I responded to a same-like Nutbean' response that I was referring to future games - if we're confident he's ready to play a full game with Casey then the AFL shouldn't be any different (in the context of potential injury only). I should have said just games instead of full games. Actually, I should have said nothing - as all broader points against are entirely valid except that they're the about as pointless as reasoning with a kid on Xmas eve.

The reason he is not playing AFL is nothing to do with potential injury - see Roos and Jones comments below. The worry is he will blow up before half time ! He has played one game against a substandard VFL team in 18 months - he  spent a lot of time not running due to his broken toe. He can star at VFL but the reality is he needs to get game miles into his legs and if he blows up at Casey it doesn't really matter (some reported he came on and off in the last quarter and was going at a jog).

Roos - But the reality is the jump up from VFL to AFL is fairly significant, so we'll continue to monitor him."

Melbourne skipper Nathan Jones said the 20-year-old was still "a couple of weeks away"

"I love his confidence and I love his enthusiasm but I think he's aware he has to continue to work on getting his body 100 per cent and get that conditioning in.

I fully comprehend this. My original comment was specifically in response to those suggesting we should hold back his debut due to the risk of injury.

My reading of the VFL report is that it's pretty clear he's some way off.

Christian Petracca: Christian was solid again. He’s come back from a long layoff and it was his second game back. He increased his game time. We’re just letting him feel his way, as the most important thing for him is to build his tank, game time and his conditioning. He’s been able to do that the past two weeks. He’s got some things to work on, but in regards to playing his role, his ball-winning efforts and his ability to get out of tight situations, particularly around the footy – his game was a highlight. He also finished off his work well and pushed forward to kick three goals, so he was one of our better players.

Wondering whether this is his defensive running.

First game back, underdone, no tank, things to work on, "one of our better players."

God help his opponents.

I think it's the old Olympic Park oval.

Did North have a problem playing Petrie, Waite and Brown?

Well, Brown was ineffectual. :P

Jones: Petracca won't play this week - we want to make sure he's prepared and has his fitness and body right.

Jones also said he was gonna "douse this one" and something to the effect of "he's not gonna play for a couple of weeks".

Mind you, one of my sources said even later (10-12) but I don't believe that.

I'd believe that. I thought it'd be Round 7 or 8. Round 10 sounds about right.

I use to make the trip their as a kid to buy fireworks. They were hidden in empty tin cans in the front of the window of an Asian grocer.

Philosophical problem with that statement: if tin cans were empty, how can there be fireworks in them? Does it mean that if there are fireworks in an empty tin can then no-one can see them?Or that no-one kept a record of their existence (despite them being perfectly legal)?  :)

Slightly off-topic but when St Kilda passed on Petracca in favour of McCartin  I am sure some Saints supporters questioned their recruiters. This would have been dispelled yesterday in the closing minutes of the Hawks game when McCartin took that spectacular pack mark in front of goal. By the end of this year I predict that the supporters of both Clubs will love their recruiters even more. A Win-Win for all!

Edit: compared with the Toumpas/Wines saga which is viewed in a different light.

This is about a 7% increase on last week. If they keep increasing by this amount he'll be thereabouts with typical midfielders in another two weeks.

Brayshaw looks fit enough now but Petracca looks 2-3 away judging by the Casey game. A lot of jogging not a lot of sprinting. I'm guessing gut running defensively is a bit beyond his fitness just yet.

Shame about Trengove's concussion. Will set him back 2-3 weeks. His fitness looked ahead of CP5's. It's very exciting to see that it looks like he's made a full recovery from his foot. He will be a valuable in. The way the games going, players with elite endurance over speed are becoming very valuable. Plus our list doesn't have enough players with elite skills. And he will bring that. Can't wait to see all of them out there. Looks like in about 4 weeks time we could have CP5, Brayshaw, Trengove. Plus I hate to say it but on the strength of the first 3 rounds you'd have to have Dawes ahead of Pedersen and Frost for CHF. That'll make a big difference structurally to at least Watts who seems to be playing as the 2nd forward instead of 3rd. Should also help JH.

Brayshaw had 20mins off with a concussion test so played reduced minutes...

Petracca reminds me of the cartoon of the nine moods of a golden retriever. There is sad, pleased, pensive, angry, unsure etc and in each of the nine drawings are of the same happy, chirpy looking dog.

Remember when Scully and Trengove were drafted and immediately came into the team and were our best mids, or at least in the best 4 mids.

Now Tracc can't even get a game.

Oh we have come a long way.

Yeah I remember when those names were written on the back of a beer coaster.

Tracc has improved game time under his belt now. He's ready.

I still thought Petracca missed a lot of targets by foot yesterday, he tries to kick most of his field passes flat, low and fast.
He would've gone at maybe 60% by foot, so still has to work on that.
Given the form of the senior team yesterday, and with Vince and Garlett to come back, I can't see him getting the call
up for the Tigers game as you rarely make 3 changes to a winning combination.

The only pos he'd potentially be ready for is a high-pressure, dangerous around goal and contested marking forward pocket role given his fitness level.

But who does he come in for?

We have to fit Vince and Garlett back in this week. Who comes out for those two let alone Petracca?

Unless of course there are some sore bodies, it'd be hard to drop anyone based on form yesterday.

Richmond have some injury worries with Hampson and Astbury set to miss and Maric is well underdone having only played 75 mins in the VFL as a Ruckman and forward. We need to exploit that. They won't be as tall as Collingwood so I'm not sure we need both of Frost and Pedo even though both were really solid yesterday.

I want him to play as much as anyone, just not sure it'll be this week.

Me too. I'm not saying he should be selected because it would be very stiff to dislodge anyone from the game v Collingwood, just stating I reckon he's ready.

Great problem to have, isn't it?

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
