Garland, Lange added to coaching panel

Congratulations to Col.  It must be great to have a meaningful role at the Dees while recovering.

Article doesn't say how long for.  Not sure what it means for his playing career as he is contracted to end of 2018 and will turn 30 early next year.

Whether he plays on or not, I'm delighted the club is helping him build career options for life after football whenever that may be.  Another sign we are much more professional in developing our players on and off the field.

Well done to the Club and Col.

Have always loved Col and his love for the Dees.

Fair point, but he's always seemed like a pretty switched on and driven guy. Could make a good coach.

Col won't be on the list next year.

Just thinking out loud.

Could maybe we see Col retire from AFL...but 'recruited' by Casey to keep him 'local' and allow him a footy gig whilst learning his ropes ?

Congrats to him. He's a smart guy so hopefully he develops into a good coach.

This likely means he'll retire as a player and move into coaching you'd think.

If he retires, does he get paid out the final year of his contract?

If not, why would he?

I'd say they'll arrange some sort of payout for the final year. As some have said, it would be like the equivalent of a golden handshake and still captured under our TPP but at a reduced amount compared to his full final salary.

Having said that, it'll be his decision to play on (or attempt too), turning 30 next year he might see the writing on the wall and know he's a long way down the list for spots so may retire and focus on coaching. Either way I love how the club has got him involved while out for the year, he's always come across as pretty knowledgeable and level-headed.

Funnily enough Dunn is in the same role at Collingwood and was doing it whilst playing. I'd assume that Garland will play out his contract as he is on $0 next year and as we have seen this year, having some depth down back is needed.

I've had the privilege  of speaking to Col at a number of functions. His attention to detail is off the charts. I asked him a question about a player he had played against once (not even his direct opponent) before he was in the afl. The detail he gave amazed me. Wouldn't be surprised if he has something along the lines of a photographic memory.

Let's hope he can't recall every bad on field decision.

Good appointment though.

He definitely has the brains for understanding football, always has. In that regard he has always been good. He is just not able to execute it on game days, he has neither the skills nor the intensity required to play the game the way it is played now (this is no slight or negative shot at Col - he has played 141 games at the highest level, and survived what can only be described as the most turbulent period in the entirety of the MFC's existence).

Col has gotten the most out of his footballing talent (and then some), but he is simply not up to AFL standard anymore. He's not the only one that is also on our list.

Col got three years because the FD saw something in him, the same FD we are all gushing over for the development of our new players. I reckon it says more about the posters than Judys' ability.

I for one would like to have seen him play instead of Oscar for a few games this year if he had been available.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
