I hope that those who aren't interested in watching the women's game can keep quiet about it, in much the same way that I don't enjoy golf as a spectator sport and yet strangely have never felt the need to broadcast that among its fans. Inevitably people will treat it as a novelty, but we should try to remember how much this means for women who love our game.

Also I think the footy community at large would benefit from entering this new competition with a mindset that recognises 'Doesn't look like men's Aussie Rules' does not equal 'Not as good as men's Aussie Rules'. The game style won't look the same initially or perhaps ever, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that- the skill, guts, teamwork and talent will all be there and the rest will evolve with time (and who knows in what direction?), just like it has since we wrote the rules. The fact that I'm already on the defensive about this probably says something...

Anyway, I can't wait to cheer on our team and I'm confident we'll be a powerhouse as much as we'll be pioneers!

How about the women build their own brand and followers before anyone whinges about the cash.

You need to generate cash in order to pay it out. I don't think you're going to have the men's comp agreeing to part with any of their share for the girls.

If the women's comp generates more cash, pay them more, but until that day, you get essentially what you deserve.

 

I expected us and Bullies to get a start, but I'm annoyed about carlton and colonwood. Watch them get the opening game, and all of the prime fixturing.

Will be interested to see how our current memberships will be affected by this.

Will entry to Women's games be included in a membership, or will it be a stand alone category?

Will we pay more for a membership to accommodate the addition of Women's games?

 

Not sure I would be too keen on paying extra for something I have no intention to use, but they will need to fund the comp somehow. Its for this reason I would like to see the games played as curtain raisers to Men's games where possible. Would minimize the costs involved, leaving more cash for the players.

Great chance to gain more followers and members. Lets hope it is embraced by all.

Would have been a disgrace beyond comprehension if we didn't get a license given how much work we have put into a woman's competition. I keep thinking back to Daisy's speech at the B&F, the last 4-5 must be an absolute blur for her. Going from relative obscurity with playing woman's football on a suburban ground in front of mostly family and friends to now being one of the inaugural captains of the NWL and basically being the face of the competition. 

I wont be in Australia to go to any games but I really do encourage all Demonlanders to get behind them and go to games. We've worked hard for this, I don't want to see the likes of Carlton and Collingwood cashing in on it!

I would also suggest the club make all woman's home games free as a part of our regular memberships, or at most a nominal additional fee.

I feel like the A-league when it first came in was treated as a novelty but it has built itself into a legitimate league. I see the NWL being in a similar vain. I think there'll be the people that go to "just support the game" which to be honest was all I did back when Melbourne Victory first started, there'll be families that go with daughters who are interested in footy and will hopefully give them role models, and then there will be those that go just to passionately support because they love footy and they love the Dees. 

One thing I'm confident on is it won't be a smooth ride, there'll be ups and downs over the next few years. I feel the AFL just needs to cool their jets on expanding, 8 is a good number for the next 3 years I feel. Let the talent grow, let the teens in the 15-18 age bracket see it develop and you might find a few starting to pick AFL and hone their abilities.

Poor analogy. There's always been a large grassroots support for soccer, but the old NSL had to be re-branded for the game to flourish. There is no grassroots support for watching Women's Football, just as there is no spectator support for the W-League (Women's A League).

The competition should be seen as nothing more than a vehicle to increase female participation in playing AFL. And that's great. Unlike the W-League, it's not a pathway to achieve higher success like the Women's World Cup or The Olympics.

If flogs like Andy Maher get on their highhorse about inequities in pay between the men and women,  it will do more damage to the National Womens League than help.

We are so far ahead of the game on this it will benefit the MFC. I don't know how but i have confidence PJ does.

They're only young Jacko. Don't overdo it just yet. They've just mastered " bash the magpie/ butcher bird". They'll get the chance     to go up against the magpie girls soon enough.
