Oscar clearly had a nightmare of a game and we all saw it. However, he is better than that and having now watched the game live, but also later on TV, there were a lot of little things he did well, which I didn't notice at the game..

Frost is probably not ready, but to be honest we need 3 big guys down back anyway, so he will get another game this week and hopefully plays well.

No he's not "better than that" He is Slow, Indecisive, Uncoordinated, and should not be playing at this level. He simply is not up to it and in my book never wil be!

Mark my words in a tight game he will cost us dearly. Any decent forward will have a day out on him. His brother is better but still has brain fades

OUT OMac- Smith

In any of Frost, Pedo, Tyson

I have to agree with this, I thought he was terrible watching live, but he looked better during the replay.  Possibly because I knew we we were going to win though.

Would love a fit Hibberd to take Smith's place, who looked good in the short time before injured.

Would also love a fit Frosty to take OMac's spot.

We really are being tested for depth in defence already.

Looks like Jack W can breath easily, we seem to have found a new "whipping Bot in Omac. Let the kid develop, he did not start real well , but he did a lot of 1% and improved as th game went on. Celebrate the win please.

Don't see him as uncoordinated, am concerned about his speed of thought.

Carlton has no forward line so we don't have to worry... Tyson in for Smith, not a like for like but Tyson can only improve the midfield depth and there is no alternative down back to replace Smith, those calling for Wagner are delusional, played 1 half of a practice match 5 weeks ago, no chance.

Out: Smith

In: Tyson

Vince will definitely get a week going by his history. He commits unnecessary acts like that too often, it's infuriating. Especially given the way he played on the weekend and how important his ball use is.

As much as I disliked Oscar's game, he won't be going anywhere such is the lack of KPB depth we have at our disposal and the fact the Frost is injured.

I'm sure I'll sound like a broken record by the end of the year if not already, but if our midfield doesn't fire during games like in the first quarter, we'll concede many easy goals due to the fact we have guys like O-Mac playing when they shouldnt be. There may be those who think St Kilda's pressure was what made it hard for him, but I completely disagree. Many of his mistakes were due to slow reaction time and poor decision making. His last JLT game and then this weekend's game he has been awful. Ineffective spoiling leaving his man free, getting caught with ball in hand, weak and slow around the contest and turning the ball over. He did all of it on Saturday and it makes us look so second rate.

Tom was better defensively but still made too many mis-kicks etc. They're both so hit and miss with that stuff. It's clearly our weak link. Teams would be salivating at the idea of getting Oscar in a one-out situation.

I also don't buy into the idea that Tyson needs to come back in for next week. He can bang the door down and get his opportunity that way. I prefer our midfield without him at this stage. Imo it's him and Oliver vying for that same inside mid spot. Neither of them play much up forward or back and Oliver's form is irresistible.

Outs: Smith and Vince (suspended)

Ins: Kent and Harmes

Given our back-line injury list, I'd send Salem back to take up Vince's role, put Kent in the forward-line which releases ANB for some more midfield minutes and Harmes as part of the rotation mix also.

B       Jetta          O-Mac         Melksham

HB     Hunt          T-Mac          Salem

C       Stretch       Jones          Lewis

HF    Petracca      Watts         Kent

F       Garlett        Hogan         Weideman

Foll   Gawn          Viney            Oliver

Int    Harmes      Brayshaw      Hannan      ANB

Did I miss something?  I saw Vince hit shoulder to shoulder, no raised arm, no high contact (on the wing, I think).  How is that MRP material?  Also, no report on the day.  Or am I thinking of the wrong incident?  The little 'love taps' on the ground after the tackling the man without the ball inside their 50??  I'm not sure even Attila the Hun would get MRP'ed, and I understand it, his record was a bit worse than Bernies!

I think Vince will be fine maybe cop a fine

Smith was showing a bit and it was a bit of a shame he copped the injury.

The Blues aren't super tall up forward so Hibberd or Wagner for Smith is the only change.

ANB stays in had a good game and needs to apply defensive pressure on Simpson across HB

Vince has a poor record so it might be one of those cases where even the most minor of charges results in him getting a week.

Personally I don't think there was sufficient contact to warrant a reportable offence but who knows.

I'm not entirely sure who replaces Smith (and Vince if need be) but I wouldn't be dropping anyone else and I'd only be replacing them with players who are 100% fit. As such, if Tyson needs a proper VFL game to get up to speed, so be it. Ditto Kent.

2 & 0 to start the season.

Bombay I didn't know we'd won already?

You're talking about a team that beat us second last round last year, then we get our pants pulled down against Geelong.

One win means nothing, until we prove to the AFL world a bit of consistency, no game is a certainty.

Carlton still have some gun players. Talk is cheap.

I'll echo the thoughts of others - Tyson is the logical replacement for Smith IF they deem him fit enough and ready to go.  Last year we made the mistake of playing Brayshaw against the Bombers before he was ready and we paid the price, so I doubt we'll make that mistake again.

Bugg and Harmes are the other two on the cusp, and they may see Bugg as someone who can play off half back, even if his disposal can be a little suspect.

This game is a big one .... not because who we play but we need to demonstrate professional consistency

In recent years every team thinks they have a good chance against us. The losses to Carlton and EFC last year were inexcusable.

Not sure how the players will deal with this mentally but hope in hell it is different to whatever they were doing in the past !!

Spot on: if we don't consolidate against a team at the beginning of a rebuild then our great round 1 win is wasted to a large degree....a good side would get the job done whether they are at their absolute best or not, so a good challenge.

I think there is a change in the mentality not only for supporters but the club as well, last year before the bombers game and Carlton game I was worried, we play Carlton this week am I worried, not in the slightest, I mentioned yesterday that usually I'm nervous before round 1 but for some reason I wasn't and felt very calm about how it would play out, it's a strange feeling but probably just a sign that the club is in good hands now so us supporters don't need to worry as much we can just enjoy the ride

The reality is that we cannot take any game easily. Any team can win on the day if it's opponent lacks intensity, run and spread for any part of the game. So we must show that we able to play consistently from one week to the next.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
