DHD, I'm choosing to believe this post because it makes me feel really good how ever, other watchers have indicated that JT was only kicking on his right foot.

Can you name the coach who said this? I'm just wondering if it would be a standard line with a positive intent.

if it meant getting him back fit & firing,  I'd be happy for him to only use his R foot this year or onwards.  he was good with either foot as I recall?

Honestly, I don't know the guy's name. He was close to the boundary at one stage while the players were having a break. I said hi & he came over.. I asked specifically about Trenners & then about how I saw him taking snaps. Then asked the question about his left foot. But yeah, it might've been a standard "yeah, he's in a great head space" response. He was positive about him. Anyway.. something to look out closely for next week sessions I think !

Hoges still has his silly slow pause run up routine when shooting for goal (which he did a lot of today), but it's not as accentuated as last year.  He starts off normally, then has two silly steps about half way, before reverting back to a normal approach and follow through.

Noticed that myself watching at training on Monday, whilst it looks awkward he was still nailing all his set shots.

Kind of reminds me a bit of the stuttered run ups for penalty kicks in soccer,  which generally results in a miss or a save.

But don't mind it so long as he's staying accurate, hopefully he can kick a few more from further out this year too.

Judging by recent pictures and training reports, Vandenberg is in for a massive year.

He now has a season under his belt (which he exceeded expectations), comes into his second pre-season, and looks in tip top condition.

Vandenberg could become an elite footballer (A-Grade). I didn't see many flaws in his game last year, he does everything very well, and should only get better.

I'll temper expectations a bit. It's hard for mature age players in 2nd seasons because sometimes there isn't a lot of natural improvement left. His kicking and decision making need some work, he's very straight lined, which is a relief compared to so many of our past players but could be a weakness. I expect he'll have to get used to juggling time on the ball, wing and half forward as well.

I'm super excited for his tackling, ball winning, bumps, and bursting runs, but elite might be a step too far. I'm hoping he can take more marks this year as well, both out in space and inside 50.

Well said. I think Viney was similar, but once he slowed down, harnessed his aggression, he has been able to use it (aggression) more effectively, and as a result of slowing down, his decision making and kicking has improved. Additionally, I think Jack's tackling has been more effective, and by slowing down, he is able to repeat second efforts quicker. Vanders can do similar (his flaws aren't as bad as Viney's were). The beauty of Vandenberg is that he can push forward, he is a strong overhead mark, and is an accurate set shot.

I expect big things from him (obviously), but I have been known to get ahead of myself.

Great, thanks mate.

Really appreciate you and others taking the time to not only get down there but to also report on the team, individual players and other training nuances.

vandenBerg is on track to become the player we're all hoping Oliver will one day turn out to be.

Yeah, Oliver moves better (more mobile, evasive), but I think Vandenberg has better skills. They are both going to be very powerful players. It is good that we've been able to add these two - along with Brayshaw and Petracca - to our list over the past couple of years. I think we will all look back at the past two drafts as very strong drafts for MFC.

Geezus. I bet Carlton wish they could clone him. Would solve their midfield/forward woes. If he grows anymore, he could rotate as a ruck/ruck rover.

Adds weight to the idea that the AFL draft too young.

It does, but given the small talent pool they can't afford to hold off longer.  The best talent often have a couple of sports they could be playing and if only one of those is offering a contract after they finish high school then that's the one they'll go for.

* Vandenberg is still a beast although a much trimmer version.  Bad news for the opposition is that he has replaced body fat with muscle, so he is even stronger than before.  He simply ripped a pack apart in the match simulation.

Thanks all for the reports

great to hear that ball movement seems more precise and that more seem to run ahead into space

Salem's hammy a worry though - could be a very important player especially with Milkshake missing

I don't mind it if it's in control and routine, it helps open up the hips and kick through the ball. In pretty much any other kicking sport players run in on an arc around their dominant leg, it's really on Aussie Rules that I can think of (thinking soccer, rugby, NFL) where players run in straight.

Running on a slight arc is good, but I can't say I'm as enamoured with his run up as you and others.

His success percentage is very good, but at times he struggles to make the distance from 40 metres.  And I know he has the leg to kick longer.  So for me it's a technique issue that still needs to be addressed.

They had a go at changing his set shot routine last year, he didn't like it so went back to what he knows   besides which it works

Since when had Nate Jones had a shoulder reco in the offseason?

The reporter has probably used "Dem Bones" as a source. You know, the shoulder bones connected to the neck bone, etc.

I'm sure someone can find a clip of Dr Nick singing it.
