Sounds like we're very keen on Hibberd and good judges rate him.  Good players will make us better but I still don't see his role as a recruiting priority.  We've got Melksham, Salem, Wagner, White and Hunt all capable at HB.  "Hibberd will free them to move to the midfield" yeah maybe but we've got N.Jones, Vince, Viney, Tyson, Brayshaw, Petracca, Oliver and Stretch there already - who are they pushing out?  Then there's VDB and Harmes.  I haven't even bothered to include Lumumba, Trengove, Grimes, M.Jones and Bugg but some are very useful depth at a minimum.

Hurley on the other hand ...

well of course hurley is the big fish who would make the biggest structural difference and fill a gaping hole. worth paying big dollars

If our young midfielders get better and become bigger problems for the opposition to counter, as most think they will ( eg Viney who is almost there, Tyson, Oliver, Brayshaw ant Petracca)  Jonesy will only get better and better as the job gets shared around more equally. At the moment he ( and Vince)  take on a great share of team performance responsibility each week.

Sorry to those who wasted time writing pretty reasonable posts on the Nathan Jones argument, but this clearly is not the right thread for that discussion, and all (ir)relevant posts have been deleted.

Sorry Nasher but this is where the post started thought it was fair to point out our weakness that's all.

narrative pffffftt

Some wanchor in frilly clothes pretending to the world that he is wonderful, until that "oh [censored]" moment, when the bull gets a chance to stick its horns into his guts.

Christians to the lions, or gladiator death matches have history too. Bullfighting should be consigned to history with them. An utterly pointless "sport"

Lets send Hurley and Hibberd to Africa during every off season, where they could stalk and shoot an endangered species like Lion, at great distances. That would prove their manhood, and build self esteem.

Yes and it was quite frankly a ridiculous diversion.  I said that:

"  We've got Melksham, Salem, Wagner, White and Hunt all capable at HB.  "Hibberd will free them to move to the midfield" yeah maybe but we've got N.Jones, Vince, .."

and you raised weaknesses in N.Jones game.

Salem and Hunt hopefully do have a future in our midfield but there's no way they'll be pushing N.Jones out of it to Casey.  He's not a perfect footballer but he'd be in the starting 18 at every club and in the starting centre square 4 at many.  And yes I'd prefer N.Jones to Prestia or O'Meara.

Dawes out at the end of 2016 saves us $500,000-550,000 a year.  We can swap that for offer for Hurley (or sure up Hogan's long term contract).

Dare say Hurley would command a higher figure, however it would go a long way towards it.

I am not sure on Garland, Grimes or Terlich's contracts, but there is some more money to add to it..

The players new CBA is set to be finalised at the end of this year, which will likely include a large increase to team salary caps (based off the recent TV rights increase). The current salary cap is approx $10.6m with a salary floor of $10.07m. Although the AFLPA's demands of a fixed percentage of AFL & club revenue is likely to be met, there will be a significant pay rise.

At the end of the day the money freed up by Dawes etc. moving on or being on reduced contracts will be a drop in the water compared to the CBA TPP increase.

Worst club to trade with -  this will be interesting if he decides on Dees -  just need to hold the line -  we paid overs for Jake, they can take a little under value for Hibbert.

Honestly Essendon won't settle for pick 27. Except a 2017 first rounder is not worth it. Maybe dodoro will try and incorporate a third party in order to satisfy his needs. Also Hurley will not leave essendon.

Er, can't he just claim to be a delisted free agent? Why offer Essendon anything? I was under the impression that the banned players could claim breach of contract and walk to the club of their choice. They are shlt to deal with, so no great loss if we burn that bridge.

Apologies if this has already been discussed in detail.

They need to be forced to settle for nothing.

The grievance process is there for a reason, and if these circumstances are not enough to trigger it, then the rule should be scrapped as the joke it is.

None of the 12 will do that. Bank it. They will not disrespect essendon like that even after what they have been through.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
