settle and take the kick.

It's not until you see it close up on TV and you can see him peering around that you think he might pass it off.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los
