Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Hawthorn tried their usual ‘push Melbourne around’ thing. Sam Mitchell even punched Jack Watts while he was on the ground, which is like shooting Bambi.

Amazingly, Melbourne pushed back and then some.

It was a bit like when (spoiler alert) George McFly finally clocks Biff Tannen in Back to the Future. And yes, Hawthorn are totally the Biff of the AFL.

Ripping Win.
Was with my Dawks cousin, he had nothing but praise for us and just said at the start of the final QTR, Melbourne may not have the legs and the hawks have finished well this year.

Hated Ravioli's bump at the time and believed it should have been a free but now i have seen it a few times it was a fair one and a tough one at that.  Would have loved to see him bully one of our senior players, like Jones, instead of going after the kids, sniping little coward.

Reload and go after Port, Blues and the Cats guys, storm home and take that confidence into preseason.

Hawks are no 1 for last quarters this year. Makes our win more meritorious......

Did Clarry 'fumble' as the commentators say?  I thought he hand balled it off, was set for a receive back and not sure he even touched it on its way back when Rioli jumped off the ground and shirt-fronted him.  Clarry was going for the ball but he certainly didn't have it nor was he in control of it.  For the life of me I couldn't see how Rioli got a free kick.

Not sure what qtr that was but Jet was groggy at the half time siren; hunched down, holding his head and need to be helped up.  I thought he could have collided with Duryea when trying to spoil just before the siren.  Maybe it was that contact that knocked him about.

At least the game is being looked at closely by the MRP.

I loved how Rioli was booed every time he went near the ball.  Also, loved how our guys played hard and tough without being reported.  Hawks found out in more ways than one last Sat.

Dureyea definitely took Jetta too high.

The free kick to Rioli was for high contact against someone else (can't recall who), which happened a few seconds after the Oliver thing and had nothing to do with it.

I haven't seen the replay so I could well be wrong, but I thought at the time it was unfortunate, but probably correctly paid.

Haven't had any time to post my thoughts on the game, and still don't really. So i i'd thought i post some random thoughts:

Random thought 1:

I don't really hate any other side and truth be known i admire the Hawks as a club and team. However i hate losing to them and hate how smug their supporters are (some wally near me kept yelling patronising comments like 'keep up the effort dees and you're a chance of playing finals next year'). I also hate how until the last couple of years the Hawks have bullied us and smashed up our young players, particularly during the brief Neeld period.

If someone had asked me at the start of the year which game i would most like us to win this would have been it. A dry day in perfect conditions at the G with a chance to hurt the hawks chances of finishing top 2 which if they don't will likely mean playing their first final interstate against Sydney, GWS or Crows.

Yeah Hunt caught him high. It was a frustrating passage to watch live but watching the replay it all seemed correctly umpired.

Rioli got the free kick for a passage of play a few second later where he was tackled. He was tackled legally but because it was close he of course got the free for too high. The hit on Clarry and the free were two different incidents.

Having another look at the Mitchell incident, I don't think it deserves a week, pretty minor. Rioli will also have no case to answer. Sicily however, probably deserves a week for his crude spoiling of Bernies good looks.

And yet no free kick for any of the three incidents.

Sam Mitchells simpering looks at the umpire every time he gets a free kick against him give me the pip.

They are the most favored team by umpires going round and yet Gibson, Mitchell and Hodge constantly appeal to the umpires throughout a match. They won the free kick count (again) on Saturday yet they constantly appeal to the umpires that they "got it wrong". They are precious and pathetic.

Most players don't think the free against them was right but most just get back on the mark and get on with it. Gibson has been tunnelling for years now and getting away with it. He gets pinged for a 50/50 and he thinks theres no justice.

Those Hawthorn players should be fined and it made public that they shouldn't be seen to influence umpiring decisions.

A couple of times Rioli picked up players from the legs and drive them almost head first into the ground, reminded me of an illegal Rugby tackle. I think they actually paid a free against him for the first one then play on was called for the next. Surely these sorts of tackles constitute a dangerous tackle and would be worthy of being reported. Am I being too harsh?

Thought exactly the same thing. IMO the Oliver hit may have been all chest and Cyril will be fine but the second, almost spear tackle, should be looked at.

I read recently that the Hawthorn players are shown photographs of the game umpires pre-game and instructed to know their given names and to greet them by their given names pre-match. Yeah, it's a snivelling sort of thing but also indicative of their professionalism.

Rioli is in a class of his own, however, and I don't see why that should be so. Hopefully he is taken out sooner rather than later in the manner he did Oliver - legally - but more thoroughly so the little jerk does not get up.

If there was a country called Smug, they'd all be Hawthorn supporters.

I was [censored] when I saw quite a few of them sitting in the Melbourne Members area, but happy they were there at the end of the game.

Their top 5 players are all over 30 now and the smugness may disappear shortly, the Desolation of Smug is on the way.

One thing that has not been emphasised enough about this win was how important it was for Hawthorn to win given their bad percentage.  There is no way anyone could claim they were just coasting towards the finals.

I was always taught to introduce myself to the jury before competing (different sport) and to always be polite. Doing so will not get you off cheating but it may help in the 50/50 calls.

Not sure they were putting too much thought into percentage.

Yes, but their percentage is so much lower then the teams around them that they cannot afford to finish on equal points, they knew they had to win the game against us.

It's because Watts is now a gun, he takes the contest on, he isn't afraid to go in hard, and his skills and footy brain are elite.

Isn't it so bloody wonderful to see this guy blossom into a star?!

In years gone by Jack would have fallen into that tackle and lost his feet.

But now he stands up and gets the ball out

fantastic to see. He always had the talent. Now he wants to show it.

According to the AFL Rioli's bump on Oliver was one of the "best moments" of the round.

Pretty clear that he won't get cited.

Article on the AFL website about the MRP

Quote

Despite being found guilty by the MRP twice last season, Mitchell doesn't have a bad record, as his striking and kneeing offences only drew financial sanctions.

How is this possible? 2 sanctions yet doesn't have a "bad record".

Quote

The Hawks will also be sweating on Cyril Rioli's availability after the star forward laid a crunching bump on young Demon Clayton Oliver in the first quarter.

Rioli is a chance to be cleared after a fumble from Oliver left the two-time All Australian with no alternative but to hold his ground and brace for a collision.

Oh right, so it was Oliver's fault hey? And "hold his ground"? He overran the ball to deliver an old-fashioned shirtfront. He may not have got him high which will save him but the picture painted by this article is ludicrous.

Quote

If the MRP does charge Rioli with rough conduct and deem there was high contact, the worst-case scenario for the Hawk should see him fined, with a grading of careless conduct and low impact.

Give me a spell! He overran the ball and elected to bump. If he got him high then it should be an automatic suspension.

Disgusting the amount of bias from the AFL's own website, can't have the "stars" of the game suspended can we, all we care about is getting people through the gates and eyes on the TV.

No not at all. Cyril continually operates on the limits of what is acceptable. He is after all the master at tacking, a la Aaron Davey, except Aaron was fair.

A few years ago it was chicken winging players, that is Cyril grabbing players by one arm in a tackle but lifting their arms up and backward as they moved into a contest and causing maximum damage. We saw very similar behaviour yesterday. Attempted spear tackles on two occasions as well as the shirtfront on Oliver that was high but not paid, no doubt Cyril will get off but don't ask me why.

He also went after Weideman when his head was over the ball. Rioli went in headfirst which didn't make it look as bad but the intent was obvious.

Quotes from Melbourne/Hawks match

"They'll take the ball from one end of the ground to the other better than any other team in the competition"

"If you can't stop them, like we couldn't at stages, they can torch any side in the comp"

"We couldn't stop them moving the ball nearly as much as we'd like"

"When it came to the crunch we couldn't curb the influence of Gawn. His second half was as good as any ruckman that I have seen in a long, long time"

"When you move the ball that quickly they will get easy goals out the back which is good for your accuracy"

And my personal favourite; "They made us look silly at times"

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
