Sorry but if anyone was injured as a result of last night's game we won't know about it until one of the trackwatchers at training next Friday notices that somebody's absent, hobbling on one leg or has an arm in a sling. Then, a week after that we will discover that he's out for 4 to 6.

My take:

We were hard around the contest, when there was one.

The umpiring (Harmes gets smacked in the head for play on??) was Perth centric again

We broke down particularly transitioning through half forward.  having a tall roaming our here would have been awesome (instead of watching them crash into each other 20m out).  Small forward would have added something positive.

Some players had really off games.  It happens.

We were constantly caught out because of our errors and decision making failures.  Take the risk, but have the skill to deliver on it!

Our high push up style (to get men to contests) leaves the backline incredibly exposed.  We can give up a few this way, if we can get them back the other way (which we rarely did).  However, the backline looked inept at times - outmuscled, out-positioned, outworked.  If Kennedy kicked straight, it was over much earlier.

it is good basis for having a push at 2017, but there is a lot of tidying up to do before we will be a serious threat.

Yeah it reminded of our game there last year a bit although a bit more open. West Coast will be a good side, I really don't get the wrist slashing on here. It's the last hitout before the season, we lacked in execution but otherwise I thought we did well. The players who were down won't be down in round 1 and guys like Oliver Hunt Brayshaw and Salem did enough to get me excited for the year ahead.

This time last year West Coast were favourites for the flag.  They'll be good this year. 

This game will be great for the coach/players to review.  Despite most of our good players being underwhelming our gameplan held up.  It's rock solid and will be the foundation for many wins in 2017.

We're still an improving side, so it's unsurprising there were mistakes in a practice match.

Notwithstanding his 3 goals I don't like the two ruck policy and Gawn is the poorer for it.  It robs us of run and diminishes Gawn's role.  I wouldn't play Spencer round 1.

I wouldn't play Spencer and Weed in the same side at Etihad. One (or both) of them goes for run. I'd be tempted to give Spencer the nod over Weed.

Agreed Spencer diminishes Gawn's role but in round 1 I am not concerned. It is a long race.

That said i agree. I wouldn't play Spencer either, primarily because as you say it robs us of run, which will be critical against the saints. Dunn's lack of run (and inability to play zone) in the corresponding game last year killed us and effectively ended his career at the dees. 

For what it's worth i don't think he'll get picked. The JLT was important to keep him match ready and motivated because he is a critical piece of the puzzle if Gawn has to miss one or two matches (that's all i can countenance writing). They might go with the two ruck man is some games though, just not against the saints

We shouln't be wearing the  Bali singlet tops any of the time.  Our traditional jumper never clashed with West Coasts original royal blue jumper.  I don't see why we couldn't wear either the red backed one as we did against the dogs or our retro 80s royal blue one.  Either would have looked better that the crap we wore on Thursday - Sydney jumper from the back, bad Bail singlet from the front. 

Back to writing to the AFL in protest.

Bit disappointed we didn't push hard for a experienced tall defender like Eric Mckenzie who was on the trade table last year. Personally i think its a huge hole that we have left open.

I don't think Frost has ever been more important then what he will this year.

I don't think Frost is the answer 'dazzle' but do agree we should have looked for some extra experience in the tall defender department.

Also think we needed another ruck or forward/ruck option.

Just watched the game again. 

The mistakes and turnovers were incredible.  The amount of goals they kicked from our basic disposal errors was amazing.  They also had 3 shots at goal from deliberate out of bounds.  And 2 of those were rubbish decisions. 

Our kicking and decision making into our forward 50 was also the pits.  It makes you wonder why the game was relatively close.  

Obviously we did some things well, but I'd argue we almost couldn't play any worse.  

It's easy to pick one the usual suspects like ANB, Harmes and the McDonalds, but Lewis, Viney, Vince, Watts, Jones, and especially Tyson (understandably rusty) had some horific disposal errors where they couldn't spot up easy 20-30 metre targets. 

That said, most of that stuff is quite easily rectified.

He actually got hit in the jaw by one arm and over the neck by the other arm, of the tackling WCE player. That was just a stunning incident to miss by 3 umpires.

It seems even in practice games, the umpires give visiting sides a hard time against the Eagles.

Agree with Pro Dee's summary in the preceding post.

Very kind leaving Petracca off that list. Two absolute shockers going forward then a fumble in the defensive goal square in the 3rd quarter (I think) alone.

Yep agree with all of the above, partially the last line.  So in a sense, I actually think this was a better result for a practice game than winning by whatever margin.

...And yet we only lost by 20 odd points, so to sum up again, played like crap and we're still in the game against a good side.  Inversely, West Coast probably wouldn't have thought they would have played their best game either. 

What does also stand out though, is that it was close to a carbon copy to the home and away game we played them there last year.  We were in the game, had most of the possession and played the game in our forward half, yet butchered our entry into forward 50.  Clearly something needs to change if we play them at Subi during the home and away.

We have no one else, which is why he is continued to be played even though it's obvious he's not ready. 

I similarly wanted a ready made KP defender and still don't understand why we didn't get one. Frost and O-Mac are young, underdeveloped and have 'potential' only. 

And Tom is anything but consistent.

I think, on reflection, we had the best possible JLT3 match up given our Round 1 opponent.

They are, of course, called practice matches for a reason. We got to practice for Round 1 against West Coast in Perth. We sucked, but the result of the match is meaningless, It's all about what we learn from it and we've surely learnt a lot.
