Angus Brayshaw's concussions

Really worried about his long term playing future. 3 concussions in such a short period of time does not bode well especially given 2 of those were in the opening contest. I really think he needs to be put in cotton wool for the remainder of the season with no contact work until pre season. 

There is an argument that it can take 9-12 months to recover (somewhat) from repeat concussions

hopefully what he got was just short of concussion and good sense was to take no further risks

I would give him 4 weeks off from now, just let him rest, if it happens again i'd be tempted to put his year on ice and get someone in to look at the way he attacks the ball and see if there is anything that can be done technically to stop it happening

The first one had nothing to do with his attack on the ball. He was attacked.  The second time, I didn't see him getting hit by the ball but again it seem unlikely it was anything to do with his attack on the ball. That leaves the third one. What happened there?  Does it anything to do with his attack the ball? And even if it did, it is just 1 instance so I doubt it is systematic.

A couple of seasons ago, the best player in the NHL at the time (Crosby) was esentially out for the whole season for recovery from a concussion.

Having a pro athlete out for that length of time to protect long-term health and career is not unheard of or unreasonable.

As other posters have said, hopefully for Angus's sake such measures aren't needed.

Whether he shows signs of concussion or not (with the current tests on hand that are still being developed), I hope club the is mindful and sidelines him for 6 weeks.

We must remember the concussion/ traumatic brain injury research is still in its infancy with a lot more characterisation to go.

His absence for 6 - 10 weeks won't hurt the side and regardless his long-term health is far more important.

Thankfully, it sounds like the club is being very sensible/conservative with its approach.  Sounds like the knock yesterday was on the mild side but he was kept out as a precaution.

 

Give him all the time he needs.

After reading tha latest Casey Report it appears as if Angus Brayshaw was concussed again on the weekend making it 3 Concussions this year!

In my opinion the MFC should rest him for 6-8 weeks if not for the rest of the year.

I recently watchd a movie called "Concussion" staring Will Smith which was based around a Pathologist who had formed an opinion that after a successsion of Concusions can result in permanent brain damage! This was based on real story!

My concern for Angus is only for his health, I know MFC will monitor closely and I think a number of things could/ should be looked at including the use of a helmet!

This young player is our lifeblood and I really hope we put him into cotton wool for a considerable period of time.

There seems to be a lot of players in helmets this year - Daniel, Murphy, Griffiths spring to mind, and someone from Sydney was wearing one too. Are these concussion related? I know the general consensus has been that they don't help, but I can't see any other reason for them starting to make an appearance.

Let's not panic too much yet, we're one of the most conservative teams in the league with injuries, especially concussion.

I wonder if Dr Peter Dohrmann, neurosurgeon and former board member, and I believe sometime poster on this forum is still involved.   

His opinion would be valued and appreciated.

IMVHO he needs to see a neurologist or neurosurgeon for a full assessment of his current situation, and be given the appropriate uncompromised amount of time away from the game.

His health is so important to his long term future and if he can return to the game much later and have the impact he had then it would be great for the Demons too.

I believe Murphy and Richards for Sydney are due to breaks/cuts.  Griffiths i think similar but i cant recall. Daniel always wears one.

Did you miss the post above that says Dr Larkins believes he should be rested for the remainder of the year? 

Additionally, we have no idea what his record was with concussions prior to joining an AFL team.  Players who attack the ball like Brayshaw does are likely to have suffered numerous concussions in junior competition... there is one such kid in my son's team (just under 14's) who has already suffered two or three concussions this year... to the point where he woke up with such a bad headache that he had to go to the hospital for an immediate check-up.

Not only did Blease retire due to issues but also there is the well publicised case of Daniel Bell who suffered brain damage.

I find it rather incredible that some supporters see the need to put these players out there regardless of potential major health issues, simply in order to improve our chances of winning a few games.  Some things are simply bigger than the game.

I personally believe that in collision sports in general we arent conservative enough on Head injuries. And in Aussie Rules Blindingly so!

Doc Larkins is a very well respected figure and In this area research just hasn't gone far enough. Sam Blease Daniel Bell and others are currently precariously placed with their futures every day!

Angus Brayshaw is as tough as they come but with 3 ( i might stand corrected here concussions in such a short space of time) I would be extremely reluctant to put him out on the park in the forseable future!

My son plays senior footy and if he were Brayshaw after 3 concusions IN A SEASON I would be imploring him to not play again this year, maybe never again at all!

Im sure the MFC will carefully monitor this and respond accordingly!

That display is sickening, I hope nothing like that ever happens to Brayshaw. If he has to sit out the rest of the year, so be it.

Short memory. Our very own Neville Jetta missed 4 weeks last season with a similar issue to Brayshaw.
