Oliver in a state side as a 19yr old.

How good is this kid going to be once he hits his prime?

I still say Brownlow medallist, once the umpiring world can think fast enough to process how fast he gathers/disposes of the ball in traffic.

Not the best player stereotype going around but arguably the best small forward neutraliser is Neville Jetta. Small forwards are becoming very dominant in the modern game but effective midget stoppers are being ignored when kudos are handed out.

Given the AFL's ability to find a way to create something to promote out of nothing, I'm amazed that at the same time as they announce the All-Australian team, they don't also announce a "State of Origin" team for each State (plus Allies) and give the players named a jumper. They won't get to play a game in it, but they will have the satisfaction of knowing they were considered worthy enough. I expect the players who get named would be thrilled with the honour.

Wouldn't Viney come under the VIC banner? He was born and bred in Victoria until Todd brought them the SA.

Hibberd and Nev would be the only other two I'd think are around the mark. Hibberd has only been back briefly though, and both of them play for a team that constantly gets shoved to the side.

That WA team looks good. SA not so much.  

I'd love to see the big V again one day. Used to love it growing up. That one v SA in Adelaide where SA won by a kick was just glorious footy.

Team dynamics are a funny thing sometimes but the vic side is chock full of awesome talent and is clearly the best side on paper.  Also highlights we need a few others to step up for the remainder of the season if we want to go 7 and 5 or better to have a crack at finals.  Gawn would be there if not for injury

Must be NRL Origin time again...the time when the AFL get envious of the Sydney centric sport.

Origin is not for us.

Interstate footy has always been some kind of exhibition game and whilst we can talk the glory of times past the truth was a little more sobering.

It was hard to get the stars to commit, many a mysterious 1 week injury would occur around origin time.

Our game is built on winning the premiership as the ultimate glory and I can't see it changing.

So lets have a bit of fun with selecting teams that will never play, creating some interesting and not so interesting discussion.

...but I fear the AFL has a deeper agenda they're pushing through their media mouthpiece.

They can't bare to think of another competition having one over them...leave it alone Dill.

Likewise, Tom Mitchell would not qualify for WA, he was only there for a couple of years while he dad was an assistance coach at Freo.

I am not sure how Zach Tuohy qualifies for the Allies, has not lived in NT, QLD, NSW or TAS.

Don't know how Ablett and Gaff got in the VIC team, based on 2017 performance, there a numerous others I would have before them.

State of Origin is a fun concept... for children.  Its a bit like the boring waste of time that is the NBA all star weekend

Can't see anyone over the age of 15 having any interest in the game.   I wouldn't want any MFC player being involved in that pointless exercise in case of injury.

Origin is a great spectacle in league, obviously being the pinnacle of the sport.

But I agree, I am not remotely interested in anything that would resemble the NBA all star game. Complete waste of time.

Games that the players loved.

Ask the SA and WA fans if they thought it was just an exhibition game.

It was popular with fans and players.

The mysterious "injuries" occurred because the coaches hated it. "What has SOO got to do with my winning a flag?" they thought.

The coaches killed SOO and shame on them.

The AFL weighed in with laughable concepts such as the "Allies". Very tribal, AFL!

The Allies might have been a laughable concept but the bottom line is there is an odd number of states able to field a likely competitive side. Without playing a long series, you need some mechanism to make sure the strong teams play their game(s) against teams that are competitive. It'd (even more of a) waste of time if, say, WA played one of their games against Tas, NSW or Qld and beat them by 120 points.

Some games drew big crowds, went to the big one at the 'G'. Great exhibition of football with Dunstall, Lockett etc.

I don't think some players loved them at all, can't say all didn't and if you took a poll of course they would say they did. There was a distinct disinterest from some of the stars in the later years and this wan't just coming from the coaches and clubs.

Of course the crazies in SA loved it because their players could come home but interest had waxed & waned here.

When a club is paying players big $'s and as fans we have immeasurable emotional investment I don't want any of our players taking unnecessary risks on a game that really means nothing.

Call me selfish but I want to see us win a flag...SOO is not going to help our cause.

Two tiers. Vic/SA/WA play each other. Tas/NSW/Qld play each other.

Origin will never happen. It thrives in Sydney because the NRL is mostly an afterthought, and union and representative rugby reigns supreme. In the AFL, team rivalries and cultural boundaries are much more refined and defined, and the competitiveness is established in the battle for the flag. In Sydney and Qld, it's all about which is the better state. That doesn't exist here. We already have SoO in the form of "Victoria vs everyone else".

One thing that is often overlooked is that the State of Origin series for NRL has reduced interest in the regular NRL series. Crowds see State of Origin as the pinnacle of that sport and as such consider the regular NRL season as (relatively) inferior and therefore of lesser interest.

The same thing has happened to whatever the Sheffield Shield is called now. In cricket's case, it's because of over-saturation of test cricket on TV. The Sheffield Shield has been killed off as a spectator sport by the very people who should have nurtured it.
