Simon Goodwin era starts today

Generally agree, but wanted to mention there was a time when the Saints were GWS like, their top 12 players were all jets, coaches falling over themselves to take the Ferrari of a team out for a spin, and they made a GF, but didn't salute. There is nothing ordained about GWS getting a flag, it will go to the team that does the most work, not the most skilled. GWS will be fierce opposition, but not beyond us. (that said it will feel a bit like taking on George Foreman).

The Saints were a good side with a poor coach, they probably would have won a flag or two if the were better coached.

Goodwin is unknown but I believe he will be a good coach, he has a good relationship with the players and that's important, he has a bit of history as mentioned above but I'm sure that Roos and PJ would have asked him if there was anything that would surface that would embarrass the club.

I'm glad Goodwin has made his gambling issues public.

Like Schwartz, it does not make you a weaker person.Quite the opposite.

I am trying to control my own gambling currently and am going ok so far.The main driver also being that compulsive punting takes up so much of life's most precious commodity- TIME.

When I played cricket it was never an issue but my Saturdays soon became wasted on the punt.

Former sport players are probably the most vulnerable as they look to "win" in something at which they no longer can influence.

I urge any others out there to cap their punt in time and a fixed amount they can afford.

Or don't get into it at all.

I have a maximum bet $1. I don't gamble much, I have never had a problem and never will thanks to my self imposed $1 maximum.

Rounds 12 to 15 we have a string of 3 6 day breaks in a row facing Bulldogs West Coast there & Sydney. It will be interesting to see not how Goodwin goes but how the Supporters go. I just hope supporters  give him a fair go and the building expectation of finals next year doesn't derail what might be a really solid start to a new era.

I know we have had (and probably will continue to have) our differences, but this is a great post and despite the characters we sometimes play on 'Land I wish you all the best with this.

Just a little "tip" on gambling. I stopped betting on Four Legs in March this year when i found out conclusively about Cobalt and those bas####S and i haven't had "one" on them since, and every day i see the rags with vindication.

You only have to look at the way they carry on even when the horses were dying on the track.

Whilst I feel Roos was very much the Man we needed to reboot the club's culture and footy ( though Jackson  pushed the ON button )  I thought Roosy's game style was overly cautious in the main. You had to be to begin with but I feel ( imho ) the reigns were held a bit tight  for a bit too long. 

We got dacked in many games because we were slow to react. That might just be 'instructions' it may also be uncertainty from the group as to what Roos wanted at that point. Either way..we played staid footy at times, to our demise.

I noticed this was n't the case in the NAB but I had to temper my assessments knowing that in all likelihood this game style coiuldnt be sustained.  Ive mentioned before that I think the reigns may loosen now.  I think some new training regimes will go along those lines.. i.e  getting to the next levels of spread and attack. This is very much the way Goody played. He took it on when it was there to do so.

Havent got to a training session just yet  ( since they're back )  hope to in a week or so  to see what's new...in Demon Footy

My fears when it was decided that Goody was going to be the next coach was that they rushed into it as they were running out of time.  I do not believe he was their first choice but he was the best of the rest. I felt this was because of what most of us have read, Roos was pretty blase about the meeting with him, but afterwards was convinced he would be the successor.  Didn't instil me with confidence, still doesn't.  We hear the guys love him and he gets a long with everyone so well with such a great support group, all sounds too familiar to me. I even remember hearing a certain ex-collingwood coach being loved by the players.

The cynic in me will never let me enjoy our future success without a fight.

Beveridge probably wasnt the doggies first choice either. Carlton got Malthouse as their first choice and before that they got Pagan. So you need a bit of luck in these things ...not simply access to "first choice" . Dew was obviously his prime pick but I wonder now if he isnt at home wishing he taken the position now. Imo he blew that.  That ex collingwood dude was rejected by a couple of other clubs and we just fell into Mathouses egotistic desire for a legacy. Goodwin on the other hand would probably be coaching Adelaide now if we hadnt grabbed him. 

I agree that its hard to imagine dee success anymore.....but Im as hopeful as Ive been since 1988 coming into a season,

And we have beaten GWS the last Two times.. let's add another 8 to that and hopefully a GF in there!

I think that's being unfair. Lyon didn't (or hasn't yet) won a Premiership, but he's got pretty close. Really just one unlucky bounce away. Having said that, I'm not convinced Lyon is a coach who can re-build a team like it now appears he will have to with Fremantle. But I wouldn't describe him as a "poor coach".

It's going to be interesting to see how this season pans out.

I know most won't agree but I think Goodwin has made a few 1st year coach missteps to date, I will keep them to myself as I don't want to get into side issues.

It's not always easy coming in on the back of someone like Roos with the temptation to prove yourself.

I'm very comfortable with his football IQ and he has great wraps as a people person.

As a coach this doesn't always translate when you get the top job though.

I'm not as comfortable with some of his previous decision making and hope that he has truly learned and moved on from there.

I think what he does over the next month running into the first games will set the course for the future.

It's only then that the real pressure comes on, he may get a bit of a honeymoon period from the media but what about from us.

Does/will he need to hit the ground running? What's a pass mark for this season?

I think finals is the pass mark for this season.

Interested on others opinions.

Brendan McCartney thinks he has the best footy brain he's come across.  Says he's really respected by the players, but also "hard".

Our improvement in 2016 is down to Goodwin's new game-plan, which is still a work in progress.  Credit to Roos for allowing Goodwin to take the 2016 preseason and implement the changes he wanted to make.

I reckon we're in great hands with Goodwin, but he'll obviously learn as he goes and is not immune to error.

Outside pace could be a query, but Goodwin was comfortable with the midfield balance on his list.

"I see the game differently. I'm not a big believer of inside or outside players," he said. 

"I believe in players who can operate around their decision-making in the game … but if you asked me, 'have we got some speed?' We have.

"Jayden Hunt, Jay Kennedy-Harris, Dean Kent, Josh Wagner, James Harmes … we've got a lot of guys who have actually got speed, but it's not something I focus on."

 

He also talks up JKH.

Hunt and Kennedy-Harris were two players Goodwin nominated as potential big-improvers in 2017.

Hunt's potential is well known after being named the Demons' best young player in 2016, but Kennedy-Harris is coming off a year ruined by three hamstring injuries.

"We built him up slowly through the summer and he got his body into peak shape heading into Christmas," Goodwin said of Kennedy-Harris.

"His last seven or eight weeks have been outstanding and he'll get his opportunity through the JLT Series.

"He could easily be in our best team. He's got some attributes that he brings to our forward half that can potentially be really dangerous."

 

And comment's about Salem's midfield move

"He's a quality ball user … but there's also things in his game that he brings around the contest that really help us.

 

The inside/outside stuff is interesting. I think you need versatility these days but also pure outside run is super valuable. The hawks were ahead of the curve on both. Salem might be playing more inside to get a sweeper around the contest instead of having 3 guys who dive straight in for the ball. Lewis might play outside and not be as fast as most wingmen but he can sit off the pack and use his skills. The balance will be interesting.
