I have the same amount of nervousness about Goodwin as I would have with any new coach being appointed (including when Paul Roos was appointed). But given that my main concerns today are about what appears to me to be lacklustre coaching on gameday, I'm less concerned than I might otherwise have been. I think Roos has been outstanding at fixing the non-gameday issues, including (but not limited to) establishing a proper player development program, improving the playing list and fixing a number of severely damaged player psyches. I think the time is right for Roos to move on but I won't for one minute be anything less than extremely thankful for what he's done for the club over the last three years. We have a competitive team again.

I'm not sure posters appreciate how much Goody is doing this year, 

1. Roosy spoke to Goody about him taking the box and Roosy on the bench, goody declined. 

2. Goodwin takes 90% of trainings and meetings now, he is doing all the recruiting and list management stuff he's effectively the senior coach.

Roosy is really just the match day coach and a senior assistant at the minute

and that's why i am really comfy with where we're at with Goody

I heard several interviews where Roos said he and PJ had talked with Goodwin over the bye about the transition and 'he was ok about having to wait'.  Did I mishear or you have heard something else?

I would have thought Goodwin would jump at the opportunity to have a go!

I think it's just the wording, i spoke to Macca at training a while back and he said he wasn't sure exactly how it would look but Goodwin would be doing a lot of the senior coaching duties in the back end of the year, they definitely had a conversation about Goodwin controlling things from the box which Goody declined, no need to rush things.

Don't kid yourself 'Abe', Roos is the boss.

He might hand off a lot of the day to day duties to Goody but Roos still has the final say and the players know it.

We won't know how good or bad Goody is until he takes over.

The big difference with the Roos/Goodwin handover is that when a new coach comes in they bring with them their favoured assistants and support staff, this will not be the case with us. There will be stability instead of wholesale changes. I have confidence that it will be so smooth that we will barely notice...except for the fact that we will play finals in 17

This has been Hardwick's major problem. The Richmond players absolutely love him, and undoubtedly they are a tight bunch. But without the respect the pointed words don't mean as much, and if you love your mates you won't be as harsh on them when they need to be called out. Contrast that with Clarkson, Longmire, Beveridge, the Scotts - and the culture of those playing groups.

The Hawks players love Clarko and the Doggies love Beveridge - I think it's all a bit of hand-wringing and a massive beat up if you ask me.

Roos has gone out of his way to save him from having to deal with the media. Who needs that at any time? Sure its part of what happens once you are a coach but not while you are learning. That's the whole point of the exercise....

I can confirm after speaking to Jesse at a junior clinic that he is a left hander who kicks with his right foot. He was shooting hoops and his ball handling is outstanding on his left side and rarely missed a hoop. Observe as he runs in to kick that he leads with his left shoulder while his brain thinks I have to drop the ball with my non dominant hand on to my right foo, I believe he will get better as he matures. As a left footer myself who is right handed I get his problem as it caused me some problems in my playing days. My ball drop left handed was inconsistent but I learnt to kick right footed because my right hand could control the ball drop. I would like to see how Jesse kicks on his left foot.

Back onto Roos, I hope grateful members remember to email Paul and thank him for his contribution to Melbourne and all the processes he has put in place. He leaves the club in a much better position than when he started.

Just because the players love Goodwin at the moment, does not necessarily mean they don't respect him. Since he isn't the boss at the moment and doesn't make the final decisions etc., there would be a more friendly relationship. However, I'm sure next year when he needs to make those tough calls, Goodwin will make them. He'll earn the respect when he fills the position.

Goodwin is a seasoned leader with experience over 20 years at footy clubs as player, captain, assistant coach, senior assistant coach to ... I suspect he's got how to lead and coach sussed...

The fact he put himself through this apprenticeship with Roo's indicates to me he knows where he's at and will come to his coaching role as better prepared and more likely to succeed then any novice coach of recent times. Only Longmire has gone a similar path, the apprentice taking over from the willingly standing down head coach and it doesn't seem to have been a negative at the Swans. (I don't include Buckley's take over as Mick was never on board for it).

Given Roos will measure his success in part by Goodwin's first couple of years I've no doubt he's been well set up (list, facilities, assistant coaches, etc...) to succeed.

Absolutely agree. Just to get this team to mid table mediocrity is nothing short of miraculous. Whilst we would all prefer not to remember 2013, it does remind us how far we have come. This current Melbourne team would thrash that one. 

As has been said in other threads Roos is to Goodwin what Barassi was to Northey but hopefully we will go one better

Rest assured Roosy knows exactly what is required to develop an Assistant to a Head Coach. He knows the pitfalls and will have addressed them. If he says Goody is going to be a great coach I'm very confident he will be. 

We've already seen what he's done with the game plan. That wouldn't have happened under Roosy. He's the one that Jennings came in for. He's the only coach Jennings talks about. 

We're in good hands with an Assistant coach who's had as good a preparation as any has ever had.

I agree with most of what has been discussed here and summed up quite succinctly. I also felt less uneasy as time has gone by, Goodwin has tasted the ultimate success as a player and Captained a successful side. It will be quite exciting to see him put his brand of footy out on the park. Thank you all for summing it up so well for the rest of us. GO DEE's!!!

Agree....Carlton players love Bolton, what he has done with them this year is super impressive!
