So, at the very least it seems that the Giants have a standing policy of players spending the night at the house of the 'welfare manager' when they are waiting to [censored] out their illicit drugs.

I'm guessing the whole case will be blown open by an investigation of the house which finds 30 beanbags in a large, softly-lit room, and a whole lot of pizza boxes.

Deleted texts can be recovered without too much difficulty.

seems the source of the original leak was the ex gf. there'll be a story there. either she whistle-blowed or was loose-lipped to someone else who did

Sounds like a miffed ex girlfriend getting her own back. Can't believe the stupidity and naivety of what people text.

I don't get it (I may just not be so bright) If the AFL has investigated for an entire year why has there been no decision? If he does play and it's found that he was avoiding a drug test, what does that mean in terms of results of finals? Am I missing something here?

You are missing absolutely nothing at all.   This is yet another AFL whitewash, an abdication of it (so called) drug free policy.  Could you imagine their embarrassment if one of the stars of one of their franchise clubs were banned, especially on the eve of their first ever finals appearance?

OMG I hope the Swans crush them into oblivion this weekend, never to be seen again (and I am not a great fan of the Swans' promotion by the AFL either)

Quote from the Article:

"When Whitfield spent those nights in the Lamberts' home, he did not follow drug policy protocols by informing the relevant authorities.  There is a suggestion he was advised not to do so.  The climate at the time was shrouded in some paranoia for players after Collingwood pair Josh Thomas and Lachlan Keeffe had tested positive to performance-enhancing substances as a result of illicit drug use".

Pretty ordinary when club officials give kids poor advice.  It seems no-one has learnt anything from all the different drug sagas of recent years.

As an aside Collingwood were supposed to announce Grubby Allen's new job today but all is quite at the Holden Centre

Me thinks this story has a bit to run still...

On the contrary.  AFL have learned to bury skeletons even deeper than usual.

Aside from the disgrace that this has been left to fester for so long is the timing of the leak  of this scandal to the public domain and questions to how it got out. A conspiracy theorist may link this to the Grubby/Balme power struggle that is currently going on at Collingwood. Highly plausible.

Gotta shake my head at the irresistible need for these young blokes to ingest drugs.

They are all educated about it before they play their first game.

Simple prikcs.

I have no doubt at all that it would be occurring at most, or even all clubs, and is covered up as routinely as this seemingly was.

She allegedly did it out of concern for his safety - may be true if they were still together at the time, probably why they're no longer together

I like the Wilson article. The AFL has sat on this for a year. They must have known about Allen's involvement and, in turn, what did Collingwood know?

Age article says the AFL advised Lions and Pies of the investigation when they were interviewing Allen and Lambert for the roles.

Why the hell does anybody give a [censored] if some kids take drugs?

It's just none of anybody else's business.

I just have never understood the public nature of player drug testing, notwithstanding the three strikes hooha.

When you see someones life ruined by it, you tend to take a harsh view.

Also, it's in the rules of the game. Do it, get caught, risk punishment/suspension. That's certainly why I would give a [censored]

I'm not talking about drugs in general, in society. Believe me, I see enough of the problems caused by that.

My point is, why do we as the public have a right to know about a footballer's interaction with drug testers? In any other employment situation, this is an in-house process with your employer. Why are footballers different? Tell you what, if I failed a drug test (which I am subject to in my work) and it ended up in the papers, I'd be spewing.

It's just not appropriate for the public to be involved in these issues as they related to AFL footballers.

What if a politician failed or refused a drug test, or a journalist, or a bus driver, or a school teacher?

AFL footballers rightly or wrongly are seen as role models. If you refuse a drug/alcohol test while driving you are deemed guilty. This has become public because nothing has happened in over a year since the whistle blower raised concerns. I think it appropriate that it is now in the public domain. I hope that it is not swept under the carpet by the AFL, sigh!

This is the irony though. If he'd just stayed home, even if he was tested, the results would have been confidential.

By trying to avoid the test (which didn't eventuate) he opened himself up to scrutiny.

On a more general note, how long do we think it'll be before the AFL starts with the vilification of the ex-girlfriend? 'She's got an axe to grind, she's not reliable, she's making it up, looking for revenge' etc. Nice way to distract the punters from the real issue eh?

I'm already imagining the radio call-backs:

'I know Lachie, he's a good guy, he wouldn't do this.'
'Lachie's a top bloke who stuck his dick in crazy'
'Where is the investigation into this ex-girlfriend is what I want to know! She's got a lot to answer for!'
'She just wants her 15 minutes of fame'

I'd almost put money on this happening within the next few days.

    THE CAVALRY ARRIVES by Megg

The injury plague which has beset the Demons 2024 campaign is finally starting to dissipate and with consecutive wins over GWS Giants and a 2-point nail-biter in Adelade, a sense of optimism is rising.  Some commentators are now asking whether the Dees can make finals? A huge surprise with team selection this week when it was announced that champs Olivia Purcell, Paxy Paxman and Eden Zanker would play.   Hallelujah!  The cavalry has arrived. St Kilda missed the finals last season on pe

    GOLDIE'S METTLE by Meggs

On a perfect night for football at the home of the Redlegs, Norwood Oval, it was the visiting underdogs Melbourne who led all night and hung on to prevail in a 2-point nail-biter. In the previous round St Kilda had made it a tough physical game to help restrict Adelaide from scoring and so Mick Stinear set a similar strategy for his team. To win it would require every player to do their bit on the field plus a little bit of luck.  Fifty game milestoner Sinead Goldrick epitomised

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.
