'Betty'..... thats funny. I like it

Probably need to explain it to anyone under 40 though

Hope the cat hasn't done a whoopsie in his beret!

Would be Richmonds number 1 ruckman this week if he was with them. He isn't Jacobs or higher but I think he is as good as say a Billy Longer or even a Jarod Witts when he plays number 1. Bullies, Richmond and to lesser extents Freo, Collingwood and Saints would all have him. Hawks and Swans would have thought about it at years end. Happy he isn't going anywhere.

Agree with all the positive comments about "Betty" . Good club man and great back up for who knows what might happen when we come up against the "pro Teams" Hawthorn, Swans etc. that will be looking to nullify Big Max. Have Betty in the VFL as insurance will be worth every cent of his contract.

Let's hope that Spencil gets rewarded with a Casey VFL Premiership (along with Terlich, JKH and other foot soldiers who we may not see again in the Ones)!

JKH is the new McCartney project   so you may not get your wish Interestingly Pencil has probably played more AFL games than you have

What have we lost?  A list spot, and perhaps a low-moderate contract.

what do we gain?  A back up #1 ruckman, insurance if the G-monster goes down. Pedo is not a #1 ruck, he is an average chop out at best.  No one else is ready.  It was/is our core list fragility (back men not far behind)

one year- allows other options to be developed/ brought in.

id say A good move, for all.

good luck to Spencil.  I hope he puts massive pressure on Gawn to retain his spot!

Agent: "Have you had any claims in the last 12 months?"

MFC: "Yes, one ding... I mean King, we weren't at fault"

Agent: "Ah ok, you'll be looking at an excess increase of $50k for the next 12 months"

I think in the second half of the year, if fit and firing he could come and do some ruck work with Maxy more up forward creating havoc. we need to give gawn as chop out.

Initially when the Spencil first turned up at Melbourne I thought him to be a very limited footballer. At best a good quality VFL player but not much more than that. What can't be underestimated is his commitment to improving. To me he is symbolic of quite a few players we have at Casey who despite not being best 22 keep pushing themselves to improve.  The buy in from these players is terrific and in turn pushes the seniors to hold their place. We are starting to create selection pressure on each and every line and that is good thing, something that we haven't had at Melbourne before. Another upside is that when these guys do crack the seniors they usually equip themselves well.

That would require a massive form slump by Gawn. Why would you wish for something like that?

This should keep those circling opposition clubs at bay.

Don't be so surprised, though. Been in the system a while and is a competent backup ruckman that does great ruck work. Just can't get around the ground or find the ball. He'd definitely get picked up.

When Gawn came of age down at Geelong last year, the big Spencil played well that day too

I wonder if we see them both in the team soon?  Gawn has shown this year he can go forward and hit the scoreboard. Im sure we will see the combo at some stage, even just as a trial

Honestly its good we have a back up ruckman in case anything happens to maxy and god help us othing happens but im not that excited about him re-signing. He isnt up to Maxy's level, but he is actually a good tackler and can clunk it. But I still have that image of him on the mcg a few years ago, the ball no where near him and he ran up the field and just fell over after tripping up on his feet.

Anyway we will see how he goes when he can get a game

Glad to see there's a bit of love for Spencer. I was beginning to think I was the only one. Smart re-signing.

Just a numbskull 'argument' that I continue to see posted in various guises on Demonland. Or is this Saty doing some trolling again?

I understand Spencer is a free agent, but so what if he walked?  He is an ordinary player who is replaceable. We should have waited until the end of the year rather than run the risk that he wouldn't get injured.

Please give me your list of replacements?

Just a comment on a poster who like others just denigrates a player for the sake of it.(Similar to a poster that calls another poster a numbskull, just because they don't like a post, don't read it) Spencer is on an AFL list. he has been given a one year contract, so the Footy Dept must think he is slightly more than a makeweight

I'm with you, read some of the posts, have a good laugh, and move on, unfortunately/fortunately there are all types on here, some posters just need to finally realise this and not read what they don't agree with, unless of course they can come up with a reasonable counter argument rather than just name calling....i wish.....my problem, I defend myself when attacked, misquoted, denigrated or lied about, also have the chutzpah to fess up when wrong, unlike some

I might contradict myself.

But at least I don't contradict myself.

My take on the extension.

One year. The FD clearly see him as important insurance as others have suggested. But clearly only that by the length of the contract.

He is 27 and has never really 'come-on' in any sort of capacity but I appreciate he is now a mature body who will compete if Gawn happens to go down.

The fact that it's one year also suggests we may be looking at bringing in someone who can compliment Gawn at years end.

And by that I mean a Jenkins type.

Just a guess.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
